  1. When I wanted to quit school and become a professional foosball player many years ago I tried to get my parents to sponsor me by telling them I’d wear their last name on the back of my jersey. It didn’t work and I was forced to stay in college and get a degree. In retrospect, I guess they really did know best.

It's been my experience, shooting identical pistols with the exception of slide length (P-10F, P-10C), that shorter slides are easier to control in recoil.

I see no point to a G34 in Carry Optics.  Its longer sight radius is irrelevant and I find the shorter slides to be faster to recover from recoil and less apt to dive when the slide goes into battery.  It's simple physics: the slide is both lighter and has a shorter moment arm from the grip.

I think the grip length will be more important than slide length. Although it may not be much of an issue if you use full size / extended magazines.

  3. I would recommend getting the holster  for the 34 now. It will also work fine for the G19 so you only need to buy it once.  I would also recommend buying full size G17 mags and putting extensions as needed. You will probably only need two to start, and keep the rest of the mags stock with 17 rounds. They will also work fine with the G19. That should save you some money in the long run.

  4. This is a hot topic over on glocktalk with folks who bought Nelson Precision and Voodo Custom aluminum replacement slides that are milled for red dots. They are still working the kinks out of the first run, but as soon as they get them working reliably I will order one for my G44.

I decided to try out the daa xip pouches. We will see how it goes.

I picked up the XI and XIp pouches but haven't really had time to play with them.  They look decent, I'm using them with Glock mags.  I'm curious what you think after you have a chance to play with them.  I was also considering bullets out, but didn't try it yet.

    Area 2, 2014 or 2015... shooting production.

I'm given the make ready, and go through my routine, loading the starting mag I always keep in my pocket. Timer goes off, I start shooting, get to that first reload and there are NO magazines on my belt. As the realization hits, the tension releases, my shoulders drop, I unload, show clear, holster... and you could hear a mouse fart on the range. No one shooting, a whole other squad waiting behind us, it was super quiet... and I hear "that sucks" whispered in the crowd.  It was so bad, I couldn't even be mad.

I can't remember if it was the first stage of the day, but all my loaded mags were still sitting in their pockets in the gun bag. The burnout was really setting in for my shooting.

right or wrong, as an RO at a local match, I just couldn’t issue the start beep to a shooter I knew forgot to put any mags in his belt. That’s probably while I’ll never RO at a Major match.

  7. This pandemic has me trying coated bullets for the first time ever, which taught me how important OAL is with regard to different bullet profiles.  I've loaded 9mm, 124/5gr RN coated bullets shorter than I've ever loaded bullets before.  Now I just lucked into some Bayou Bullets and I see they have a crimp groove.  Never loaded those before, but it seems obvious that you would be taper crimping on the top band of the bullet.  That band measures 0.090".

So, does that mean I have to pick an OAL that falls within that band?  Probably not at the very top or bottom, so am I right in assuming my OAL "range" for this particular bullet would be within 0.080" ?

I think I'm correct, but just looking for verification from those who've loaded coated bullets with a lube groove before.  My press isn't currently setup for 9mm yet so I can't plunk test just yet.

    Thanks,

    Cuz

  8. I've been loading on  a 550 for about 25 years.  The first 10 years was just 45acp and 38 special, then I added 40 and 9mm.  Every year for the past 6 or 7 years I've been telling myself I should upgrade, but never considered the 650/750 enough of an upgrade and couldn't really justify the cost of a 1050 because the 550 was more press than I really needed.

I only load pistol ammo, and now 90% of my shooting is 9mm, with a sprinkling of the other 3 calibers.  I don't know how many years I'll be shooting and reloading, but over the past couple of years I switched my way of thinking so that every year I put off upgrading is one less year I'll get to use the new press.  So, in August, I decided I'll get myself a new RL 1100 to load 9mm ammo and keep the 550 for everything else.

But, as to the OPs original question, if I was just starting out today, at my current age and knowing everything that I know, the answer is it depends.  Most likely what I would do is get the RL 1100 setup for 9mm, and just buy ammo for the 100 rounds or so per year that I shoot of those calibers.  And then, if I wanted to expand into other calibers I'd probably look to pick up a 550, because I really like the manual way it operates.

I've used Ghost (both pin and non), CR, Safariland (older models-- 009, 010, 011,...), DAA and Limcat left-handed race holsters over the years.  Of those I liked the CR least.

I hear good things about the latest Safariland and the Everglades but not messed enough with them to know.

    shred,

was it easy to reach and use the locking lever on the CR Speed in left handed configuration?

  10. So what are all you lefty shooters using for holsters with your open guns?  I’ve always used nice sturdy BladeTech kydex holsters, so some of the race holsters don’t give me a warm fuzzy feeling regarding gun retention.

I was considering a CR Speed, but in the left hand configuration the locking lever is on the inside and it seems like it would be too hard to reach.

I stay in hawaii 3-4 months a year and I can only fish/surf/paddle so much. And while I enjoy my peers in the other sports, i like "gun people" more.

I guess I'm about to get much better at mag changes! Good point in verifying mag fit. I'm ordering a bunch of 10 round shadow 2 mags.

I’m about to go from Production to CO So I’m no stranger to frequent mag changes...

Cuz - For me I decided that I had to have a powder check die on every toolhead I own because after having a squib (still not sure how or why but it was from one of my reloads and I do not know if it was a short shot of powder or no powder) I decided I would not load another round without a powder check in place....That was over 10 years ago and I have not had another squib since...I also have not had a powder checker alarm either and I average shooting about 5k-8k reloaded rounds a year through all of my guns.....

No fun beating a projectile out of a SIG pistol barrel but I had to do it......once....

    Peace of Mind for me.....

Roger that. It’s sort of why I verify powder weight in 4-5 out of every 100 rounds I load, even though I’ve never had to adjust the powder drop...
