I think 3n38 is going to end IP being your favorite!

well that might not be a bad thing. I have just on 2kgs of 3N38 but only 750 grams left of N350. :(

I'll be trying the 5 loads this weekend.

8.2gn of N350 with SPP (my current load, will be shooting this to benchmark the 'feel' of the others)

8.2gn of N350 with SRP ( don't expect it to shoot any different, this will mainly be tested to see if it gets a more complete burn and a higher PF)

8.6gn of N350 with SPP (will be curious to see how this feels)

10.2 gn of 3N38 with SPP (I have high hopes for this one)

10.2gn of 3N38 with SRP

all are in starline, all 1.250 OAL and all under a 124gn RN CMJ frontier projie. so it's really a powder test. :)

report coming after this weekend.

I will say this. shooting major chews through the powder FAST! see shooting rifles sure you use more powder per round but you tend to shoot a lot less rounds. shooting 9mm minor those little 500g bottles seem to last forever. Shoot major I'm 3 weeks in and already more than half way through one of those cans of N350!

If you like the shape and the feel of the stock one, keep it. You can get excellent trigger function without exchanging it.

Properly modified EGW hammer: machined hooks, the EGW hammer when coming from Henning had .35mm hooks and when coming directly from EGW 0.8.

A good compromise is somewhere between. Dont quote me on the numbers as this is coming from a distant memory. (verify by measuring when you have the parts at hand)

Sear, hand fitted to work properly, Henning threaded trigger pin only (this is a good item), lighter hammer spring and deburred&polished rest of the trigger parts will give you a very good trigger. I shot with the stock trigger for quite a while before modifying a CZ Custom shop trigger to fit. (now it has come to an end and will be replaced as it has started to wiggle, very little material in it when it had to be drilled from 2,5mm to 3 mm to fit from CZ to Tanfo) Nowadays the best bang for the buck (IMHO) would be the Extreme trigger from Grauffel or the Tanfo online shop.

sorry for the long text

The open shooters standard gun..
Had to assemble a ipsc standard gun for the club champs (they are always shot in standard).

Did not have time to put in all the goodies, the EGW sear, flat trigger, mag well, Grauffel grips etc was left out but still decent feel and fuction into the gun with light hammer spring and a small trigger job. Some goodies went in though, Henning firing pin, Tanfo "race" hammer, new ambi safeties, *thumb rest [generic]*, ancient springco, new fiber front sight and rear sight with wider slot. Hopefully I do not have to give up that much to the guys shooting iron sights all year.

The flash gave me trouble with the pics, sorry for the quality.

I do like the old custom frames with the checkering on the trigger guard. I wish they still did that...

And this one is so little used/tight that not even Hennings slide pin nor Briley barrel will fit in the frame or slide. I bought it from a collector that only had "tested" it. Not even one scratch in the mag well area...but old small frame Tanfos are VERY durable. My Open is built on a frame with 4 mm grip screws and different grip machining and they are old...The older large frame are somewhat less durable, there the frame tends to crack. Seen some both standard and open guns with cracked frames.

BeerBaron were you able to try those loads out this past weekend ?

Curious to find out if you chrono'd the 10.2 gn of 3n38 and how that felt to you.

yep, here's what I have got:

I tried some new loads over the chrono but didn't really get a chance to shoot them much.

I tried:

8.6gn VV N350

125gn RN CMJ

1.250 OAL

fed SPP

averave PF about 173. very barky and a bit of an angry load but I don't mind it too much.

8.2gn VV N350

125gn RN CMJ

1.250 OAL

fed SRP

Wanted to see if SRP gave me any extra FPS over the SPP. it did a little. bumped avg PF up from about 166 to 168. all ignited just fine.

10.2gn VV 3N38

125gn RN CMJ

1.250 OAL

fed SRP

This load is noticeably less noisy than the N350 and does seem nicer to shoot (though I didn't get to shoot many rounds). avg PF was 168.

It looks like 3N38 will be my fav powder. Shame I have to use nearly 30% more by weight to make the same PF as I do with N350!! VV is already over $50 a pound here so bumping up 30% useage for the same PF kind of sucks. wish they sold it by volume not weight!!! :)

I can't really comment much on how it really shoots or how clean the 3N38 burns etc compared to the N350 loads I've been shooting but the little taste I had certainly makes me want another. :) I'll be loading up some more 3N38 rounds.

