  1. 158 fmjs are pretty rare, maybe they're plated bullets that have the crimp cut through the plating? I would imagine that few revo shooters either shoot .38s out of .38 chambers or .357 out of .357, everyone I know is shooting .38 or even .38 short colt out of .357 chambers. Accuracy can be just fine at up to 50 yards. There's a bunch of money to be saved shooting lead or moly, as well. It doesn't do this with other ammo, does it?
  2. A good trigger is going to make way more difference than anything else you can buy! I like to do my own work, but I've shot both Randy Lee and Carmonized guns and they're incredible. Practice those reloads, and you're there!
  3. Tom, the lube groove is pretty wide and a little far down. I'm taper crimping with a 9mm die. I'll let you guys know what happens accuracy-wise in a few days!
  4. Thanks for the help! I've been through the reloading forum, but I couldn't find quite what I was looking for. The main thing I'm not sure about, is that there is a lube ring on the bullets about where I want to crimp. The Billy 160s are .060" longer than the Berry's 158s, so I'm trying them loaded .025" longer with a lighter charge to start. That gives me about .070" (eyeballing) between the case mouth and the lube groove to crimp onto. I normally only crimp about .001" with plated bullets, should I crimp these more? They sure feel slick! I'm going to try the Billy or Bayou 170s next, if I like the 160s better than the 135s.
  5. Hey guys, hopefully you can give me a suggestion for a new icore load. I've been shooting this for a few years: starline .38 short colt, federal 100s, 3.2 clays, berry's 158 rn 1.150 oal Accuracy is fair, makes 130 pf, but plated bullets keep getting more expensive. I bought a box each of 135rn and 160rn Billy Bullets, and the 160s are a bit longer than the berry's. I'd appreciate it if anyone would share their choice of powder, oal, or any other info about these particular bullets. Rudy, by the way, was very helpful, sent the stuff with only a promise of a check, and got them here yesterday after I ordered them monday!
  6. yep, you just type in some specs, and that thing goes to town, churning out parts. easy as pie. I've never messed with one of those toolroom lathes, just standard stuff. Besides being super stiff, what's the difference? Can you get within a few tenths consistently?
  7. He'll shine in the challenge when they use blanks. Not saying I could do what he does, I'd end up with a burnt leg and a compound fracture in about 5 seconds. Knives and slingshots? Really? At least they finally shot a scattergun. Good to see Kelly keep coming through, what he lacks in tact he makes up for in skill.
  8. Episode 8 head to head challenge - the Stanley TR250 Sharpshooter Plus event! I'm hoping for some shotgun stuff, none of that yet. The Trick shot episode looks pretty cool, always wanted to try sighting a rifle with a mirror!
  9. I was warned for "almost" breaking the 180, just as you described, within my first few matches - and I probably did break it. I quit using the switch hand reload, and I'm more careful when going right to left now. It's easy to fumble a revo reload (especially with my two left hands), so I can't see letting us get away with breaking the 180. If the cylinder didn't open, gun got turned at crowd anyway, and the shooter was still fumbling to open it, might not be good. Oh yeah, got sent home 1st time last year for putting a loaded moonclip down on the safe table to help someone with a broken gun..........
  10. Gotta love not only the AD, but the facial contortions on Andre! And by the way, Denny seems to be a good enough shot overall, but anybody know what cowboy mounted shooters use to pop balloons on horseback? I'm hoping it's JJ vs Blake, hopefully they'll get more competition shooters in the next season.
  11. I just had my 627 self-lock a few months ago. When I was cleaning the gun, I noticed the cylinder release was loose. I removed it, cleaned the threads, and put a drop of loctite on it. The next morning, I went to the safe table, got the gun out, and the flag was up, hammer locked. I was able to push the flag down with my finger, and turn the gun upside down and smack it in my palm, and raise the flag again. I had to take the POS apart at the safe table, and remove the lock before the match. It's out of my wife's 642 now, too. I didn't slather a ton of loctite on it, but that's what must have done it.
  12. I can't comment on the badgers, but I've had hogues on both my carry gun and my match gun for years, and they're still beautiful. They're cocobolo and pau ferro. The stuff is so hard and dense, they don't need any finish other than wax.
  13. Eye relief is the distance from the rear lens to your eyeball. Anything listed as a long eye relief handgun scope should be have proper eye relief, with the higher power scopes working in a smaller range and in general being more aggravating. I know the leupold and burris scopes will hold up, but less expensive scopes may fall apart, depending on what your encore is chambered for. Good luck!

You can sometimes fit a shim to one side of the hammer to take out lateral play. I don't know if it makes much difference or not, but the hammer should hit the primer a little harder if it doesn't hit the frame on the way down.
  15. I sometimes shoot silhouette, and the old timers tell me that 29s were stretching frames after a few thousand full power .44 mags. I have had a few factory installed problems with my 627, but nothing due to wear in about 25,000 rounds. I'm sure that a S&W revo would come out ahead of most autos in repair costs/service life!
  16. "My cleaning protocol includes bronze brushing chambers and barrel with Kleenbore Formula 3, residue removal via patch, followed by wet-patching chambers and barrel with Formula 3, dry patching, patching with Weapon Shield, followed by dry-patching. Powder stain/residue removal from the cylinder face and forcing cone is effected with Lead-Free wipes. " Wow! that's quite the regimen.
  17. I can't see the point in putting non adjustable sights on a target gun that came with them. Might be nice on a carry gun. Could you grind up a set of factory sights to the shape you want?
  18. Virginia count isn't that common in the matches I've been to. I've mostly shot it in classifiers.
  19. We're all comparing our quality component handloads with the worst Wal-mart has to offer! Compared with buck a pop premium ammo, my reloads aren't any more accurate. Compared to white box, or worse, I'm only saving about 25%. Ok, I'm not saving squat, just shooting more! Of course, I have to try things that don't work in order to stumble into those that do.
  20. The reason it doesn't work too well is that .22 lr, long, and short use "heeled" bullets where the case is roughly the size of the bullet, and there's an undersize flange thing on the bottom of the bullet that the case crimps onto. A .22 magnum has a bullet that fits right into the case, just like any other modern cartridge, so the case diameter is about the size of the bullet plus the case walls. I've never tried it, but the difference in sizes is what causes the cases to split.
  21. That lump on the frame is what keeps the cylinder from sliding back! The sharp back edge of the cylinder shoudn't ever come past it. I'm not sure what could cause it to do so, maybe a bent crane? Did both 625s come from the same place?
  22. Just out of curiousity, will a new part change the timing?
  23. Wow, if I had problems like that I'd be demanding a new one! I still haven't gotten a call or email returned, but I have the name of someone to bug now. They have apparently all been on vacation. I polished the chambers lots more with green rouge and a 3/8" felt bob, and they don't stick bad enough to poke any holes in my hand now. This gun is unfortunately very accurate, so I won't sell it off!
  24. Wow, you have me beat! What went wrong?
  25. I've met a couple people who prefer the feel of the L or K over the N frame, but I'm not one of them. I know 686s cost less, but cutting it and buying the oddball moons would eat up most of the cost split anyways. I have a 627, and I appreciate the versatility. I'd be looking at the pro model if I was doing it over. The next revo I buy will be a 625.
