SVI 9mm Major Load Data

OK you SVI 9mm Major open guys/gals, what's your load? I have been working with Brandon to build me a new SVI open gun in 9 Major. Brandon recommends two popple holes in the barrel which is something different for me. He also recommended 10.0 to 10.2gr of 3N38 under a Montana Gold 124 gr JHP.

I picked up a pound of 3N38 today just to try it in my STI open gun which has a 5" Infinity Ultramatch barrel (no popple holes). With 9.0gr of 3N38 I was getting 172.1 power factor with a COL of 1.178". I really didn't want to run any hotter load out of the gun but I did try to get 10.0 to 10.2gr in the case and it was completely full! At 9.0gr the load was compressed since I had my dies to run at 1.165 COL and the shortest it would go with the powder was 1.178. At 10.0 I would have to adjust my crimp die just to hold the bullet on the case.

What are you guys/gals running? I normally run Silhouette, HS6, or AutoComp with my STI.

The 3N38 load you mention is normally for SVI IMM in 38S not 9MM. Sil or Hs6 is my choice for 9. I run 115s with 5 popple holes and 9 something of HS6.(I say "something" because all barrels vary in FPS)

Just going by what Brandon told me. I agree Silhouette and HS6 work well in my current 9mm Major. Brandon said those powders would work along with AutoComp but at less than ideal performance. He also mentioned N350 as an option for his gun as well.

I don't think you will get 10gr of 3n38 in a 9mm case. I highly recommend trying Accurate #7 (10.0 under a 124 or 10.6 under a 115). It is a very dense powder that fits easily in a 9x19 case and makes a ton of gas to work the comp

SVi 5.5 hybrid 2 holes

My goto load is 8.7gr 3n38 with frontier 124gr RN now at 30mm OAL, the N105 has very very low pressure and is nice, BUT it feels like someon is smacking you, and its flatter with 3n38 in my gun, and loading 3n38 is SO much faster.. and I get large jugs of 3n38 cheap, n105 is 0.5KG max and more $$

at 9gr 3n38 that is a HOT HOT load, I actually find that anything over 8.7 for me does.. absolutely nothing except flatteing primer.

geco brass has the most case volume, S&B 13 has least, cbc in the middle

Doesnt make sense, but geco brass still has highest speed.

Both of my Infinity 9mm guns with two holes run on the following:

124 JHP Montana Gold Bullets

9.7 grains of 3n38 (compressed)

1.165 OAL

176-177 power factor depending on the chrono

I could cut back to 9.6 but the guns like the gas at that power factor

Thanks for the information. I ran a few rounds through my current open gun at 9.0gr of 3N38 although my OAL was a little longer than my normal 1.165" but maybe if I adjust the seating die down a little more I can compress the powder better.

I was just curios what others were running. I will probably have a few pounds of HS6, Silhouette, and AutoComp left when the new gun arrives so I can try some of my old loads and see how they preform with the barrel holes.

Still have a few more decessions to make before placing the order. I was planning on a hard chrome finish but Brandon doesn't recommend it. Hopefully within the next month I will get my order in for the 12 to 15 month wait. I'm sure it will be worth the wait from all that I have read.

DLC ftw! Assuming you want a slick, durable coating.

That's exactly the finish I'm going with after talking to Brandon. I'll do all of the controls in bright stainless to give it a little bling but the gun will be in the Infinicoat DLC. According to Brandon it offers a Rockwell C95 surface hardness with an 80% reduction in friction between the surfaces.

I'm still up in the air about the grip, my current open gun has a very aggressive STI stippled grip which I really enjoy but after reading some posts on here about the Aggressive MicroPockets I'm not sure. I know they have a tactical version which isn't as aggressive and Brandon said they could reduce the texture by .005" which would make it a little more comfortable, I'm just not sure yet. I never have cared much for skateboard tape although it does look good on the Infinity I would rather have the grip textured. I'm going with the Mobius cutout Signature grip and will most likely be the Aggressive MP.

I think I have the rest of it figured out just waiting for Brandon to give it a look over to see if he has any suggestions.

The signature grip is excellent. Get the correct size for your hands and the right length of trigger for you fingers.

The textured signature grip with cutout looks much better than grip tape, imho. :-)

In terms of texture, the tactical grip allows you to adjust your grip on the fly more easily. For reloads or whatever. With the aggressive texture, like new skate tape, your hand doesn't move.

In terms of abrasions, my little fingers get some abuse even from the tactical texture. But that also happens on 1911s. :-) So I think it's more a question of how much you establish a grip and keep it versus how much you make adjustments.

For me, my next one will be the aggressive texture with some work to tone it down in some spots.

Metric measurements mean nothing to us.

When will the rest of the world catch up to us and start using imperial measurements???;)

When will you guys come out of the stoneage and start using Metric measurements like the rest of the world??? Edited by Tino2212

I like HS6 and autocomp for 9 major. I get less dot movement with HS6.

I do too as well as Silhouette but that is with my current open gun that doesn't have any barrel ports. Are you getting better performance with HS6 & AutoComp than 3N38? I'm assuming you have 2 barrel ports in your Infinity?
