    Socks

+1 for smartwool. The liners + med. thick work great. Make sure your shoes are tight so the sock does not bunch up. Paul
  3. Too late, but I'll through the Leupold VXII 1-4x20, or the VXIII 1.5-5x20 out there. Paul
  4. There is nothing wrong with the current AR/M4 platform. It is a robust system that has proven accurate and reliable. I'd say that I feel confident that I can go 1000 to 1500 rounds without cleaning, and 4000 to 5000 rounds with only taking out the bolt and BC and wiping them every 1000 rounds or so. However after those 5000 rd some of the parts may be so caked with carbon that its more cost efficient to replace them instead of clean them. Now this maintenance routine is for the action. If the barrel is neglected or not cleaned properly for more then a 1000 rd I think you will see a significant loss of accuracy. This accuracy loss will increase exponentially after every 1000 to 1500 rd without cleaning. If your AR is a noisemaker and you're not concerned with accuracy then blast away. The piston system allows you to easily go 8000 to 10000 rd before you'll see maintenance related failures. This is going to cause excessive wear on the barrel if the fouling is not removed from the bore every 500 rd or so, reducing barrel life to say 10000 to 15000 rd as apposed to the 25000 to 30000 you mint see out of a chromemoly chrome lined barrel. So if you shoot your HK 416, LWRC, or POF to failure then you can change barrels as you clean the weapon. This low maintenance system is beneficial if you are a high round count shooter, like a shooting instructor, or your training routine consumes several thousands of rounds a week. This will allow you to focus on training and spend less time caring for your training aid (AR/M4). As far as the mechanics of the system, there are some differences that I've seen with the models I've handled. Some are self regulating (only using the minimum amount of force to cycle the system no matter how much gas pressure is applied to the system) and some aren't. Some are a gas tappet system (like a M-14/M1A, FN FAL) and some are a true piston system ( like a AK47, SKS). Both tappet and piston systems have advantages and disadvantages. In my opinion there is some performance lost with the tappet/piston systems. The shift of weight as the piston head and rod move the gun during cycle disrupting follow through, making recovery and second shots more time consuming. This movement during the shift of weight also may move the gun as the bullet is leaving the barrel, reducing the accuracy of the weapon. Also if the gas port is far enough back from the muzzle the system can begin unlocking and causing variations in gas pressure and loss of accuracy. This timing issue is also faced with the current gas impingement system on the AR/M4 series, however there has been 50 years of development to rectify the problem. So if it is worth your dime to invest in the newer system then by all means spend it. But know that you are sacrificing a small bit of performance for increased reliability. After all when buying guns its not necessarily about what we need as much as what we want. YMMV Paul
  5. Glock 35. Changed the sights, guide rod, 15lb spring, $0.25 trigger job, and some extend mags. Ready to race in USPSA Production, Limited 10, and Limited. Even IDPA if I'm feeling tacticool. Paul
  6. No, it will not change unless you move the sight or barrel. Paul
  7. Defiantly roll your own. ARs are to easy to build. Pick parts you like and screw the thing together. You don't need high end parts to be competitive. I think one could shoot for quite a while before expensive parts were a huge difference in placing. As long as the gun is reliable. Paul

    Glock sights

I'm currently running a black Dawson adj rear and .100 FO front on a Glock 35. I had a .090 FO front on a glock 34, I sold in a moment of weakness. Loved the thinner sight, but can't find another one. I've started opening up the rear notch on the Dawson rear sight with a file. I think this will work out since I cant find a .090 FO front. Paul
  9. I have a DOH and never had an issue with Dawsons on a Glock 35. Paul
  10. Is the ACOG TA01 with cross hair or stadia lines? If it has cross hairs, pick a distance and zero (200 to 300 and know your hold out to 400). If it has the stadia lines, they mean little if the trajectory on your ammo/rifle don't match the round the optic was intended for. However, the stadia lines are still useful. I like to pick a distance to zero, then pick a stadia line to zero on. Once I've done that I see where the other lines hit. I keep switching zero distances and stadia lines till I'm happy with the results. Then practice till the holds become second nature. Paul
  11. I like the idea of one gun that does it all. I wonder what would be more difficult changing gun platforms from 2011 to glock or adjusting timing from major IPSC to IDPA PF 135? Paul

  13. The dot sight/ACOG combo work for people who are not able to use BAC. Paul
  14. The few times I've played with the Spector the stand out was the extremely unforgiving eye relief. If your head position is a little off it really distorts the sight picture, and if you shoot from a head up and back position there is no way to mount the scope far enough back on the receiver for proper eye relief. Collapsing the stock can help but then you've changed your LOP and changed you hand position in relation to the trigger. However the retical works well and the glass is clear. If you are a nose on charging handle shooter it may work out, but for me there are better mouse traps. Paul
  15. I have some experience with the Jpoint/ACOG. The only issue I've seen is with people that have been shooting an AR for a wile. They've programed a head position over many years and even with practice when put under time constraints they end up looking through the ACOG and shooting. Using a chin weld leaves the head kind of floating and its difficult to find the dot, and easy to lose it during recoil. However it allows for a more heads up shooting position, which gives you more use you periferal vision and allows you to take in more of your shooting environment. Its a good concept and if you aren't burdened with alot of mussel memory then perhaps you could pick it up easily. I find as a new shooter, the score on the short range stages are close, and the big difference are the people that can hit far and quick. So time gained with a dot sight is quickly lost to those using magnification (and skill) on the longer stages. So for tactical its not an option, and I think a low powered variable would serve better then a fixed or dot. For open maybe if you started with it and trained the head movement instead of the rifle twist. whatever you have more time behind is what you will be best with. YMMV Paul
  16. Looks like a hell of a match, sorry I missed it. When is the next one? Were all the guns issue equ.? Who took top honers? Thanks, Paul
  17. I'm looking for the best place to find a replacement mag spring and follower for a rem 1100 cm. Thanks, Paul
  18. Where is the gas port on the barrel at 6", 9", or 12"? can you swap their barrel for any AR15 barrel? I've fired a HK416 a few times and remember alot of movement on the gun, more so then other 10" barreled ARs I've shot may be because of the tappet and rod adding to the moving parts.
  19. Has anyone tried these? are they worth the price?
  20. Okay everybudy agrees that a 12" rifle length gas system cycles less violently then a 6" carbine length gas system. Would the shorter barrel (14 1/2" or 16") gas system make a comp more effective? which would you gain more benefet from, the bolt carrier moving less abruptly or the comp holding the the rifle flat?
  21. You might try a 8lb connector, 6lb trigger spring, a reduced power striker spring, and lots of polishing. This probably wont be as light as a 3.5lb connector, but will brake more crisply. Cheap to try, and you might like crisp over light. Paul
