dajarrel
Santa (in the persons of my wife and son) brought me a XM satellite radio for Christmas. I haven't installed it in my truck yet, but they also bought me a "boom-box" to put the portable module in. I still haven't been able to listen to all the channels, but I'm working on it dj
Guest Larry Cazes
How much is the monthly service fee? How is the reception inside?
Precision40
How much is the monthly service fee? How is the reception inside? I have a Delphi system and it says to mount the antenae on the roof of the vehicle, but I mounted mine on my dash and the reception is fine. The normal subscription fee is about $10 a month. The great thing I like about the Delphi system is that it has a big display and is very user friendly.
kimel
Reception varies between XM and Sirius around the country. Here in the Pacific Northwest Sirius has better reception than XM due to satellite placement. While XM works up here, it just isn't as solid coverage-wise as Sirius is. At least at this point. A local Techno-Geek did an pretty extensive comparison between the two about six months ago and wrote it up in a local paper. His findings pretty much agreed with folks I have talked to around here. YMMV. Indoor reception is going to depend a LOT on what type of structure you are in and window orientation. Even with good windows facing south you may be screwed if they are Low-E windows as the Low-E coating in some windows is also a pretty good RF shield. Satellite Radio was on my Christmas List but Santa didn't come through for me so I guess I will have to take matters into my own hands. The 2nd generation receivers are just now hitting the market with digital recorders built-in and all that neat stuff so I may decide to wait a bit to see what the technology arms race brings. But it is wayyyyy cool stuff and I would have paid a lot more than $10 to not have had to listen to all the holiday ads this past month.
Mig
Once you start listening to XM Radio you won't go back to commerical radio. Got XM back in the summer and just really enjoy it. You'll be very happy with it.

Chriss Grube
Nothing sucks more than driving the wife's vehicle without XM. I haven't had a regular radio station on in my truck since I got XM. 10 bucks a month to not have to listen to the morning retards on the radio is well worth it. ranger
My military duties have me all over the country. Recently drove to PA from GA and back - it was great with Sirious SAT radio. Never changed channels, never lost the station (except while filling up with gas under a a cover!), and never searched for a station. I never search the FM dials again and do not carry CDs. EricW
Any Sirius radios made yets that take the place of a factory car radio? I also really wish they had one in the same physical format as an iPod.
dajarrel
Eric, My son just installed a Clarion radio that was Sirius compatable. He had to buy the reciever module but it is different than my XM as it is a hardwired system and mine was bought with a RF modulator because it was "portable"; that is mounted on the dash for portability. dj
Shooter Grrl
Any Sirius radios made yets that take the place of a factory car radio? I also really wish they had one in the same physical format as an iPod. Yup. I have a Kenwood Deck in the Tahoe. All integrated, works beautifully. A warning about XM guys... they believe in censorship and utilize their rights to censor what they air. For that reason alone, I recommend Sirius. I went to Best Buy today to get Sirius put in the caddy, but they are completely sold out of units DOH!
kimel
Sirius seems to be the polar opposite of XM in terms of sensorship. They have the NRA radio show, Howard Stern (coming soon or so they say) and NPR...to name just a few. Both of them have their channel line-ups online. I had kind of figured that by now they would be headed in the same direction as Dish Network and DirecTV...both offering virtually identical content. But satellite radio apparently has enough diversity that there isn't a total duplication...yet. Now we just need to get a USPSA/IPSC radio show going on satellite.... Chriss Grube
XM seems to have a better selection of music. Sirius was more for hearing a bunch of idiots running their mouths. I get enough of that at work so I went with the music.

kimel
<Blowing dust off of thread> Well, I decided last year to wait for the 2nd generation of receivers while I pondered the whole XM vs Sirius question. 2nd Gen gear hit this summer and it was definately worth the wait. I finally went with XM because they have a better music selection and they have the NHL, MLB and the PAC-10. Still no IPSC channel though. I was pretty much forced to going to satellite radio by Clear Channel Broadcasting Inc. But the rest of that will have to wait for a hate rant. JRBean
I really like my XM radio, almost never listen to regular radio anymore. I originally chose XM over Sirius because XM was the only one that carried Nascar. However, Sirius just signed a 5 year contract to be the exclusive sattelite carrier for Nascar starting in 2007. So it looks likes X-mas 2006 I'll be getting an in dash unit that is setup for Sirius.
boo radley
I, too, am a huge XM fan -- I'm unhappy they kicked up the subscription fee to $12.95 a few months ago, but pleased I can now get it streamed on the PC -- handy when reloading! The music is great. It's so wonderful NOT to hear commercial AOR crap. Leo Kotke covering Aerosmith's 'Sweet Emotion'. Are you kidding?

Flexmoney
Looks like AOL has XM on AOL Radio (as part of AOL...no extra charge). OK...I'm not sure how many channels XM has, but AOL only seems to carry about 200 channels. I don't see the sports stuff (like zhunter's channel). kimel
XM doesn't even do the sports channels on their own streaming feed for some reason that I just can't understand. Their stream is subscription based (free if you have XM already) but they don't include that stuff. But the stream includes the AOL channels which are not available via satellite (at least I haven't run across them). My vote for stupidest XM Channel: Playboy channel (premium channel). The last thing I want is some deviant listening to audio porn while driving down the road. It's bad enough that seening porn playing on in-car DVD players has become commonplace.
