I guess it's time for a hint:

The lovely lady who uttered the pearl of wisdom in post #1 was the mother of Merle Johnson for a short while. The recipient of these words was once a God-less preacher who eventually became the inspiration for a very grumpy Bear.

THX 1138 - but if this film helps us focus on goal-setting and process-oriented training/improvement, then I fear for all of us; most probably because have been considered "incurable".

take the Cannoli.

Still up for grabs.

Don't forget -- wild-assed guesses don't count unless you include the movie, the character, and year of release.

Tuff, huh?

**I'm sooooo glad to be creating these instead of chasing them.

OK How about Mr 880? Dorothy McQuire as Ann Winslow (1950). McQuire was Donahue's mother in A Summer Place. And it was first published in the New Yorker and later in a book True Tales...

She spoke to Burt Lancaster (Steve Buchanan) who was Elmer Gantry (the preacher) in the film of the same name. And Lancaster's son used him as inspiration when he wrote the screenplay for Bad News Bears

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

We have a winner!

The previous guess of Dorothy Malone was close, but incorrect. Dorothy McGuire, a true and rare beauty, is the correct character (Ann Winslow).

"The lovely lady who uttered the pearl of wisdom in post #1 was the mother of Merle Johnson for a short while. The recipient of these words was once a God-less preacher who eventually became the inspiration for a very grumpy Bear."

She played Troy Donahue's mother in "A Summer Place" as you stated. Merle Johnson is the real-life name of that well-known actor. He actually used his real name for the character he portrayed in "The Godfather, Part II" (Connie's/Talia Shire's smarmy, sleasy boyfriend in Nevada).

She spoke that great line to Burt Lancaster in "Mister 880", an actor who worked as a circus trapeze performer/acrobat until his late-20's, and who was a self-professed atheist. He also later played a preacher by the name of Elmer Gantry (thus...a God-less preacher).

His son, Bill Lancaster, wrote the screenplay for "The Bad News Bears", and was based on his experience being coached by his father. Bill had been disabled by polio as a child, and according to friend Joel Douglas - the son of Kirk Douglas - the 'Tatum O'Neal character in the film, the odd kid out, was Bill. The coach played by Walter Matthau was based on Burt, who was known for his grumpiness.

So, he was the original Grumpy Bear.

Thanks to all for playing.

Steve, please PM Brian your shipping information for your copy of PS,BF.
