  1. Dispite the "stay away from 9mm", I think that's the way too go!!! I've sold all my 38 Super guns and have 2 ea. 9mm open guns..... would never go back! Buy SV mags even if you have a STI gun. Brass is usually FREE. I pitch the brass after 3 or 4 reloads. No MATTER which caliber you choose buy the "U" die from Lee or EGW. HS-6, 3N38, N350 + more are good for loading to 9mm major. I do load "long" (1.200") and have found certain bullet profiles allow this (most RNose) without chamber / bore interfernce. The BIGGEST problem that I have seen with either caliber, is the ejection of the spent case.....lot's of other things cause open gun "stovepipes", but the way the EJECTOR hit is tossing the case is the #1 problem I have noticed. MAKE sure your gun's ejector is tuned so that the cases are leaving "flat", not banging on the scope mount.... You WILL be a Happy Camper with 9MM!!!
  2. As much as I miss... I would like to see about a 40 round magazine... I could shoot faster and miss more, (this mag would ONLY be for 9mm) ... So, you guys could still wonder about the 9mm ADVANTAGE when it come to brass. ( Someone GAVE me 5 gallons of once fired brass for Christmas) Happy New Year!!!
  3. 9mm major works for me. Have put many rounds down range, all 171 Pf x124 rn bullets.... Didn't like #7625... 2 case seperations + too fast? I can get a safe 3,4,5 reloads & pitch them when I can feel no resistance when I seat the primer.... I think the BIG thing is the Lee "U" sizing die.... never leave home without it!! I put vertually no crimp (not needed) and run SV mags and 124 rn at about 1.119/ 1.2200 overall lenght, a Sprinco and a *8 spring. I guage every round and pitch anything that looks suspicious (marks at the bottom of the case). I've sold 2 of my 38 Super guns... got one to go. I usually come home with more brass than I've shot,... who wants 9mm??? it's junk right???, send me all your 9mm brass!!!
  4. What the opinion of the Sagia 12 guage????.... The 10 round mags are out. Lots of parts availible. I've been sitting on a couple for a while (no 10 round mags were being made then). All the good stuff done to the gun + barrel ported, a nice shooter for the $$$$. (I've had a Benelli S90). I have too shoot in the "open" class anyhow, so the shotgun really has no bearing on my situation. What's up?
  5. Chimin in... I have 3ea. 38 super open guns sitting in the safe.... made the switch to 9mm major about a year ago.... Happy camper!!! Hardly ever get any brass back.... Who cares, it's 9mm ??? True the powder selections are smaller, but they are MORE than needed to get the job done. I load extra long(1.200) round nose's, using only either MT Gold 124's or Amscor 124 r noses.(the only profiles that do not hit my lands/starting area at that length w/my Trubor set-up). I feel that the EGW "U" die is a must have at this OAL. I have no trouble w/loose bullets. SV mags, no spacers,Grams springs. 8# recoil spring...... HANG ON.... I use a SPRINCO recoil guide! Works for me!!!, been a near flawless set-up so far. If you go to a high round count "loss brass" match, the 9mm makes lots of sense, I usually go home with more brass than I've shot.
  6. Pm me if you want EAA. Also have a Pre Para. nicer STI. All are 38 Super. W/ CMores. Mags etc. Low $$$$ Pm me if you want EAA. Also have a Pre Para. nicer STI. All are 38 Super. W/ CMores. Mags etc. Low $$$$
  7. Been a happy camper with the 9mm change over. I use only SV mags.... That said I bought a couple of the STI kits with the spacer and different follower as I also had some STI mags. I called STI and asked if they made the kits for the 170mm mags and was supprized.... I was told I DIDN'T need the kits????? Go figure...SO why do they sell them???? I have found that I can run up to a 1.200 OAL if I use Mont. Gold 124 R. Nose, and the EGW "U" die. (I usually shorten this up a bit BUT I've not had any problems). I would recomend these bullets... I've not found any other brand that I can run this long without chamber/bullet interferance. (I just picked up some Armscor 124 R Nose, they look like they will be fine also) The gun I have digests just about anything and I only change the recoil spring when shooting 140 PF steel loads. I always come home with more brass than I've shot....kind of nice! I did have 2 case seperations with IMR 7625 loaded to 171/173 PF and have stopped loading that to major. My 02.
  8. Anyone used Win. 571 powder in .38 Super??? I've always been curious, as this powder is listed in the VV burning rate chart as to being similar to SP2 which seems to be unavailible/liked by shooters who have used SP2?..... I won't even go to the same powder to be used in 9mm major as I would guess it to be to dense? Anyone familar with 571??
  9. One other problem I had ... one you wouldn't think of??.. My grip was loose!!! (actually cracked from old age/chemical abuse??).... just a little movement here and the hammer falls to 1/2 cock. Worked good sometime and then..... Took a while to find this!! try flexing the barrel/grip... any movement? Could be your problem?
  10. Thanks.... 2 Blade-Techs ordered.
  11. Someone is making a 4 mag holder (kydex). I've searched several sights... can't find. Can you help?
  12. BUY the EGW undersized dies, for what ever caliber you choose...I have them for all calibers... can't think of ANYTHING that has made life more enjoyible. USE a SLOWER powder if you choose 9mm major. Have FUN!!! (I'm a "SUPER SENIOR", working with a friend on the 1.5 trigger for the XD-40 that's coming next week)... Probably the MOST important thing to remember is............YOU can't have to many guns!!
  13. ++ for the accu-rail.... My open sti is over 10 years old W/ 1000's of rounds fired. sent it back to Doug for a new set of rails and it's like new again.... Well worth the money, especially if you keep things for a long time.... Was going to send the wife in but the freight was too much???
