shred Posted January 7, 2005 Share Posted January 7, 2005 If you haven't got an anti-spyware tool (or even if you do, they don't all catch everything), pop on over to www.microsoft.com and get the free anti-spyware beta. It's in suspiciously good shape for a beta and has quite a few good sub-tools thrown in. Get it now before they want to charge you for it It's actually based off the Giant anti-spyware tool.. This morning I ran the MS program and it didn't flag any files. I then turned right around and ran "Ad-Aware SE" and it flagged 25 critical items. SiG Lady Posted January 7, 2005 Share Posted January 7, 2005 What I've found, though--and your mileage may vary on this--that if you pile on TOO many anti-virus and anti-whatever programs, they can start interfering with each other and start interfering with other things, too. I limit myself to one major $ub$cription anti-virus ware and about three free smaller wares that function well all in slightly different ways. Adaware and SpybotS&D have upgraded themselves considerably and I've had them find NO crap at all on my system whenever I scan. Oh, and that other free ware is McAfee 'Stinger' which was updated as of December 14 and may have a new update by now... even though I just updated my copy of it last week...... First and foremost, Don’t browse with IE on a Mac, use Apple’s Safari, or Firefox and make sure the user agent isn’t set to emulate IE. Set cookies to only be accepted from sites you navigate to, or turn them to manual or off. Set Safari and Firefox to not automatically open/unstuff items after downloading them. Set your mail program to not automatically display complex HTML and images files. Make sure you have all sharing options off in the System Preferences Sharing pane. Set your password to something very non-trivial (at least 8 mixed alpha/numeric characters and mix with a few capitals). Get a piece of shareware called Cocktail and run it’s Pilot feature every couple weeks with every single user, system and internet cache clearing option enabled along with permission repair and all cron script runs. Empty all browser cookies every week or two (this can also be set in the Cocktail Pilot run). The most important items in OSX for internet security are not browsing using MS code as your browser and setting a very secure password. The UNIX system behind OSX is very secure and safe if you play it safe. It is so much harder to crack than any other OS (as long as your password is not compromised) that most intruders walk away from UNIX/LINUX systems when they find them as long as they are properly clamped down. Well, I updated right before comparing the two. All I can think of is that MS might be onto something with the Anti-Spyware Network. I think you might find that adaware is flagging a MS-written part of Internet Explorer that is shipped with the browser/operating system.
