  1. The fact that almost nobody uses lead for open should give you a clue.
  2. Sorry, but I'm a little confused. How exactly is C-more doing something manipulative? Same with Tanfoglio? Tanfoglio has never made more than the generic mount, and is not 'holding back' any other future product until cleaning out inventory. Frankly, they don't make any custom mounts for any sights, only the generic rails, and probably never will. I also don't think that C-more is discontinuing the rail-mount. I think the STS is intended to augment, not replace, their current product line. Fact is that most all mounts are designed for a specific sight and specific gun, and are made by 3rd party vendors. Since it takes time and effort to design the mounts, they make them for the most popular and largest market. Tanfoglio, unfortunately, is less popular in the USA, and does not represent a big demand. Same for the Burris. Furthermore, NEW mounts for new sights are slower to enter the market for less popular guns (like Tanfoglio). Unfortunately, we either have to buy the 'popular' (read expensive) and well established dots and mounts for our Tanfoglios, or visit a gunsmith for a custom built version. I've been wanting an Aimpoint Micro for months. The mount and dot are around $700. I considered the Burris or Sig micro copy, but there are NO mounts for them. Oh well. Live with my cmore a little longer. Oh, and that 1deg tilt is necessary to properly align the sight, otherwise you run out of vertical travel.
  3. That's my bling! I bought them at a local fastner store. I just took one of the existing screws in, figured out the size, then rummaged around in the bolts and screws looking for something interesting. I think it is called 'button head' in stainless steel. The important part is to get a few matching nuts. If you have to cut the screws (cause they are too long), use a pre-installed nut to fix the threads after the cut. Sadly, my Aimpoint broke. I had to install my spare C-more (two sided mount) and remove the bling. Fortunately, the Aimpoint has a lifetime warranty.
  4. Do the math. What's your time and monetary investment for rescuing $50 worth of ammo? Intertial bullet pullers are $15 - $20. Die type are $30 - $40. So that'sa net $10 to $35 recovered. Is your time worth it? I know that my wife gets angry when I sit on the floor in the living room, watching CSI with her, and slamming my inertial bullet puller on the carpet every 20 seconds. After 15 bullets, she sends me out to the garage! It's worth the $35 then!!
  5. I had a factory racker, and did not like it. It seemed too close to my thumb. I had my gunsmith fit a sidewinder (before Henning had them 'off the shelf'). Even better, I had him install a ball-plunger and drill a detent on the racker. It holds the sidewinder in place, but a quick pull and it comes right off!! Best of both worlds!!
  6. Yea, I agree that I hate a lot of the 'lite' versions, and I really hate when I'm forced to use them. I was more interested in some of the iphone apps that alllow direct forum participation, instead of using safari....
  7. Seriously though, go to a few shooting matches and make some friends. Books and vidoes are helpful and informative, but seeing a few presses in-action REALLY helps the pros and cons of each one.
  8. I'll vote against a 'turret press' like the lee. They work, but 3 or 4 pulls per bullet gets old in a hurry. I thought mine was great, until I upgraded to an auto-index progressive. Now I hate the turret. In fact, I gave the turret to some poor schmuck who didn't know any better (Jan).
  9. Actually, to maximize the chance of hearing the shot, you want to be as close to the shooter as possible. If the steel is 50ft from the shooter, there's 106ms delay between hearing the sounds. If the steel is 50 yards, that's 320ms. If you were to stand next to the steel, the delay would be the shortest, 10ms for the 50ft steel, and 33ms for 50 yard steel. If you're not standing right next to the shooter, the time it takes the sound of the gun shot to travel to your ears is ALWAYS working to decrease the delay between the two sounds. Since we routinely hear two distinct gunshots when people are shooting 2-alpha on paper, and those splits can be as low as 150 ms, it think it is reasonable to expect to hear bang-ting when shooting steel. (edit: actually, now that I think about it, anywhere directly behind the shooter would yield the same resut, but as soon as you are off-center, the vector math works against you.) Now, seeing the bullet strike.. Again, you want to stand as close to the shooter as possible, so the sound delay doesn't subtract from the possible difference between the events. At 50 feet, if you are standing next to the shooter, there is a 58ms delay between the sound and the sight of impact. At 50 yards, the delay is 176ms. Considering that a 30 frames/second video appears fluid, but not high quality, the eye/brain is probably right at the edge of detecting separate images instead of fluid motion. 30 frames per second is about 33ms between frames. So, as a wild guess, it is likely that anything under 33ms delay can be perceived. However, since in the above question, we are mixing auditory and visual response times of the brain... who knows. I do think that 176ms (50 yard steel), is EASILY noticed. (edit: in this case, since the speed of light is so much faster than sound, the best place to stand is still right near the shooter. If you move farther back, the sound-sight delay shrinks.)