  14. Ha, Ha, Love IT!!!!!, ....Dad.... (9mm Major is like kissing your first girl, YOU want too... but you don't know EXZZACL...WHY???????) Kick BUTTT! THE only reason you will go blind is IF, you fear stuff???.( I can get AT LEAST 3 pops from once fired brass, loaded to 170+ PF's). Just be reasionible... enjoy 9mm, .... it"s safe, if your not STUPID
  15. 9mm major....Another $.02 opinion.... Shot .38 Super/Super Comp. for a number of years (14+).... Switched to 9mm major. You have gotten LOTS of advise But the Best so far was let your son START with the 9mm MINOR loads. I always come home with lots more once fired brass than I started with... LOTS of the slower powders work fine , buy the "long" firing pin, SV mags and enjoy.... DIFFINATLY stay away from "fast" powders (I've had a case seperation with IMR 7625). I've still got my old P-9 guns from years ago and used them to work up major loads.... you might consider a Re-Coil master or Sprinco type guide rod.... will save some wear and tear on the gun. I don't think your fears are warranted? BUT too each their own???? If it were my son, He would be shooting 9mm of some sort, especially if you have some "steel" matchs in your area, can't beat 9mm for steel.
  16. C-More batteries..... Another source.. E-Bay, go under "dog collars, batteries" good vendor, fully charged, quick service, cheaper if you buy more (less than $1.50 ea.). mikeNM
  17. We have a fellow shooter with the same/gun/problem....(SWC)he has narrowed the problem down to the recoil spring being too strong... he says that Wolfe is making springs soon. Because of the design....(captured spring) it's not like/easy too change. I like the one round/slide lock thought. This might be difficult? got any friends w/ a .40 cal gun? (probably lighter recoil assembly?).
  18. Try "Nowlin", their's is designed for .355 bore. (So the pilot fits in the bore). I've had one for eons.
  19. FYI, While this may not be the answer you are seeking????, The EGW "U" (LEE) die has eliminated any 9mm re-loading problems I've had. I can also get a minimum of 3 loadings(172 PF) from once fired ANY headstamp brass before I toss it. I can load 9mm MGold 124 FMJ out to 1.200 with NO loose bullets. I've loaded 000's & 000's of rounds, no problems EXCEPT 1 Berdan primed case which broke the "pin". I use the "U" die for 9mm,38SC, 40 S&W and 45 cal. (I do slightly lube all cases in all calibers). I have had the primer not completly be removed ONLY on S & B brass w/the "red" stuff on the primer. They work for me.
  20. Thought about that too... I've rotated the bore sighter.... in the barrel and got very very close to the same dot locations....(no mill or lathe)... I have the adjustible end (plastic nub) fairly snug... and this is about as good as one could expect from the tool??? I'm happy and feel this was a GOOD investment!
  21. I'm sure you will get LOT's of advice on this one..... I NEVER use the barrel a a guage.... BUY a Dillon or other case guage and use it RELIGIOUSLY. (LOVE the EGW "u" carbide die. Few if any, loaded rounds fail to guage). You need to be aware of the amount of "freebore" in your barrel(I can load out to 1.200 OAL with Mont. Gold FMJ's, STI barrel and not have land/bullet nose contact). You MUST have a few .000 freebore or you WILL risk very high/explosive conditions..... So far , I have found that the length of the "mag" seems to be the limiting factor in 9mm OAL, that is, some guns need a smaller OAL so that the round will fit the mag.... on STI/SV mags the SHORTEST FMJHP I run is 1.165 OAL...
  22. XRe: Shot Sat. match.... the bore sighter saved lots of "sight-in" ammo. at 20 yards up & down were fine... gun shot " left... only had to adjust horizontal plane..slightly, 5/6 rounds and all was well. I think this is a good tool for the price! A HA HA? (makes you aware of the parallex) ... something else for the "mind" to overcome??? Shooting 9mm major.... happy with this "move" also. (thanks, Jon Merricks) mikeNM
  23. Yep... check the "comp". Had a 7 port comp on a 38 Super. Was leaving very slight copper marks on the last port on the comp. .. Good place to start looking(I used red dykem & cleaned the comp w/bore brush so I could see the marks clearly), then reamed out the area.
  24. Thought I'd pass on some info.... Just bought a bore sighter..... I have 4 handguns with C-Mores on them. I live a long way from the range and thought the "LazerLyte" would save both time and ammo for getting a close sight in? Have to say I'm happy with the product....(You can even SEE the "parallex" at different distances, a FIRST for me). BUT I did find another interesting thing out....When you tighten the "C-More" set screws, they change your just perfectly?? sighted in pistol's "point of aim"... In other words "It ain't gong to shoot where you think it was" before you tightened those set screws!! I'm sure the bore sighter will get you VERY close to your point of aim. I would have prefered the "hard case" to protect the bore sighter but the whole thing fit into a "old" Caspian barrel plastic case I had, so there is some protection now when I carry it in my range bag. Happy camper.
  25. I'd have to chime in... the long firing pin, seems to be the "majic" helper in 9mm major? For what it's worth.... I've found as have others that IMR # 7625 works well. I do load it on my 550 instead of my 650 as it is a compressed load. I was keeping track of the # of reloads (WSR primers, various powders)) possible and 3 x's seems to be the max BEFORE I got some loose primers. (reminds me of the "old" P-9 days and 9 x 21 brass). kind of interesting.... I always come home with more 9mm brass than I left with????, can't say that about 38 Super.
