  1. +1. Love it when the SEC part of the season is underway.
  2. Sean, I know you have a relationship with Briley but I stand by my comments. I merely reported the facts about my experience both good and bad. I do not feel like I was "bad mouthing" them. I specifically never said Briley "doesn't know anything about performance shotguns". I did opine that I did not believe the 'smiths there were active 3 gun shooters. I say this because they did not really understand the nuiances of 3 gun. Specifically in my case they did not grasp the need to do speed reloads from bolt lock back. They thought so long as the gun fed from the tube, all was well. In fact, my gun was an out of battery detonation waiting to happen. I believe Briley makes some very high quality parts and they probably have no equals serving the clay shooting sports. However, I do believe there are better choices out there for 3 gun work. This may change as they gain experience and I wish them well in the endevor. So far as their work for the military, that is great. However, I would have serious reservations about a soldier carrying my SLP into battle as Briley handed it back to me (twice).
  3. I have been involved with Briley over the past few months getting most of their "3 gun package" work done to my FN SLP. I have mixed reviews. First, the work took about twice as long as originally quoted. Second, while I think the Briley people know their shotguns and make great quality parts, they do not seem to really grasp 3 gun. I seriously doubt anyone there is actively involved in our sport. I ended up with serious FTF issues. The gun went back for a second visit to their shop with no better results. They did not pay any attention to my input regarding the problem. I finally had to get out the Dremel and fix the FTF issue myself. ( I have a thread in the shotgun forum here that was started in November) Mind you, this was after paying Briley almost $700 to get the job done. To their credit, the work they did opening up the loading area, installing after market parts and the action work were fine. They also took care of me on some extra chokes to make up for the hassles and length of time involved in the work. For what it is worth, I have been involved in the action shooting sports since the 80s and have had lots of custom gun work done over the years. This is only the second time I have ever had to take a gun back for additional work. At this point I am not sure I would use them again.
  4. I have lead levels checked at least once a year. I have always checked out OK. I reload and shhot quite a bit as most here do. However, I avoid indoor ranges at all costs. I also wash my hands regularly and thoroughly when I finish a reloading session. I had a big bottle of lotion sold at one time in the medical field that was supposed to put a barrier on your hands against chemical absorbsion. Ran out a while back. Wish I could find it again. I also wear vinyl gloves when cleaning guns and when I handle tumbling media.
  5. Couple I have heard that are similar: "Too much standing around between shooting......causes me to cool down." "Less than 5 minutes total shooting time while spending 6-8 hours on the range."
  6. Springer precision has the BT DOH in stock for the 5.25. I have one on the way.
  7. SLP ran great in the match this weekend. Over the courses I fired six slugs (all mixed brands and weights) and about 50 rounds of shot (again all mixed brands and shot charges). Not FTF or any other problems at all. Pictures as requested. For Dremel session #3, this area between scissors blades was where I concentrated on grinding and polishing. Finished product Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and input! Rick
  8. To those wanting pictures, I will tear it down for cleaning after the match and get some pictures up soon.
  9. Range trip went very well today. I tried everything I could think of and could not make it hiccup. I took Remington heavy dove loads, AA "silver bullets", some crap Tula 1 oz loads and it ate everything. I even mixed all those rounds up in the tube a few times and ran it as fast as I could go on the plate rack. Nary a problem. I am probably tempting the gremlins at the match tomorrow by bragging, but I am anxious to see how she runs under those conditions. So far, so good.
  10. Ben Diss, I really do not understand the question. Give me some details and I will do my best to comply.
  11. Just saw where my check cleared. Looks like I am in again this year!
  12. Well, I think I fixed it. I went at it again with the Dremel. This time I added a flex shaft attachment to the Dremel and used a larger diameter grinding stone. The thin "head" on the flex shaft allowed me to hit the area from 12 o'clock back to 8 o'clock (facing the chamber mouth) a lot better. This is where the "blade" extension on the back of the barrel kept me from hitting very well as the diameter of the standard Dremel tool body was too large. I had also determined this was where the front of the round was impacting on the jams. I also decided to get more agressive with the stone. I figured if I damaged the barrel, so be it. Replacing a barrel after already investing $1600 in this project was not that big a big deal. Anyway, it is now feeding 100% with my dummy rounds. I can't make it jam no matter the angle with muzzle up, down or level. Tomorrow is going to be a practice day at the range with our monthly 3 gun match at the Impact Zone Saturday. I will be back with range reports.
