  1. old thread. this is an excelent cartridge and has survived many of the other cartridges mentioned. recently offered om ruger model 77 mk II, remington 700, win 70 and in CZ. I have a match cg-63 based on the model 96 swedish mouser.
  2. These featherlight loads see most use in cowboy action shooting where the targets are stationary and most shotguns are approaching 100 years of age. The chronograph data was not originally published and I tried them as a load to be used for the boy scout shotgun merit badge. It was immediately apparent that they did not come close to 1200 fps target or light game load and will cause the shooter to develop timing for a 900 fps load that will will really hamper migrating to a target or hunting load. I suggest you go with the other light loads that have a 7/8 oz load but 1200 fps.I am using that for both target loads and cowboy shooting. and can still shoot target or sporting clays loads with trap or sporting clays without getting confused. I realize this is an old thread.
  3. Suggest you might switch to an adapter for your caliper that measures off the ogive. Sinclair precision sells three different dillon one, midway. costs less than $10,. The first rounds on a progressive press may vary as the shell plate loads up with a cartridge in each slot. Pursuing it further you can get hellicoils from uniqietek.com to remove tool head wobble even further
  4. Attach bench to back of wall. You ammo will be more accurate the powder measure will through more uniform and the dillon will work flawless.
  5. The first die you scratch from a grain of sand glued by mud to a case and have to replace will have paid for a small tumbler from midway.......
  6. Any of the moly suggested, I loaded over 10K bear creek and tried the others. Just one suggestion if new brass chamfer the case mouth on first loading so sharp square edge does not shave off coating. You will appreachat the coating if shoot indoors and don't get lead smoke and soon it may be reuired by most ranges
  7. No one has mentioned a sig 225 or 239. sig double action is a very smooth and you should feel the trigger pull and rate others to it. The fit is good for a small hAND out of the box and an even shorter trigger is availible. Ive carried one for 15 years and have used the other ones mentioned. You should a least try one.
  8. the roller handle seemed to make my carpel tunnel worst or fact I went from several hundred to 4-5000 rounds a month. either way, surgery is in july for left hand august for right and i can only operate on 22 cal slides and resorted to wheel guns and 38spcl but planning on reloading during those months
  9. It might be handy in future if you happen accross an urban battle field and you can not get processed brass. RCBS also has a swaging die for primer pockets. I put the universal depriming die and the rcbs primer pocket swager in a turret die. The deprimer gets used alot the pocket swager die hasn't been used yet. The Dillon 600 has been packed in cosmoline for future use.

  11. You may want to chamfer new brass particular if shooting lead
  12. used a ring indexer spring from spare parts kit. The new mod from dillon requires(needs hysterisis or full motion of the priming handle forward and back so it becomes fore difficult to double charge. the spring makes the bar follow the powder measurpowder measure pushing up and moving the powder bar, the motion is more positive, keeping the dillon mod still requires that you have to have movement of handle fully towars you trhen away on the priming stroke. I like the extra safety of the hysterisis failsafe stroke the spring takes away the clunkyness.
  13. These are molded in a gang in an injection mold. My original was trimmed and left a ridge that the rod and my handling of the arm caused me to hesitate a little, smothing that trimmed area made for better motion, so did loading several more thousand rounds and improved muscle memory on my part
  14. I develloped a bad habit of hesitation on my 550 that tollerated it the 650 does not tolerate hesitation on the operating handle. one I cured that hesitation it hardly ever fails to index the primer disk fully and has not broken another indexing ring. you may still have othewr problems as posted
  15. If you plan on having several caliber conversions an d need a justification for casefeeder then getting a micrometer from uniquetek can allow you to skip the extra powder measures at $70 a pop and now you have the money saved for casefeeder that much faster. not necessary but a sure pleasure
  16. 1 sw 41 its still the best 2 ruger mk ii or iii, with a 22/45 you have no options on alternate grips 3 marvel conversions, accuracy beats a ceiner
  17. correct me if i am wrong but they are coated with teflon black or clear.
  18. I know as parents we tend to want to expose our kids to things we enjoy. I and several other instructors do not give instruction to kids under 16 because of fear that the bones or rather the growth plates in kids hands can be injured causing growth to stop or be stunted. Do a google search on this. If one of the many bones is injured it may prevent full use just waiting a few more years would ensure normal hands. There are other shooting sports to master. Heavy recoil is not the only culprit. The weight of the gun and how the grip of the hand alone is enough.
