Florida Open 2006 - Match Discussion

Recommended Posts

Thanks Dave / XRE. I didn't mean to sound like I didn't have fun, I did. I just ran through all the negatives in my first post. It was a blast and a great squad. Weather was great, stages were good without being tricky, competition was TOUGH. IMO this match lands between the Nats and the Areas for difficulty; almost everyone is there, and it's tough and long.

This is the second time I have shot with BE'ers and they've been the most fun I've had at big matches. You guys just enjoy shooting. Thanks to all. BTW - Andrea had a blast!!! Which works out well so I can actually shoot some matches this year. I had a little explaining to do when I introduced myself to Travis and he didn't recognize meat first, but as soon as I started talking about Bolivia and coming home... he knew Andrea right away. So did several others. And she picked right up on it. B)

Back to the match; I'm normally a smooth points guy instead a speedy hoser, even at local matches, I don't usually have the fastest time. If I win it's through points and consistency. Objectively it just wasn't "that guy" that shot this match.

But it's a starting point, and my "wake up call". I am learning about prep and mental training. Like I said, I am happy with the movement, espeically coming into positions; I am shooting earlier than I ever have, without even thinking about it. Hits on the "entry" targets were good all week, often small steel, so I am happy that the work is paying off. Like all taped "highlites" it looks good to me now, but I am sure within a few months I'll see something that needs tweaking.

The mental side could be seen as a let down, but with all those little naggin factors, I guess I did alright, so maybe it's the mental side that kept me from exploding down to 50th place. I guess if Dave forces me to accept the glass as half full instead of empty (or my normal "did you spit in this?" <_< ) I can see some progress.

No I don't expect perfection, but I am am pursuing it.

RPD / Venry - you got enough comp on that thing? :P That is one cool gun, like an open gun.....only longer.

Pics and video to follow after lunch.

I am told that the match results will soon be up on the USPSA website.

Soon thereafter the results will be available here. I will either post the results here, or post a link to them on my website.

DP,

I agree with you that the eating stage looked the same, using either method, but the folks that moved forward first had faster times on my squad. I cannot explain the advantage but there seems to have been one. I wanted to shoot it your way, but shot it the other way.

Thanks Boo, it was fun. You guys kept me level and smiling in spite of my dismal performance.

I actually cancelled out of the match Friday, cancelled my hotel room and then when things "worked out", I ended up loading ammo Fri night and leaving my house at 0430 Saturday morning. <_<

BlkBrd is telling me I ended up 11th, which only means everyone elses gun broke. I had a rough match, gun locking open on new mags first four stages, trying to make that up with speed (Note: to be read slow Mikes). Then I switched to the "old reliable" international stndard mags I have shot for the last year and a half. Then gun ran great, but now I was out of count and kept running it dry.

Saturday we drove to mom's after the match, and back at, you guessed it 0430 Sunday morning. <_<

Once in a while it would seem like things were going to gel, and I would trigger freeze or miss a position, so I never had what I would call a solid run. I felt in most cases I picked good plans, but didn't execute well. :(

Gambling was a clear case of letting your subconscious idle and "correct things" that should be left alone.

I'm still not convinced I shot "Eating" wrong. I shot it in 19.69 with a LOOONNG 2+ seconds of trigger freeze on the swingers. It really felt solid except for the end on the swingers. Fastest run was TJ at 15.99. So If I don't trigger freeze I really think I'm within a second of the pace. And TJ did smoke the thing. I mention all this because the Supers all ran around the front, and I ran across and then up.

I got TJ, Smitty, Graffel, Seeklander and lowly me on tape. Oddly I am the only guy that didn't run around the front, so maybe that should tell me something. Anyway, I'll run it both ways this coming weekend for fun and see what I come up with. I bet it's close. And yes, I wanna know. I'm not into doing something "just because" and if it's faster, I wanna know for next time.

All in all, it was what I told myself it would be; a wake up call to get my ass out there and get back up to speed. We're shooting it again as a local match next weekend. I'll be there.

The one bright spot was that in the videos my movement does seem to be improving. Not there yet, but better. "poco a poco" as they say. I'll try to figure out how to post some, even as a blooper reel.

It's funny how reading this over, I get the blinding flash of the obvious that maybe, just maybe I didn't "set myself up for success".

