Vhit 3N38

I searched on here and found some great load info but does anyone have any recent load data and info on using 3N38 for SuperComp? I'll be testing it in my fullsize SV with a 6 port comp and without popple holes. It is not a hybrid barrel either. I plan on loading out to 1.240 and I'll be using a 124 gr MG JHP and Starline brass. Thanks.

As part of my research I also jotted down 3N38 loads folks listed here.

10.3gr with a 125gr Zero out of a Pro Sx

10.0gr with a 125gr Zero (no gun data)

10.4gr with a 125gr Zero, shorty, 3 popple holes

10.2gr with a 121gr MG IFP (no gun data)

9.9gr with a 124gr MG (no gun data)

10.0gr with a 124gr MG JHP, 4 popple holes

Out of my Bedell shorty, no popple holes:

10.0gr with a 121gr MG IFP at 1.240" gave me an avg 1475fps, 178pf

10.0gr with a 115gr MG CMJ at 1.240" gave me an avg 1468fps for a 168.8pf

9.52gr with a 121gr MG IFP at 1.235" gave me an avg 1409fps for a 169.9pf

All were with Win SR primers.

I'm going to do some testing with 3N38 out of my Millenium Custom very soon....

Cool. Thanks Chris.

I just started working with this powder and used some base recommendations from Gman.

3x fired Armscor supercomp brass, win small rifle, VV3N38, 124 MG CMJ,1.245 COL

SVI full size, hybird with a total of 12 holes between the barrel and the comp.

9.9gr 1366fps 169.4pf

10. gr 1357fps 168.3pf This did not seem right to drop fps like this, I discussed this with Gman and he suggested new brass

Precision Delta 124gr FMJ, same as above but at

9.9gr 1373fps 170.3pf

this load also felt a tad bit softer than the MG 124 ?? I will investigate this some more.

Loaded 25 more of identical load of 10.0 gr with new Starline brass, PD 124fmj and will chrono again tomorrow.

Do you have to use small rifle primers or will small pistol work also?

I've used WSP with both 3N38 and N105 and 115gr bullets at around 170-171pf with no problems at all. Since these are both on the slow side they're not going to reach the pressures you'd get with faster powders like 7625, 3N37, N350 etc. Heck, with N105 you could probably fill the case all the way, smash a bullet on top of it and still not get dangerous pressures...at 10.5gr it's a slightly compressed load already and the primer marks are picture perfect. Well I am going to start loading .38SC loads for Susan. One gun is a Trubor and the other is a MC with I think 2 popple holes.

I have:

WSP Primers

4lbs 3N38

125 MG JHP

Once fired Starline .38SC brass

You'll probably end up somewhere around 9.5gr to make major with a cushion. I think I ended up at 9.5 using a MG 121, but my gun doesn't have any popple holes. 9.0 might be a good starting point...no sense in starting really low with such a slow powder. R,

I was going to use measure some of the Atl Arms to come up with a seating depth.

If I recall correctly, the AA 38SC major was at 1.235". That's a really good target OAL as it seems to work in most guns and is just short enough to be able to eject freely without hitting the front of the ejection port etc.

124 MG JHP, oal 1.225, WSR primer, 9.0 to 9.2 of VV 3N38.

in my 38 super comp STI 2 hybrid holes and STI comp. makes major.

tweek/tune it to your shooting style

If you like a snappier load 3N37

an OAL of 1.235" is the sweet spot in ALL of my open guns running 38SC in SV mags as well.

i run 9.3gr behind a 124MG JHP, 1.240 OAL, 171-173PF... it has worked great for me!

I loaded up a few with this load at 1.235" and WSP primers. Was kinda late when I got to the range so the chrono wouldn't read well. Boy the flames that thing would throw! :surprise: I might have to go to another powder, I don't think Susan is going to like the flames unless they disappear in broad daylight!

When I loaded 38 super comp I used VV3N38 powder. The load was 9-9,1 gr. I did't notice any flame problem during day time but I did notice it when I was using N350 which was my second choice. For me VV 3N38 was the best choice for my open gun. :D

As the shooter you won't see the flames during the day.