  13. I just got one in from Dawson last week. I sprang for the SA Custom shop action job. I can't wait to get it to the range! Blade Tech said two months before production is scheduled on a DOH for it though.
  14. Been at the chamber mouth twice now with the dremel. Cranked it down to slow speed and used a fine stone first followed by a fine grit sanding wheel and a lot of polishing afterward. This took all the rough edges down nicely but unfortunately did not help the feed problem a bit.
  15. Will try to continue unscientific approach once swelling subsides.
  16. Well.......In a totally unscientific approach. I decided to try 100 empty chamber reloads with the Nordic oversized button removed vs. Nordic button installed. In the first 100 reloads without the button, I had 5 failure to feeds. In the second session with the button reinstalled, I got through the first 25 loads with 3 FTF, then the SLP decided to eat my thumb.
  17. Extractor is butted up against the base of the round and is cocked out a bit. This is another cell phone pic. Quality could be a lot better.
  18. Appreciate the suggestions. I am goint to try the champfer on the chamber mouth first as I notice the lip is somewhat rough and quite a bit more pronounced than on my 1100. Cell phone pic below. My gut tells me the problem lies there. I will also remove the Nordic button and play around with that a bit too. Will report back with results over the holiday weekend. Thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving! Rick
  19. Been shooting an 1100 in 3 gun for the past year and a half with few problems until just recently. So I decided to upgrade to an SLP rather than dump more $ into the 1100. I took the SLP (NIB) to Briley for one of their three gun packages. ( Weld lifter, action job etc.....) Got it back and it was a jam-o-matic. Read several of the "SLP jamming" threads here then took the gun back to Briley. They reworked the lifter but did not radius the chamber mouth as I requested. Now the gun functions fine from the magazine tube but I am getting roughly 1 in 10 jams when loading into an empty chamber. (See picture below) I have tried a couple different variations on my loading technique.....mainly dropping the shell on top of the lifter and/or twisting the receiver to different angles on the load all to no avail. To be 100% reliable I need to stick the shell into the chamber which drastically slows down the load. Is this situation mechanical or do I need to tweak my loading technique?
  20. I spoke to BT yesterday. The lady said it would be about two months before the Black Ice would be available for the 5.25. I just picked up a 5.25 in 9mm for three gun yesterday. Bought through Dawson with the optional SA custom shop action job. Very pleased with the guns feel and trigger, hope to get it to the range sometime this week. I plan to muddle through with the factory holster until the Black Ice is ready to go.
  21. While the new FN is still hung up at Briley getting the gremlins worked out,(see my other thread) I am back to using my old faithful 1100 for three gun. This weekend it let me down a bit in a match for the first time. The bolt stopped locking back on an empty chamber. Any ideas on what would cause this malfunction? Other than having a Dave's aftermarket lifter, it is pretty much box stock.
  22. Well, I got it back from Briley about two weeks ago. Work looks nice and clean....trigger and action smoothed out well. However, I started practicing some loading drills with dummy rounds and noticed I was getting some jams on a frequent basis. I was getting two different failure to feeds on a consistent basis. The first seems to have the shell contacting the front edge of the chamber. I noticed this edge is much more pronounced than on my 1100. The second jam has the shell entering the chamber about 3/4 way and then getting hung up on the lifter. On my first range trip with live ammo the same jams occured evety 4-5 rounds. I was shooting Remington full house slugs and AA 1 1/8 oz "silver bullet" rounds. The shotgun is now back at Briley. I want the chamber mouth chamfered to address the first situation. I have no idea what is up with the lifter.
  23. I drilled a hole through each case about midway and then deburred the hole. Left spent primers in place. No way you can confuse them for loaded ammo.