Well, fun had, money spent, lesson learned. <_<

Yes , it was interesting to see the "slight " differences when the supers ran a stage. I guess it was their willingness to stretch the envelope in all directions while many instead chose to run them safe. I was watching when the Supers were runiing that stage, and noticed how they " all ran it across from left to right with a final sprint running sideways/back and putting the brakes down hard as they swiveled to take the final shots in the "hidden" right long shots. I thought of running it that way (not that I can run worth sh*t fast enough) and asked the RO about it. I was told (with a stern look) I would "certainly" break the 180 running back that way and be DQ'ed. So I didn't pursue it... or did not want to "stretch the envelope". While some of the Supers were running it, I asked Eric Grauffel who was at the time sitting down near me about it. He looked at me quizzically and said: "you can run it any way yo want to... ???" I told him I had not seen his run, and asked if he had run it that way... Again, he gave me that Grauffel expressionless matter of fact face, and then smiled with a question mark... "of course, yes"... he said. Since I need to save fluid motion steps, I guess I will be willing to "stretch the envelope" more the next time. Thanks, Msieur. Grauffel. Next time I will take your class. (and pay for it too, it will be worth it.)

You can't be DQ'ed unless you actually do break the 180... so... Maybe he was thinking that, if you had to ask... :) Just be safe with whatever you choose to do, and nothing can be said about it :)

As far as running backwards goes, you see it all the time in IPSC courses - it's not so prevalent here in the US, so we tend to be slightly hinky about it (though it was apparently quite common back in the "dark ages" of IPSC). It presents certain difficulties for the RO, and also ends up being a potential 180 trap for shooters not accustomed to doing it - but isn't an issue, otherwise...

I just got an e-mail and a confirmation post in my local Club, www.sfpc.org about the "mirror" local match this coming week-end... and the wheels/cogs in my brain are turning, which is a dangerous thing... Could it be that I too am looking for revenge/redemption???? If I can re-arrange my week-end schedule I'd love to be there. Who knows? Wouldn't it have been nice if we could have had this as a "secret warm-up match" last week-end instead of as a Monday morning "quarterback" session. (One can always dream, right?) It should be nice without the "maddening crowds" and big match pressures. (This time I will bring a "knee brace" with me and maybe some cortizone shots to my joints!) :D:o:wacko:

The match was pretty good. The staff was great as always. Stages were pretty typical for the FL Open, turtle targets wide open at deceiving distances. They looked just close enough to make you think you could shoot fast. And steel at distances you knew you couldn't shoot fast but tried anyway.

I dropped 40some points on one stage because I'm retarded and 20some on another due to a weird jam. I guess I'll have to actually pay attention when I'm drop checking. So that took me out of the match. Otherwise I shot decent, just a little slow. It wouldn't have mattered anyway, Todd was on fire and couldn't have been touched. It was actually kinda fun to watch, even though I knew I was getting my ass kicked. There was one stage that was 28 rounds from basically one position with 25 yd papers and 20 yd steel; Todd shot it in 15 flat down 7. For comparison Eric in open division who didn't have to load shot it in 14.4 down 4. That's pretty much how Todd shot the whole match.

On the up side I shot my first penalty free / hammer follow free match, so I was pretty happy about that.

And no matter how the match goes, it's still an IPSC match with 80 degree weather in Feb.

Gotta love that!!!

See ya'll at the next one.

P.S. Thanks Eric. Now go get some mags that work!

This was the most physical match that I have ever shot. The shot difficulty level was as expected and the props and designs were all first rate.

The physical element is what had all of us "older folks" reaching for the Advil bottles and knee braces. Lots of sprinting between fairly distant shooting positions and awkward shooting positions to work around the unusual props. The extra running really gave the young folks a greater advantage that they usually enjoy.

Overall it was a great match, but my legs have not forgiven me yet.

I heard from the RO on Stage 2 Skydiving that five shooters had dropped their guns from their holsters while navigating the "landing zone." He said all had some type of speed holster. That was around 9:00 on Sunday so there were likely a few more. I guess my $20 Uncle Mike's Kydex paddle holster has some advantages after all. :P

Anyone know who won the Harley?

I wasn't able to stay for the prize table. Was it good, bad or so-so?

we had a guy drop out of an 012 during walkthrough.

I didn't think the start was really required for a challenge. It was an intersting plank walk kind of stage. But the start, requiring you to run while holding handles above your head, was more of a holster test than shooting challenge. I thought we dropped those.

Lovin' that DOH B)

DOH!!! :huh:I deserved that.

Congrats on the new "ride". I said it before, gun problems were all that was keeping you from really chewing on those guys. Onwards and upwards. Get-r-done!!! B)
