  1. Looks like a good use of antler to me. Gary J.
  2. Please do let me know if you can not get it to work. It did come out of a nearly new gun but as others have stated, they're not always drop in parts. If you are unable to get the results you want, I will come up with another hammer or send yours back to you if it comes to that. Please keep me updates. Gary J.
  3. Interesting discussion. I currently use a 4" 686 in SSR and a 4" 625 in ESR. I have a 4" 19 that I am considering using in a match or two, just to see if there's any advantage to the lighter gun. In dry fire, I can reload the 686 a whole lot faster than the 19, using the comp III loaders. One thing that I thought was perhaps the silver SS cylinder is easier to see than the dark blued cylinder and therefore easier to hit on the reload. Gary J.
  4. Uhhh... I have been working off of this 8lb jug of clays for about 2k rounds and it's worked fine. Upon looking closely, I DO HAVE little donut type flakes as you've shown in your picture. What should I do about this? If anything?. I've loaded 230gr lead and jacketed bullets with it in 45acp using 3.5-4.0grs. No pressure signs and it chrony's the same as always. Gary J.
  5. 170gr Hard Cast SWC + 8" barrel = plenty of meat in the freezer. Gary J
  6. Just sent email inquiring about 6 shot K frame loaders. I want to try these. Gary J
  7. I tried 45AR with HKS speedloaders once and it was not pretty. The cartridges are so short that a rushed reload = rounds on the ground. Gary J.
  8. Yeah, sorry about the focus. It took about 10 tries to get it that good. I have difficulty taking pics of small items with my camera. Why the target hammer, Tom? I like them on hunting guns because it makes it easier to cockthe gun one handed with gloves on. Gary J
  9. Wow! I was at that match but I was shooting CDP at the time. That's a great pic.
  10. I know I have the hammer, will have to dig for a trigger but I would definitely do a straight trade with you. Standby while I go dig. Gary J
  11. Very nice! Put that thing on a postal scale and tell us the true empty weight. Gary Jones
  12. Thanks folks. I do plan to be at Badlands in 08 but it's very difficult to get to matches in other states due to work schedule and budget. I've never been to Farmington but would like to shoot a match there someday. For 2008, I would like to make the LA state, TX state, Coastal Bend, Fiesta, Thunder, Badlands and W. TX. In reality, I'll be lucky to make any 3 of those. Gary Jones
  13. I've been shooting SSR for 14 months now and REALLY wanted to get bumped from SS to EX at a sanctioned match. Well, thanks to an unpredictable work schedule, I've only been able to shoot two sanctioned matches in 2007. I managed to win SSR SS in both but there weren't enough round gunners to get the bump. Imagine that. Since the classifications are only good for 12 months, I had no choice but to shoot a classifier. It was a weird one. Looking into the sun the whole time, squeezing the trigger as fast as I could and basically just wanting to get it over with. I dropped more points (50) than I ever have in a classifier or a regular match. It was downright ugly. But... The numbers were kind to me and after it was all added up, my total time inc points down was 110.xx. So now I am SSR EX. Looking back at area sanctioned match score sheets, I see that I am going to be pretty lonely in this classification. That doesn't make me happy at all. How am I supposed to have any fun if there's nobody to compete against? Now, all I can think of doing is making MA and chasing Curt Nichols. Few in my area take wheel gunning seriously. [/rant off] I would appreciate it if some of you more seasoned wheel gunners can share some insight into how you continue to enjoy competing in the upper SSR classifications when there are so few to shoot with/against. Thanks, Gary Jones
  14. How about an embroidered patch for my range bag? Gary
  15. I feel your pain. I shot SSR about 90% of the time between August 06 and June 07. When I holstered up the trusty ol' 1911 to shoot CDP, the front sight was MIA. The darn thing just wasn't where it was supposed to be when I went to brake the shot and I had to make constant corrections. Don't even talk about the trigger pull. To bystanders, it probably looked like I was trying to stab the targets with the muzzle. Anyway, a sudden change in platform can be ugly, but a few hours of alone time at the range BEFORE trying to shoot a match with a different gun can make a huge difference. Gary J
  16. I understand how you feel. Competing with a revolver is a lot of work and requires total dedication. While it's fun it is also rewarding. When it stops being fun then it's more like a chore. You're taking a break from it now, having fun again and doing well. The wheelgun will not hold a grudge against you for puting it down. Someday when you get the urge to pick it up again, you will have fun with it. For now, just shoot whatever you want and enjoy. Gary Jones
  17. I am pretty new too, but, I have done my own work on 2 686's and here's what has worked out well for me: 1) Miculek's trigger job DVD for guidance. 2) Miculek spring kit (I only took it down to 8lbs and haven't had any light strikes) 3) Chamfer cutter and brass pilot from Brownell's http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/Pro...%26+BRASS+PILOT 3) Extra fine honing stone from my local hardware store 4) variable speed dremel and flitz polish for finishing. If interested in the rest of it... I tried a bunch of different grips and finally determined that the Hard Nylon Hogues, not the rubber, not wood, work best for me. I also switched out the original thumb piece aka cylinder release with the current S&W style angled one, replaced the front sight with an SDM fiber optic one, replaced the smooth trigger with an older factory grooved steel trigger and the rear sight blade with a taller factory white outlined one. I used this gun in the TX state IDPA championship match last Saturday. Twelve stages, all 13 rounds or over (2 reloads per stage) and I never missed the chambers on a reload or had a light strike (CCI Primers). It ran 100%. I am not a gunsmith, nor have I had any formal training, but I am handy with tools and mechanical things and not afraid to break it. I enjoy tinkering and will always do a job myself if possible. With access to this forum and others, as well as Brownell's help line, all answers can be found. Good luck! Gary Jones
  18. Howdy, Long time lurker, signed up today. I've been shooting mostly SSR since Q406 and have been toying with the idea of doing this mod to my comp III's for some time but nobody I shoot with has done it, or has even seen it, so I hesitated. Today, I decided, what the heck, I'll give it a go on just one. Went slow, cut as straight as I could, filled the center hole with liquid steel and let it dry. Well, I just finished putting it back together and trying it with dummy rounds. It's like free time! Holy moly! Need to try it with live ammo and a shot timer but it FEELS a LOT faster. Just the little bit of motivation I was craving before the TX state IDPA championship this weekend. Thanks! Gary Jones
