  1. I use the CMJ (Complete Metal Jacket) because as the name implies it's completely jacketed. The FMJ has exposed lead on the bottom.
  2. Whatever rifle you already own is the ideal rifle for you to start out in 3 gun with. AK, M1A, Kel-Tec...whatever. Just bring it out and give it a try. There's so much else to learn that I don't think any rifle will seriously handicap you for a few matches. And there are classes and matches where the m14 reigns supreme, so I really wouldn't worry about it holding you back.
  3. I've been running a Briley Xtrema 2 in 3 gun for several years now. Runs great, shoots soft, and most importantly hasn't let me down at a match yet. Rounds not getting to the shell catch will go away with practice, if you continue to catch your finger nail you can have the lifter extended slightly, and there is a lot of metal that can be removed from the loading port. Focusing on keeping your thumb straight while loading should also help.
  4. I was kidding, probably. I think we're unlikely to have artillery or CAS. If we do I'm guessing it'll be little birds and the rotary guys are pretty laid back, smoke on target and a frantic radio call should work. Alan
  5. Have you met Greg? I'm planning on hauling a kit bag full of shot, slugs, breachers, and red star clusters around every stage. I have it on good authority that one of the stages will be a call for fire. Start practicing your 9 Lines guys.
  6. There were a few. Depending on how many were around the stats shack while they were asking 4 and 7. It was decided to group them all in Tactical since the prize table was quasi random. I don't think there were any complaints since their chances of winning something cool were much better on the big table. Alan
  7. With a carbine gas system and rifle handguard mine was only easily accessible with a ball end wrench. You can almost get it with a standard wrench but the angle can lead to cross threading and a gradual distortion of the threads. Then the set screw blows out and you have a straight pull bolt gun. So either be really careful or buy a set of ball end wrenches. Alan
  8. For future reference the part in question is called the Carrier Release Pin. It's available from Brownells. Brownells link for pin I just installed an Easyloader and wasn't impressed with the roll pins from DMW at all so I ordered the Remington part. Alan
  9. Been there done that, twice. When I paid to have the original transfer reversed and a block put on my bank account PayPal immediately charged my credit card. I contacted my cards member services dept. and disputed the charge, they removed it and PayPal charged it again within a matter of hours. In order to prevent them from charging it back to my credit card in a neverending cycle my only option would be to cancel the card, and get a new number. My job requires constant travel and I can't do that right now. Strangely after reversing the transfer once and disputing the charge my zero balance account remains open. As to the legality of them doing that, after actually reading their policies in the user agreement I'm sure that's covered in there right after the "first born" clause.
  10. Mods any chance of getting some sort of sticky on the classifieds about this. I'm the buyer from the above and while I should have been aware of PayPals draconian policies it had somehow escaped my attention until now. And yes I know I should have read the user agreement before signing up. It frankly didn't occur to me that legal transactions would be contrary to it. The fact that it's owned by ebay should have been a red flag also I guess. Hopefully there's a legal solution for Dan to get "HIS" money from paypal. Six months without interest seems a bit too excessive to be legal. I'd also like to point out that my zero-balance account, which sent the offending payment, remains open. So I guess it's only possible to transgress their rules if you have funds in your account they can seize. PayPal=The Pal YOU Pay Hopefully I'll find some alternative to PayPal, if anyone has any other options I'd like to hear them. Regards, Alan
  11. IPSC doesn't closely resemble combat, and neither does IDPA. That doesn't mean that competing in either won't help you in a real gunfight. Both sports reward accurate, quick placement of rounds on the target. So does combat. In Iraq I didn't encounter spinning steel plates that I had to knock down. I did encounter targets presenting only a partial shot while moving. If you can hit a spinning plate you can probably hit an exposed head running behind a wall. In Iraq I didn't have an S_I with 20 round magazines, I had an M16 with a C-More and 30 round magazines. The fundamental approach was still the same, rapid engagement with accurate shot placement. Needing to take cover while reloading in combat generally makes itself readily apparent while bullets crack around