More Prima V batch 16055 data

Some more 16055 data…

I've been reading up on Prima V and how lot 16055 is a bit slower than previous batches.
I don't have any experience with any other batch numbers; 16055 is the only one I have.

 

Tested two loads: 3.1 grains, 3.2 grains

3.1 was just short of minor power factor.
3.2 made minor but too close for comfort (for me anyway...)

I'll try to get some data with 3.3 but it won't be for a week or probably two.

 

I was not able to get any accuracy numbers; chrono data only.

M&P 5” Core with an Apex semi-drop-in barrel.

I've heard that also but I'll have to wait to comment until I shoot an entire session with just Prima V.

In this particular session I followed up the chrono session with about 200 rounds from a different load.

Finally got around to chrono 3.3 Prima V with Blue Bullets 147 RN.

Same gun,press,etc. as before.

Didn't have GPS turned on so no temp/pressure but it was in the low 70's.

No serious accuracy testing but casual 10 shots to the head from about 10 yards did not indicate any obvious issues.

 

Not sure why chrono only recorded 6 shots as I recall shooting 10 but...

 

Really liked the spread and SD numbers.

 

I see that as I've gone from 3.1 to 3.2 to 3.3 those numbers have declined with each increment.

I shot a few groups yesterday with the same batch of prima v with 147 acme  flat points out of a G-34. I shot these groups at fifteen yards with chrono at about eight feet.

Cci-500. Win brass

prima v. 3.2 grs

147 fp. 1.135 oal

899.6  fps.  Es 14. sd 4  8 shots

1.6" group

 

same except 3.4grs prima v

935 fps. Es 17. sd 5. 8 shots

1.74" group

I loaded some more at 3.2 grs with 1.15 oal and some at 3.1 grs with a1.135 oal and 1.15 oal hopefully I'll get to try them out next week.

I am using an older batch, but can confirm very tight velocity spreads, especially on the upper end. Did a ladder this week and my last two loads with about 20 rounds probably half were in 5fps of each other, and most all of them in a 10fps window.

 

For the first couple I actually through my chrono wasn't working. The number wasn't changing....

Yes, very happy with the spread.

The question was asked earlier about "does it burn clean?".

Today was my first extended experience with the load, used it in a match, around 180 rounds.

I do believe it is cleaner than the other loads that I have used for 9mm minor (which I should note have all been with slower powders, WSF, Silhouette, True Blue, none of which is considered ideal for that application)

Good to see an update from regular use. I'll spend the extra for N320 if that's the case

Only used Unique and Bullseye before, and as you can guess far cleaner than those, and burns much cooler as well. If you need something cleaner and are willing to spend double to get it go for it, but I would never call Prima V dirty.

I'm switching from VV N320 to Prima V. My groups are better and it's not what I consider a dirty powder like Tightgroup or Unique. Is it as clean as N320, almost. The better accuracy and feels as soft as N320 is plenty of reasons for me to phase out VV powder.

I will agree that it probably has the best SD at times from my chrono data but over 100 rounds, it varies .10 gr. Right now I end up mixing the powder and adjusting if necessary to stay within a +/- .05 gr range.

 

I notice that if I don't kind of stir the powder around after 100, the larger pieces gravitate to the top and the smaller ones make it to the bottom. This causes inconsistency over time. 

 

Is anyone else seeing this large of a shift?

I honestly had not noticed that, if it is happening to me. I'll try to pay more attention.

 

I don't personally put any value on dropping a single charge onto the scale at any point, so I don't stop and pull weights during a reloading session: I take a ten drop average at the beginning, and I keep my powder measure completely full at all times. It never gets emptied.

I throw and dump about 10-20 before loading. Then load and measure shoot one every 50 rounds. Never habe the problem you're describing.

I've never had that problem either. I throw 10-20 powder drops and take the average. If good I start loading and will check every 100-200 rounds to make sure nothing's changed.

I've found that the first 20 throws is a little off. Maybe a tenth higher than what onset it for. But after the 20 dumps then it's consistent. I test one or two per hundred. Just for piece of mind.

I'll try not stirring the powder around for a few 100 and see what it looks like.

 

When I use titegroup I have a hair clipper zip tied to the powder tube and that has helped with consistent throws. With this powder it vibrates so the big and small pieces are separated (fairly obvious) so I turned it off. Ever since I've noticed that, I've been a bit more observant of how the powder settles over time. 

 

I also keep my powder full between 50 to 75 precent. Maybe I'll try between 75 and 100 for a run and see.

I'm surprised you needed the hair clipper with Titegroup, it throws very consistently for me out of my 650 without any additional help.

Haha actually I used it for unique and red dot since they were flake powders and just kept using it for TG. I guess I could try without it but I figure if it ain't broke don't fix it.
