timawa
I need help on deciding whether pistol or 16” for my first pistol caliber rifle. Has anyone used pistol profile (short barrel) in pistol caliber for competition? Is 16 inch the norm? Advantages or disadvantages of short barrel? Legal issues with shouldering pistol? MemphisMechanic
AR pistols aren’t permitted in USPSA, so that could be a factor for you. Link to comment
Dr Mitch
To avoid legal issues, get the barrel sleeved. Pin/weld an aluminum sleeve over it. Taccom makes them also. Link to comment
Flatland Shooter
The 16" PCC barrel is pretty much the norm but that's due to the $200 stamp tax the Fed assess for the privilege to own and shoot a SBR (short barrel rifle). Do away with the fee and paperwork and I think we would see many more competitors using SBR's in USPSA PCC. I would be one of them. Link to comment

Taccom makes a 5.25 inch barrel that is pinned and welded with an aluminum shroud. It's very light and works well. Link to comment
MikieM
Any barrel length is allowed as long as the gun is in compliance with all applicable State, and Federal laws. The gun must have a stock that is capable of being fired from the shoulder. Link to comment
timawa
I thought you can shoulder an arm/pistol brace now? Link to comment
L9X25
If it is a pistol, it's not a PCC, and you are going to have to holster that bad boy. Link to comment

One vendor has a letter from the BATF indicating the stock touching the shoulder (accidentally?) does not make the pistol an SBR. From what I've read, the ruling might only apply to that vendor's arm brace. Either way, the USPSA rules require a PCC to have a stock that can (legally) be shot from the shoulder. See Appendix D8, Rule #6. Pistol Caliber Carbine Division - Appendix D8 Must have stock attached and be capable of being fired from shoulder position. **Note: Sig Brace and any variant thereof is not allowed** Handgun conversions are allowed, provided they meet the criteria above. MikieM
It is my understanding that you are in violation of Federal law when you shoulder a pistol stock so I suppose you could accidentally do twenty to life at Leavenworth. Link to comment
timawa
That’s a lot of information there, that is good to know. Thanks for the heads up. Well 16” is a go. Link to comment
Aircooled6racer
Hello: Get a full length 16" barrel and don't rethink it. Tune some reloads for it and also tune a buffer setup as well if it is a AR9. For a Sig MPX just get a 115-124 grain bullet load and shoot it. Thanks, Eric Link to comment
