himurax13
Why do the guide rods have a taper in the middle? Why are they not the same width on the entire length like most guide rods?
kneelingatlas
A straight sided guide rod wedges between the lower lug of the barrel and the guide rod tunnel on a long slide.

kneelingatlas
Why is there a taper in the middle? So you can make the angle, if I have a chance I'll take a picture.
jaep1911
kneelingatlas - Do you mean "when the chamber side of the barrel dips as the slide moves backward, the the guide rod dips with the barrel. That creates an angle relative to the guide rod bushing that stays with the slide"?
kneelingatlas
No, when assembling and disassembling.
himurax13
So the taper is there to make assembly and disassembly easier? I was thinking about getting some custom guide rods next year and I was going to make them straight like everything else. I was just wondering if the taper was necessary. johnbu
I'd love some aluminum guide rods Would aluminum hold up in use? I assume it would need mil spec hard anodizing to not wear from cycling. Spendy, unless a large lot is done, but you can do colors....
kneelingatlas
CZs use plastic guide rods, aluminum will be fine.
himurax13
Aluminum is cool, but you should be looking at closed cell Delrin. They used that stuff for decades for bolts in paintball guns and it is machinable. Sent from my VS986 using Tapatalk
Open1215
They make basepads from that too. I'm planning on making several parts from it. :-)
EngineerEli
I'm intrigued by the aluminum/delrin guide rod idea. I always like moving the balance point back and forth to make sure I don't shoot better with the gun. That said, the Stock II is pretty well balanced to start with. Man I wish I had a lathe...and a mill... Edited November 4, 2015 by EngineerEli
kneelingatlas
I'm always interested in shedding weight from my steel Open guns and the guide rod is low hanging fruit.
Mo Hepworth
I would only run a Henning or Xtreme guide rod in my 40 or .38 super... I lost a major match due to using a factory guide rod in my 38 super. ..it peened to the point it was hard to take the slide off the frame...I am trying a Sprinco unit just to see how it holds up. If not,..I go back to a Henning or Xtreme guide rod with a 10lb recoil spring.
Open1215
I love my springco I'm my 2011 open gun. It really does help the recoil. I would like to try one for the tanfoglio!

Open1215
Christmas hit my wallet pretty hard. I'm happy to have gas $ and match fees for tomorrow morning. Lol let me get back in black and go from there. Thank you.
BeerBaron
No worries. Christmas can get spendy. I have 2 of them. Bought a spare but have never needed it and probably never will. Think I paid $70 for it basically brand new. The cool part about the sprinco is it still takes regular tanfo recoil springs.

Open1215
Is it the same set up as the one for 2011?
gunnit
Is it the same set up as the one for 2011? No I don't think you can use the same set up for both the 2011 and Tanfoglio. But give Sprinco a call and see if it's possible.
