  1. looks like you could get 29g into a case at the top of the shoulder, bottom of the neck, which would be compressed with a 75g, which i'm guessing would get it to about 2500fps, give or take. IMO, not worth it, and i'm not going to even pursue this anymore, at least in 223. may play around with it in .308 later on a 110vmax, see if i can gain anything over the 49g WIN 748 3180fps load i'm using now. but thats another story for another time. g'nite folks.
  2. i've still got a SX2 practical from 4 years ago, still runs great, light recoil, great sights. just cut off the cantilever rail and hog out the load area. seems to want to digest anything and everything, not particular about shells like my Benelli is. runs crappy crimped loads and shoots Fiocchi slugs like a champ.
  3. if you're of mind to, and if you're reloading, you might try playing around with lighter bullets. lotta guys are running the 135smk. i'm doing 3180fps out of my 20" with hornady vmax 110g and 49g of 748 (can you say flat?), and IIRC from a discussion with John Paul he's using the same 110vmax and getting high 2900's out of an 18", but with a different powder, I wanna say 335?
  4. update: (and sorry i took soo long to do it) built me a ladder test on 69g smk's, winchester brass, winchester primers. rifle is a Firebird 18" 1:8". 100yd distance. started at 24.0g and went to 26.0g in 0.5g increments. thought surely i wont even get to the 26g load, as my current load is 25.0g of RL15 and this hornady stuff is hottt. wrong. oh so wrong. testing was in a nice afternoon, about 65 deg, less than 5mph crosswind, 60% humidity, roughly 50' ASL, and over an Oehler chrono. 24.0g Hornady Superformance: 1889fps average of 5 shots, sd of 41 wow, didn't expect that. hmmm. so lets skip all the way to 26.0g cuz i think i see where this is going. i'll just go pull the bullets and save them and the powder. soooo,: 26.0g Hornady Superformance: 2165fps average of 5 shots, sd of 21 (maybe my barrel was warmer, mitigated the sd...?) i should also say that i loaded all this on a 550, and taking into account the sd i see here i bought a rcbs competition die set for my single stage where i will meter out every charge to the tenth grain and carefully load one at a time to try to remove the human (read: Ken) error from the next test. so i'm back on the load bench this afternoon, pulling all the test rounds. jokingly, i guess i'll just fill the case to the bottom of the neck and see what i can get in there and make a SWAG on a starting point for test #2. as an aside, i also tested some factory ammo. hornady superformance match 75g, 2704fps, es 19, sd 12. nickel size group at 100yds. hmmm, daddy likes. wolf gold match 75g, 2546fps, es 31, sd 14. again, great group, but not quite what the hornady was and slow compared to the Hornady. asym tac match grade, 77g bthp, 2574fps, es 96, sd 30. liked the wolf better. little more accurate too. MORE TO FOLLOW.
  5. bought it yesterday, watched it in the truck. its ok...
  6. probably the true power on either end, like not a true 1x on the bottom and not quite 7x on the top.
  7. all right smartass. it dont got no dang lil marks in da cross thingie in the middle so i knows wheres my bullet is gonna hit other than where i done zeroed it at
  8. last year we got some good updates on new products seen at shot. this year, NOTHING!!! come on y'all, hook us up!!!
  9. well, ive figured out it aint me, its the scope. i thought i wasnt seeing the dot too well anymore, possibly my failing eyesight, but during fire the other day i noticed the dot suddenly doubling in brightness... and then going immediately back to "half". time to call aimpoint and get a r.a. thanks guys
  10. +1. i've got a a pelican 1750 and voodoo tactical 46" bag, holds 18" tacopt rifle, 24" benelli, 6" STI, and all the mags. If i had it to do over again, i'd choose a STARLIGHT case instead.
  11. i think its subjective also, but having shot a M1 without and my M2 with comfort tech stock side by side, same ammo (rem sure shot heavy dove 1255fps #7.5), IMO the comfort tech does add a measure of recoil reduction. i dont regret the purchase.
  12. I like the features, like the price (relative to others), and the fire dot is daytime visible. only drawback is the current reticles available. IMO they leave a little to be desired with regards to ranging.
  13. son of a bitch.. thats some crash, injuries, luck, and best of all, recovery. im 38 now, been riding on the street since i was 17, had my share of spills, but NEVER anything even remotely like that. damn, just gives me shivers. but today, im kinda like the other guy who gave up bikes for something safer: running around as fast as i can with a loaded hair trigger gun. best of luck (you may have used up more than your share already) to you, friend.
  14. Academy range bag, its kinda mid sized. lotsa zippered pockets lets you separate your items and has a pull out stage kit. long guns are in a VooDoo tactical 48" double rifle case. one big out side pocket thats about half the size of the main compartment, and 3 more smaller pockets. backpack straps and a shoulder strap.
  15. several emails to Polle, nothing yet. grrr, since I'm traveling with someone whos already got his confirmation
  16. Benny Hill of Triangle Shooting Sports and Mike Cyrwus of Accurate Iron are HIGHLY reccomended as well as respected Benelli smiths, as well as sponsors and ambassadors of our sports. Benny did my M2 (and both 5" and 6" lim handguns) and Mike has done several M&P's for me, and I've had exactly ZERO complaints with the work done by either. I live about and hour from Briley, and while I do a TON of business with them thru the gun club I manage, I send my competition guns to these two gentlemen.
  17. I seem to remember seeing a machined knurled extension for Aimpoint red dots a few years ago that allowed you to run two batterys in series, allowing either extended life or a brighter dot, i dont remember which. but.. now the only thing i find, at brownells, is a unit that just carries/stores another battery in the cap. any suggestions?
  18. damn good book. the spousal unit got it for me right before my last out of town road trip, i ate it up in just a few nights. good read, very entertaining. kinda reminds me of peter hathaway capstick in his "well this is what happened and this is how i fell on my ass as i did it but it worked out anyway" style.
  19. i'll be using this one at out next (first Sat Feb '12) match. thanx!
  20. in Texas make it the sound of an 870 racking another shell in...
  21. http://unknowntarget.com/index.htm these guys. but it doesnt show on their page. i'd try contacting them.
  22. bought a POF 25 rd for just that, and it failed on me in a DPMS. i'm using Flatland Forge's PMAG extensions on my 308, both the +5 extension and the plain extension. works awesome. (and you can get him to tell the cannon story if you buy it in person)
  23. Pulled it (listened to the advice on the heat, really took it to heart), had my rifle smith turn it down to 0.750" end to end and reinstalled. with 77g PVRI, which was the only 77g factory load I had on hand, and i'm happy to say it has retained its accuracy. after all that was said here i wasnt real worried about it, but you just never know.