  10. Mine don't break, but they do get chewed up and mangled a lot. The only problem is that they sometimes interfere with the case feeder, if they are too distored.
  11. I agree, I can surf the forum OK. However, i do find it less than optimal. I think that 'mobile' versions of web pages, and even optimized custom apps offer a better experinece. For example, try surfing ebay.com.... then try the ebay app. The App is a much better and faster experinece. I'm not a software guy, but it seems that the TouchBB app might not be too hard to support here... check out the link above.
  12. Brian, et al: Have you done any research to add a mobile friendly verions of the forum? Personally, I think you should write a BE iPHone app that gives us easy access while on-the-go. Using the standard iphone web browser works, but is clumbsy, and requires lots of zooming and panning. As an alternative, have you looked into supporting iPhone forum reading apps, like this one: http://www.messageforums.net/iphoneforumreader.php ? Thanks, Jeff
  13. Actually, this was all a ruse to increase Henning's sales. I wanted everyone to think they should stock up on spare parts !! Just kidding. Got my replacement from Henning today. Hopefully, I'll find a match this weekend...
  14. Congratulations on your decision. I assume you are getting 38 Super. Read the EAA/Tanfoglio forum (see Henning leak below). I know that Rich might be able to order them: http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showforum=92 Sometimes Henning has them too: http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showforum=159 and http://www.henningshootsguns.com/
  15. I agree, the 10 round factory mag is very good. I've had great luck with 'hot lips' mags from the gun shows, but maybe my 10/22 has lots of slop. I've heard that these magazines are adjustable, and high quality: http://www.tacticalinc.com/mags-loaders-c-482_489.html
  16. I checked the guide rod. It is the same length as the 'stock' rod, and there is no way it was hitting the bushing. I'm not exactly sure when the bushing actually broke, but the gun started to malf because of the metal scrap after 10 rounds. The only thing I can imagine is that I installed the rod and spring incorrectly. I might have carelessly caught the spring on the lip of the bushing, instead of going inside the bushing. It would then be possible for the spring to reach full compression before the slide reached full travel. As a result, there could be considerable amount of force passed through the compressed spring and directly onto the lip of the bushing. Kinda far fetched, but (as mythbusters would say) plausible.
  17. I'm running a 12# spring. What I can't figure out is what was hitting it. The bushing is not impact bearing (during slide motion). It only holds the spring and lets the guide rod slide through...
  18. My Gold Team stopped working today (just after I finally got the trigger and sear setup correctly). I was worried that I had done something wrong, but found chunks of metal in the dust cover and then saw the guide rod bushing. I've attached a picture. Is this normal? I'm using Henning's new guide rod. I didn't know the bushing was under so much stress? I'm still surprised it broke. Is this common? Happen to any other Tanfoglios?
  19. I think that before you get the bullet stuck in the barrell, you'll find that the brass doesn't seal well against the chamber wall and you'll get massive amounts of 'blow back' resulting in really dirty brass and nasty gunk all over the slide, chamber, magazine, and breech face.
  20. Surefire plugs!! Cooler than muffs, still hear people talking, cheap, comfortable, and great protection. I shoot my open gun (loud with V-8 holes and compensator), and don't ever feel the need to double-up. I really hate the 'crunch, rustle, zip-zop, crackle' noises with the amplified headset. Really annoying.
  21. Is the official measured length for a loaded or unloaded magazine? Can't you cut the bottom of the the floor plate all together? All you need is a feature to capture the _END_ of the spring, then the rest of the spring could protude out the bottom a little... I also always wondered if we could rig an external coil-spring (like the 10/22 big sticks), and add width instead of height. You would need some kind of combo spring system, since the coil would not fit inside the mag well.
  22. Try these first. I can hear conversations and still shoot open without double-plug. Plus there is no loud exaggeration of 'crunch crunch' as I walk on gravel. http://www.surefire.com/EP3-Sonic-Defenders
  23. I'm not going to try to talk you out of Dillon, but I will add a few comments. Why the 550? It is probably the least attractive combo. For less money, I'd rather have a Square Deal B. It has 4 stations too, plus it has auto indexing. The 550 doesn't seem like much of an upgrade. It costs more, still only has 4 stations, and doesn't even have auto indexing. The only two things it has over the Square Deal B is rifle calibers and standard size dies. I don't even consider the case feeder as a great addition, since it is expensive (similar to the 650 price). I would go straight to the 5 die presses with auto indexing. 650 or LNL AP. I owned two Square Deal B (one for misc use, and one dedicated to my primary load). When I decided to upgrade, I totally ignored the 550. I spent a lot of time looking at the 650 and LNL AP. Both are great presses, and I would have been happy with either. The decison came down to the differences in the primer mechanism and the total cost of ownership.
