  1. Wow,

Talk about timing. I've been sweatin' this topic for a while now. I just got back into shooting a couple of years ago after taking about 8 years off. Luckily I already had my Dillon 550 press and all the other reloading gear. I recently added an SVI pistol which was a major expense for me, then you need mags, holster and other gear. Add in a timer and chrono. There's always something you need... For a while I toyed with upgrading to a 650 or even a 1050 press but I just can't swing the additional cost. I don't shoot any major matches. Those expenses just don't figure in. I am lucky in that I get to shoot a local match every weekend. Two USPSA, and 2 Pin or steel matches per month keeps me well rounded. I've been burning up the ammo too. It seems over the last few months I've been shooting about 1000 rounds a month almost exclusively in matches. Not getting any real time to practice. I'm sure most of you exceed my round count, but with 2 small kids I can tell you these expenses certainly cut into the budget. I had never really done the math because I knew it would be scary. The only way to save money is to spend more. Got to buy bullets and stuff in large quantities which could almost equal a gun purchase. USPSA tends to cost me a good deal more than the pin & plate matches. If I ever have to give one up it would be USPSA as I tend to enjoy pin shooting a bit more. Hopefully I won't ever have to make that decision. Especially since I've just invested in all my equipment. I am very lucky to have an understanding wife who knows how much I enjoy shooting. She actually shuffles the budget around and goes without stuff she wants so that I can support my hobby. Gotta remember not to take her for granted...

  2. The Mass. Rifle Club which I think is in Woburn still shoots pins. See www.massrifle.com

Great bunch of guys and no slouches in clearing the pin tables.

Thanks. I haven't made it up to Mass Rifle yet. I'll have to put it on my list.

  3. Before they do Gary, let me add my disgust with keyboard conmmandos. I try to temper what I type by a simple test -- Would I say this same thing in-person?

    If not, don't hit Send.

+1 to that. I apply that to email and phone conversations.

    Gary,

Did one of our local MDs just lose his Dad? Sorry to hear that.

  4. Reloading info available online from both Hodgden, and Alliant show 1000fps loads.

Hmmm. Why weren't these in either of my loading manuals???

Thanks for the info Wide45. Looks like Blue Dot and Power Pistol powders will do it from Alliant and Longshot from Hodgdon. I've never heard of any of them except for the Power Pistol.

Anyone got and positive feedback on any of the three above? Or maybe I should just stick with the trusted and familiar Bullseye and top off at around 960fps.

  5. Cuz, although our club doesn't have a forum like this you can see the latest happenings at the Mid-West Pinblasters web site. Some photos, some videos and information on our club.

    Joe W.

    Joe,

I had already checked it out when you referenced it in an earlier post. Very nice, that's what got me started on looking for other related sites. Nice pics too. Looks like a great place to shoot pins, but a little bit of a drive for me up here in MA.

    Thanks for the info.

  6. I'm using a copper coated 200gr flat point bullet. Can anyone provide a powder recommendation to get me safely up to the 1000 fps range? My load books all seem to top out at around 950. I was using Bullseye and WST for my .45 loads but I am willing to switch if necessary. I'm shooting a Colt Gold Cup with 5" barrel and a 625 Revo with 5.5" barrel.

If possible I'd like the same powder to work well down to ICORE power factors so I will only have one powder for .45acp that will go from ICORE to Plates to Pins, all with the same bullet.

    Thanks,

    -Cuz.

  7. Ahhh....pin guns! Now you're talking my language. This IPSC stuff is just something to do for awhile until pin-shooting makes a comeback! :)

    Mike

    Mike,

Is there any website you are aware of similar to this one that has info and tips on pin shooting?

  8. You'll have to excuse the paper sticking out of the hammer on the 686, I'm sending some guns off to Apex next week and needed a way to mark them.

That pic would make a decent wall poster in my loading room! Nice revo's. I'm sort of partial to the nice simple revolver. Still working on my collection at a somewhat slower rate then you.

  9. Can you safely do a 200+ pf load in a .40 limited gun with 180gr JHP? All the reading I've done here seemed to imply it was barely safe to make Major loading the .40 cal.

  10. I've got an older P16.40 Limited with the LDA trigger. While the gun is 100% reliable with any ammo I fed it I would not recommend the LDA trigger type for USPSA. I shot it for a year and then ordered an SVI. The Para is now my backup gun that I bring to matches.

  11. Very nice looking roundgun. What is it's primary function?

    -Cuz

I had this done for a daily carry piece.

Cool. Boy, that is one very nice looking revo. I bet it'll be just as sweet to shoot. The only depressing thought is that if it's a carry piece you may not actually shoot it as much as your competition/range guns. Good luck with it.

  12. i just bought 2k 9mm 124 grain double struck round nose bullets for plinking in the 9mm. well plinking in the Major 9mm.

7.6 grains HS6, Fed 200 primer, winchester brass and berrys 124 DSRN bullet go into a little over 2 inches at 25 yards. 50 yard head shots are still possible with this bullet/load

BTW it chronos at 1365 fps so i believe the 1000 fps max that some folks claim is crap. i will also note that i used NO crimp, the belled case mouth had just been turned back around.

for almost all pistol shooting, i have no issues with berrys bullets.

That's what I like to hear. I just bought 9,000 of them in 40 and 45. Looking forward to shooting them and saving a few bucks at the same time.

  13. I'm not partial to anything with a built-in rechargeable battery. They tend to only take a recharge a fixed # of times and then need to be replaced at a pretty considerable expense. I'll keep my CED 8000 and be happy Alkaline batteries are cheap enough when purchased in quantity at the local Sam's Club. I've got an Ipod mini that needs it's internal battery replaced. Going to cost about half as much as the damn thing costs to buy new just for a battery. Never again...

  14. Both is a good answer, let it be determined by the match and if you don't like the format don't go. Is this game a hobby or a semi-professional sport?

I suck, so raffles are better odds for me. The guys who take this seriously usually want to be rewarded for it. There is no way to make both sides happy. The closest is that the top shooter usually sell the prize guns below market prices. That's why I will be bringing cash to the IRC :)

    Jason

I think I'm with you Jason. Bring cash and hope to score a good deal from one of the "other" winners.

  15. Just curious. Why would you have even opened that email up to read it? That should have been deleted unread to prevent any possible compromise.

    -Cuz.

Because I actually do have an American Express account and I could not be sure from the title that it was fake.

I guess that would be a good reason. Damn those pesky bastards are good. They actually pretend to be from institutions where people have legitimate (sp?) accounts. No wonder they're so successful. :)

  16. CactusTactical,

I've only had the pleasure of doing business with you on one occasion and I must say I was rather impressed with how quickly you turned around my order and got the products to me. Keep up the good work and forget about that lunkhead. Let him go to one of his local gunshops where many owners act the same way. they will be good for each other.

  17. Shot the PSA Shootout in steady rain yesterday --- twice. Thanks to the canopies, it was manageable.

On target taping, Larry Houck introduced me to the best bags at last year's Summer Blast: Shredder bags, available at any satationary store. They're just the right size for targets.....

We've used Dry Cleaner bags on occasion. Not as heavy duty as shredder bags but much cheaper.
