Headed to Austin for a meeting...

Recommended Posts

I'll be in Austin, TX August 16-19 for meetings for work. Staying and meeting on the north side of the city in Jollyville (?) but I am renting a car.

I don't have a ton of free time, but I want to take advantage of being in a new place as much as I can. Keep in mind I'm traveling alone, so while I would love to visit that "great little restaurant in the sketchier part of town, but with food worth the trip", I probably don't need to venture there on this trip.

So, whatcha got? I'm a big foodie, so I definitely want tips on where to eat. Plus if there are some sites/areas that I just HAVE to visit, I wanna know.

Thanks in advance!

Susan

Jollyville is a community that was all but completely wiped out by urban sprawl. Only a couple of things remain with the name on it. Thats roughly where Jollyville Rd. and Pond Springs Rd. intersect US 183 (Research Blvd). Drive a few minutes south on 183/Research to the Capital of Texas Hwy. Turn left/east for this just a few blocks down the street. http://www.nxnwbrew.com/ It's a very nice Brew Pub and Restuarant. You'll have to go all the way to 6th Street downtown for anything that rivals it.

Rudy's BBQ (http://www.rudys.com) on 183 in that area is something not to miss. Perhaps not literally the best BBQ you can find, but its damn good, and its right in that area. NXNW is decent. Mighty Fine Burgers (http://www.mightyfineburgers.com/) is right down from you, too, and is good. There are a number of good sushi places - Kenobi in the Arboretum (http://www.kenobiaustin.com/) is good as is Musashino (http://www.musashinosushi.com/) - both places are a little bit on the pricey side, but are close to where you're staying.

A little further away, a couple of classic Austin places are Huts Hamburgers (http://www.hutsfrankandangies.com/) and The Hula Hut (http://www.hulahut.com/). The Oasis on Lake Travis (http://www.oasis-austin.com/) has awesome views, especially for sunset - the food is edible, but you don't go there for the food (the view is worth the drive out there, though).

If you want to slide out for a pricier meal, the best Italian in town (IMO) is at Siena (http://www.sienarestaurant.com/). Eddie V's Edgewater Grill (http://www.eddiev.com/) has awesome seafood and has a location up near the Arboretum, and their neighbor Z-Tejas (http://www.ztejas.com/z-tejas-arboretum.html), while not solely an Austin thing, is good stuff, too.

As far as sites to see go, the Capitol and the nearby Texas State History Museum are both cool. The bats should be flying - http://www.austincityguide.com/content/con...bats-austin.asp - that's kind of a cool site. They also fly from under IH-35 in Round Rock near McNeil, now.

That's all that's jumping out of my head, right now. I'll be out of town on 8/16-17, returning the night of the 17th, so I'll be around for two days while you're here, if you need some help, or something ;)

If you're looking for incredible food that's not neccessarily Austin-centric, check out the resteraunts in the Domain (on the east side of mopac between braker and duval) There's a place called Jasper's which serves prime steaks and claims to have the third best ribs in the country. I didn't believe it until I tried them, and they are PHENOMENAL.

Austin is known for Tex-Mex food and the two best places are right around Jollyville. Trudy's is fantastic and has awesome atmosphere. It's right at the intersection of 183 and Burnet road. Chuy's is also incredible and is Elvis themed - Duval and 183. Both places are live happening type places and you'd be able to strike up a friendly conversation with a stranger if you're bored and not worry about it. Also, make sure you go to those places before 6pm or else the lines get outrageous!

+1 to both Chuy's and Hut's (huts is also near whole foods corp headquarters/demo store)

I am occasionaly there on business and I don't miss those.

Also if there is an Amy's Ice Creams near you, you might try to hit that as well. (There's one in the airport so I usually catch one on the way out).

Casino El Camino

Green Mesquite

Maria's Taco XPress

Got these off of the Triple D page. When in doubt, say what you will about the guy (no pun intended), but Guy Fieri hits some great places.

Guy is cool. Neat gig he has with the FN.

Steve knows the area so well that they named it after him ;)
