  1. Tampons, pads and diapers along with vet wrap are going into the kit as soon as I can get to Tractor Supply and the grocery store. During my latest Red Cross class I had an interesting discussion with the trainer who dismissed tampons and pads as effective. Falling back onto my discussions with my first responder folks to customize my kits. Of course at most of the matches I shoot I am much more worried about splinters, scrapes, slide gashes and someone over exerting themselves in the heat. No separate Quick clot agents and no tourniquets as I cannot find any records of one being needed at any of my local matches for the past several years. Guess I also need to add some Hello Kitty band aids for some color for for a bit of color too.
  2. This still happens in other sports, particularly in motor sports, where the item produced for the "company/sponsored team" bears very little resemblance to what is available to the "general public". The other item of the number of production units made begs the question of what does made mean? My personal opinion is that at the very least the number should be units shipped to distributors or sold direct to the public outside of any MIl/Gov/LE/Foreign contracts i.e. units that shipped to the showroom floor as it were. Verification should be available via FFL transfer records and at least at major events there should be some sort of "tech inspection" akin to what is done in motor sports. (Sorry for all the motor sports references but I grew up a 1/2 mile from a NASCAR shop and used to know some of the team guys so I heard a ton about their rules).
  3. I bought a compact Level 2 first responder kit from Galls to have as the "SHTF" bag in my car and a mid sized FAK from Red Cross to have in my range bag. I will augment the RC kit with a few items. As for training I have been through several first aid training sessions starting in boy scouts, adding to it when I got lifeguard certified, added more after my family saw a person die in a bulldozer accident, added some dive related first aid when I was doing some technical diving and finally have picked up some tips from some first responders and medical folks I know. I am current on CPR/AED from AHA and Red Cross (had to have RC cert for work). I know I am far from an expert and that in a life threatening situation the best tool I have is my cell phone but just wanted a little higher level of prep in my own kit.
  4. Does anyone have a good place to get a quality first aid kit or would I be better off building my own? I have the same question out to a couple of EMT buddies now. My needs are for myself and potentially to cover injuries of others I am shooting with. I do have current first aid and CPR training and over the years have received a lot of other first aid type training (dive and sports trauma entry level stuff). I have seen a few threads here and there about this but none really recent. I know the ranges we shoot at have kits but you never know what condition they are in. And yes I know to be much more concerned about wood splinters, skinned elbows/knees and cardio problems than anything gun related. If I buy a kit I would prefer US made from a known good source rather than some of the cheap junk I have seen too much of lately.
  5. Welcome to another big time sink, lol. This forum is a great resource! Like a matt said there is a lot of shooting close to you. Just for USPSA there are monthly outdoor matches in Gainesville and Dawsonville then you have weekly indoor matches near Norcross and another in Cumming. Come on out and shoot if you have not already.
  6. +1 to this. Still pretty new to this but I started improving when I remembered this is all supposed to be fun and the only person I am competing against is myself. I have no aspirations to be a M or GM shooter. I do what I can to support the sport, recently took over a club to keep it going, and just try to make every match fun. Learning as I go and doing the best I can. Right now my focus is shooting clean.
  7. Thanks to all. Doing my best and will see how everything goes. Getting some good support from local folks and had some new shooters come out from a local LE training organization.
  8. Just wanted to add my +1 here. Put in the order this morning and just got the shipping notification! Great job and hope UPS can follow through as well as Shooter's Connection.
  9. I had some issues with them with a Gen 4 SS captured guiderod that broke and getting a refund for it. Took several emails and calls to get it straight.
  10. You do not say major or minor power factor. Assuming you are not reloading and want major PF ammo I suggest Atlanta Arms, DC or Precision Delta. All three are very supporting of the shooting sports, you see major competitors using all 3 brands and from what I have seen all 3 have great quality control and consistency. I have seen some pretty scary stuff from some other ammo makers and even the big commercial boys. I know a guy who has had 2 squibs and 1 shell with no powder from factory new load ammo in the past 2 months. Seems that in the rush to sell ammo some corners might be getting trimmed. Of course right now it comes down to what you can get your hands on.
  11. I regularly shoot with several local LE folks and they are pretty good shooters. I wish there was more general support for LEO shooting teams.
  12. Stray cat got into my mother's Buick fan shroud. Next morning there was a strange sound when the car started up and a very startled cat who definitely used up at least 1 life. It did not happen again.
  13. Several pistol makers (S&W M&P CORE, FN, etc.) are coming out with guns set up for optics out of the factory but not with compensators. I also see more and more folks moving towards a dot sight on their guns for open carry, nightstand, etc. Also given some of the current political junk where a dot sight is OK but a threaded barrel is not this idea makes sense.
  14. This and be sure to take the time to polish it up before you install it. That is critical!
  15. No, This is North Atlanta Action Shooters. Indoor bi-weekly match that I hope we can get back to weekly soon. River Bend was recently taken over by Mike Currier.
  16. Thanks. Trust me this was not part of my "grand plan" but I saw a need and acted on it. To me it comes down to keeping the local clubs running, getting as many shooters (new and old) as we can. We have a lot of people who may have bought guns for the first time and we need to give them a chance to use them and learn in a safe way. Like I said, just trying to do my part. I made a decision to step up and do my part. I hope more do this.
  17. In one month I made the decision to take over a local USPSA club and made C class. I have been shooting USPSA just over a year and working on getting better. I decided to take over the club (GA 022, North Atlanta Action Shooters) to keep it going. RO class in June. I doubt I will ever be a M or GM shooter and I see my place as doing what I can to support the shooting sports as I can. Just trying to do my part! Now to work my way to B!
  18. The Ram 1500 is on the list as a possible replacement for my Explorer. I have been waiting for a good diesel option and nice to see an American company offer one finally! Already signed up for email updates!
  19. If the hammer was in stock I would buy one based on sheer principal. Just needs to be marked "Not for sale in CA, NY, NJ or Chicago". I hate that John is gone. While I felt that much of his stuff was overpriced he did a lot for the shooting sports.
  20. I am late as well but Happy Birthday to a good guy. My first encounter with Chris was having him install a set of Dawson sights on my G35. The first 2 sights had issues with the screws and he kept at it and they have been solid since. CPWSA is my first choice!
  21. When I talked to Donnie last week he would not give me a date. I am guessing 8-10 weeks out. He did mention that he is considering shutting down backorders for a while so they can catch up. Shoot him an email and ask. I have to say that based on him calling me back and the conversation we had if the bullets perform even close to Berry's, Xtreme or others I will be shifting my purchases to Bayou!
  22. Shooting this one next weekend. I am 6'4", right handed, shooting L-10 and the joints are not happy thanks to years of football and wrestling. Any tips on a tall person shooting this one? I already have my knee pads laid out next to my shooting bag.
  23. Looks like it might be a silver Dawson or maybe a SS Zev/Glockworx.
  24. I have to agree with the person who asked what is the main purpose for your Glock. If it has to remain stock and is for other than competition use then stick with the stock standard connector. If you can change connectors and it does not have to be stock Glock, i.e. it is for a game gun, then take a look at Ghost, Glockworx and other aftermarket connectors. They have some different geometry and can help a lot.
  25. Another vote for Dawson. .105 width front here and thousands of rounds with no movement at all. FO or black depends on you and the game you are shooting.
