Selling Guns Out Of State

Make a LONG story short.....

Sell a gun to a fellow BE'er.

Takes damn near forever to find an FFL dealer willing to perform the transaction....

Takes a bit longer to talk them into shipping the gun for me....

Gun FINALLY gets shipped via UPS after waiting 3 weeks because "we only make one large shipment a month."

Poor guy e-mails me and asks, "where is my gun?"

I follow up only to discover that the gun NEVER gets to its final destination, the FFL dealer KNOWS this and they decide to let UPS drag their feet while they "trace" the package with the utmost urgency. <_<

The gun is gone....the money has been refunded....and some scumbag is committing crimes with the gun BUT UPS is "hot on the trace" of the missing gun. <_<

Bruce (the purchaser)...I am truly sorry. :(

I will say this about Chuck, he is one of the good guys. Fine man to deal with.

By now, the box it was shipped in probably looks like it has been run through a wood chippier---and it is laying on some little old lady's porch in India, having been shipped to Indiana---and she is wondering where the heck the shoes she ordered went.

Bad situation, sorry about it Chuck.

UPS got back to me today...

no insurance money will be paid out until their "exhaustive search" has been completed.

We're talking MONTHS here.....

Still no sign of the gun. Last know location of the traced package, Louisville Kentucky NDA package sorting center... <_<

The saga continues....

I should sticky this as a cautionary tale for the frequent threads on various forums where some genius is advising people to lie to UPS or FedEx about shipping a gun so they can save $20 and not have to ship it second day air...... because if it gets lost, NO REFUND.

I always list guns as "machine parts" because telling them it's a gun is how the doggone things get stolen to begin with.

So what happens if the "machine parts" get stolen or do you insure the "machine parts" for a couple $K? Does UPS/FED-EX have any policy that you misdeclare the package, you can't get re-inbursed for the amount declared?

Got the call today...

The gun has been recovered. :o

UPS won't tell me where they found it but it's on its way back home. <_<

I asked them to ship Fed-Ex. ;)

They obviously were NOT amused... :P

That's the humorous ending we were looking for. :D

Seriously... So glad you retrieved the gun. That must've been really, ugly stressful.:wacko:

Yes, it came back this morning. Just got back from picking it up.

Gun is in the same shape it was in when it left NY....brand new w/o a scratch.

No...I think I'll keep this one. This model 10 and I have a special "bond" since it was kidnapped and subsequently returned by its inept kidnappers.

It MAY become my new Bianchi Cup revolver.....

People doing this might want to read Title 18, Section 922(e) of the United States Code:

It shall be unlawful for any person knowingly to deliver or cause to be delivered to any common or contract carrier for transportation or shipment in interstate or foreign commerce, to persons other than licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers, or licensed collectors, any package or other container in which there is any firearm or ammunition without written notice to the carrier that such firearm or ammunition is being transported or shipped; except that any passenger who owns or legally possesses a firearm or ammunition being transported aboard any common or contract carrier for movement with the passenger in interstate or foreign commerce may deliver said firearm or ammunition into the custody of the pilot, captain, conductor or operator of such common or contract carrier for the duration of the trip without violating any of the provisions of this chapter. No common or contract carrier shall require or cause any label, tag, or other written notice to be placed on the outside of any package, luggage, or other container that such package, luggage, or other container contains a firearm.

Not legal advice.