Vectan powder is practically un heard of here unfortunately. :(

We get the ADI (hodgdon) powders pretty cheap (around US $130 for 2kg - just over 4 pounds) and the AP100 is a decent powder for 38 super major, but the VV stuff is a lot cleaner burning and seems nicer to shoot to me.

We can also get winchester autocomp and a few guys like that.

To be honest, as long as I can continue to buy the VV stuff reliably I'll just wear the cost and use it. After all we want the best tool for the job. Plus the VV powder smells nice. :)

Cheely sidemount

Beerbaron

Here is one for you, the Cheely moount and the Sidewinder XL

post-11121-0-25527000-1409553235_thumb.j

Racker needed a little adjustment in order not to touch the C-more

(don't know if it was because i bent it earlier to give as much space as possible for my thumb))

That is excellent :) so you got your cheely mount already? I'm super jealous! jealous of your henning magwell too!

I have the sidewinder XL but haven't tried to fit it yet. looks like it will just work but only just.

an update on my progress. I chrono'd the 10.2gn 3N38 load and it's a nice 168 avg pf. But I had a level 3 match last weekend so of course before the match I tweaked the powder up to 10.4gn just to be safe. then of course the threatened match chrono never happened!

but, the load was really nice. The gun shoot very well. I had sighted it in roughly at 15m the weekend before but I knew it was hitting a little high (I didn't mind as I tend to drag shots down just a little when shooting fast). I shot pretty well overall. no PT's for the match. only 5 D's on day one and 1 mike (they were on the very first stage which had some prone shooting, I'd never shot the gun prone before and put one shot high and had a few D's). The second day went really well with only 1 D and no mikes right up to the last stage where I caught 3 of the bastards! It was a 30 meter array and i'd not had time to shoot the gun at that distance yet. My friend warned me with an open gun sighted in at 15m it will shoot quite a bit high at 30m. well I did aim low but not enough (was not taking into account that even at 15m it shoots higher than POA). so all my hits were right along the top of the targets and 3 were over the top. :( 19% on that stage! but was only a 60 pointer.

Still, I finished up 52% and on one medium 120 point stage I was 79.41% including a bit of red mist which saw me triple tap 2 targets at the end (costing me probably half a second on a 15 second stage). Without that rush of blood I'd have been up in the 80% on that stage which is a good feeling. I'm still very much a below average shooter but considering I've only had the open gun a month and still have some things to sort out I was fairly happy.

The main point was the gun ran absolutely flawlessly. Considering it still has the standard (way heavy) hammer spring, the trigger is completely standard (not even adjusted yet). all i've added is the 90 mount, sprinco and some grip tape. Not a single FTF, stovepipe, light strike or any malf for the whole match. I'm running rifle primers too.

So the loads. I ran with the 10.4gn 3N38 load and it ran really nicely. the gun shoots super flat. The rest of my squad thought it was about the loudest gun on earth but it's quite pleasant to shoot. lol. Yes it's a bit barky and a bit of a push in the hand, but it's easy to drive the gun and the dot now does kind of a semi circle rather than just going up and down. I don't think it even leaves the glass now.

I'm not fairly sure I like the 3N38 load better than the N350 load. Looks like I'll keep as much 3N38 for matches as I can and shoot the N350 in practice. don't get me wrong, both are still great powders for a 38 super open gun with heaps of holes like the eric V12.

I'm a happy camper. :)

Cheely mount...I had to have some professionals bring it to me. Had it already last week. Works/ looks good BUT i tend to hit my thumb in the lower left corner of it. Takes getting used to.

Henning mag well, I would not use it for any mags shorter than 140mm, it is too deep. One could of course machine away a bit of it, i think somebody did that already on this forum.

Sidewinder XL will work fine, mine is severely bent upwards not to hit my thumb. Checked and compared with pics of what it looked like when i got it.

Don't fear 168...i shoot 165 normally, might drop close to 161when it gets cold.

Red dot sighting....i try to sight the C-more in on at least 35 to 40m otherwise i always shoot above on the long shots. Good or bad don't know but works for me.

That's a great looking piece. No one in the USA is jealous of your ability to get that at all. Yep, no one. I'm not jealous either.

OK, I am. I cerakoted my Stock III to resemble the extreme version. Now I just need to get the magazine pads to complete the look. Step after that is the internals.
