I am pretty new too, but, I have done my own work on 2 686's and here's what has worked out well for me:
1) Miculek's trigger job DVD for guidance.
2) Miculek spring kit (I only took it down to 8lbs and haven't had any light strikes)
3) Chamfer cutter and brass pilot from Brownell's http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/Pro...%26+BRASS+PILOT
3) Extra fine honing stone from my local hardware store
4) variable speed dremel and flitz polish for finishing.
If interested in the rest of it...
I tried a bunch of different grips and finally determined that the Hard Nylon Hogues, not the rubber, not wood, work best for me. I also switched out the original thumb piece aka cylinder release with the current S&W style angled one, replaced the front sight with an SDM fiber optic one, replaced the smooth trigger with an older factory grooved steel trigger and the rear sight blade with a taller factory white outlined one.
I used this gun in the TX state IDPA championship match last Saturday. Twelve stages, all 13 rounds or over (2 reloads per stage) and I never missed the chambers on a reload or had a light strike (CCI Primers). It ran 100%.
I am not a gunsmith, nor have I had any formal training, but I am handy with tools and mechanical things and not afraid to break it. I enjoy tinkering and will always do a job myself if possible.
With access to this forum and others, as well as Brownell's help line, all answers can be found.
Good luck!