  19. I can only speak for the 650 but even without doing a cartrige conversion the preventive maintance tasks of removing shell plate primer assembly and punch, case feeder and cleaning debris of cleaning media, spilled powder, spend and live primers off of ski ramp far exceed changing small and large primers. I had a small and large primer 550 as said before the enjoyment of the automation production speed of the 650 and the simplicity of the 550 both are both appreciated. You won't miss the second 550 have you thought of adding case feeder to one 550 and keeping the other for rifle and pistol. there is a video on the forum of it loading.
  20. take a look at forester/bonanza coax single stage press. It does not need seperate shell holders. The dies snap in place and the die rings once adjusted stay adjusted on each die just like hormady lock and load do. The Army amu team uses it. and when you want to load on dillon you can get a conversion. I have owned one for 10 years and a dillon since 1982. the coax press goes to range with me for load development and it does have the problem of asingle stage of having to adjust the dies once set. remember you can use the dillon powder measure on a single stage press.
  21. straightshooter1, I talked to lee at dillon when I ordered the 650 and he said that alot hold on to the 550 if they are loading qa lot of different calibers and glad i did too. I have about a dozen orphans i load maybe a hundred cartridges and thats good for months or half a year and since i own most of the shell plates and funnels it would not make sense to 650 those. I find that if i hand prime and using the micometer modified powder bars using different powders and doing load development the 550 is a very handy press and I can still produce a 1000 rounds in two hours if i want to. If you have the room for both 550/650 on your bench you should keep it, any money you get from the 550 sale would be spent on 650 conversions my 2 cents. I find with the micrometer bars i am not using the extra powder measures and have sold two down to tree total one with large bar one with small and one i keep on 650. by the waqy i had two 550 at one time and found i did not need two. Its easy to get in a dillon fever and have conversions for every caliber, I like the expression of respect the man that owns one gun because he knows how to use it. It applies to reloading presses also
  22. Well a two month update I added the 650 to my bench 4 months ago with the 550, the forester coax press and I have a good mix. The 650 is set up for my main match pistol(38), the 550 does rifle and pistol, and the forester does my precision 6.5x55,308, and 223. I relealize now that I had some acquire habits on 550 that the 550 was so tolerante and simple that made it more reliable. I have quickly discovered those reloading faults like hesitation on down or up stoke that messes up primer indexing and the reloading bench needed to be more solid so powder and primers will not shake around. primers, shells and powder. let me emphasize again your loading bench needs to be heavier or brackets or 2x4 screwed to wall to avoid problems in the 650 that you got by in the 550. I had a 450/550 since 82 and I will keep one. I have added two more 650 conversion kits(45,40) but have rethought it to still do main match 3000/month on 650 and do 300-700 on others on 550. I have added uniquetek's micrometer to a small and large powder bar . I shear extrudded powders on a redding br3 measure with and without a rcbs case activated linkage using dillon powder funnels and dillon powder dies. nEW ACUIRED muscle memory has replaced some older 550 and the 650 runs smoth now and I anticipate what is going wrong before the 650 stops. I appreciate both machines the 550 for all the calibers and simplicity and the 650 for its automation but it really boils down to the reloader behind the handle and their perseverance to learn the machine be patient if you do upgrate or adopt another dillon
  23. Use a piece of dental floss, you all floss don't you. hook one end on pin pull the other end around on the groove on main shaft. This hint is in written instructions with replacement indexer or alighnment tool that is also needed.
  24. The carbide dies last longer, it was not that many a years ago that carbide dies where very expensive and comercial loaders used them.
  25. This bullet is heavily used by cowboy action shooting SASS, I have used the 158 grain lrnfp with titegroup and and trailboss there is alot of info/ history when loaded 45 colt or 45 schofield. Have not seen much on 45acp. clays with this bullet also used alot. you might see what has been said on www.sassnet.com All load data has been cleaned from that site. I have been cleaning barrels for two years and use kroil. Since it is 100% coated little no leading and lead smoke not there up to 1400 fps. have wondered about 45acp.