you. I don't think we really need to focus on it at a freaking IPSC match on Saturday morning. This "lets be more like the real world" crap is getting old. If that's what you want to do I'm going to win. I'm just going to pull back and call in fire support on the whole range at the beep. Without the knowledge that someone is going to be shooting at you as soon as you breach the door it's not going to be the same. Get over it, or go play paintball or something. Better yet join the military, they can use you. When I'd just returned from Iraq I started shooting IPSC again. One of the gentlemen at the club I was shooting at invited me to an IDPA match the next weekend. I thought okay cool I'll try it. I got there and the first thing I noticed is that they spent most of their free time telling me either how messed up IPSC was or how well they'd do in a real gunfight. On my second stage there was a door to enter and a room to clear. My way of doing it didn't meet their requirements and I was given some arbitrary penalty for not doing the right thing or some nonesense. Nevermind that I'd done it exactly as I had several hundred times, successfully in a combat zone. I left then and there, I don't need accountants and IT people telling me how to be tactikewl. At the USPSA match last weekend a guy was complaining to me that the stages were like a carnival, this isn't realistic at all, and didn't I agree since I'd been in the Marines. I did agree, I told him to put all his gear in a pack run down the store we passed 8km back on the way in and back. Then dig a hole and get in it while I set off arty around him. Then when that's clear pop up and engage the two targets visible. As for me I'd rather continue on with the "Bubblegum" IPSC that I happen to find enjoyable. IPSC/IDPA can only be one of two things, a game, or serious training. The game may promote enhanced gun handling skills but it is not a substitute for application specific instruction in combat shooting. The two are and always will be mutually exclusive. It's a game, auto racing doesn't replicate driving on the street, at least not my street. And IPSC doesn't replicate fighting with a firearm. That's just my oppinion I could be wrong, but I won't admit it. Regards, Alan
  12. I think the scores should come up here, Area 4, I don't think they've had time yet. Had a great time, came in 2nd C, not as well as I'd hoped overall, but not as bad as I'd feared either. I'd also like to thank the match staff, it was damn hot out there and you guys made it a fun match. Regards, Alan Elam
  13. My buddy managed to load someone else's 9mm ammo that was in his bag into one of his Sig 220 magazines, which ordinarily is loaded with .45 as that's what Sig chambered the pistol for. After his second mag change a whole cartridge just popped out of the barrel and landed 3 feet in front of him. He didn't see it and after a click started a tap rack bang, when the slide went forward another went out the barrel and I yelled stop. I wasn't actually aware that you could load 9mm into a 45acp, but alas you can. You can also attempt to blame the owner of the ammo. This will only cause everyone to laugh harder though. Alan
  14. I'm squad #28(all day Sat.) I'll be the short stocky dude in the Surefire hat and an STI shirt I've yet to aquire. Finally got a chance to look the stages over, 50yds? I don't think my pistol shoots that far. Obviously this is a 3gun and I wasn't informed. Anybody know who the Range Master is and how to get in touch with him? I need to request a special penalty under 10.2.11 for stage 6, I don't do weak hand. I'd like to get it sorted out ahead of time as I'm sure he'll be pretty busy by the time I roll in on Saturday morning, if he's not already. Regards, Alan Elam
  15. Since the Simmons site lists adjustments as being 1/2 minute of angle I wonder if the newer scopes, i.e. not on sale at CDNN are really 1/2 moa. In limited use I haven't noticed a problem with the 1 moa adjustment. Mine dialed in to 1/2 inch from point of aim at 50 yds. If I miss a shot because of 1/2 an inch I need to move to a more advantageous position. In failing light at 200 yds I managed a 3 inch group, the spread of which was over the point of aim. Just my .02, Alan
  16. The final parts and needed tools came in the big brown truck today and I assembled this. For a before pic see any stock 16" A2 bushie with crappy 2pos stock. Took it out and function fired it, not a hitch. I went with the Miculek comp(because it was the cheapest by far, in case you can't tell by the "custom" iron sight job I'm on a budget). I have a hard time believing something could work better, quieter yes but the rifle doesn't move off an IPSC at 50 yds during recoil. I also like it's relatively small size. The CMT flat top I got from Global Tactical (Denny). Its fit is perfect and the finish is actually better than my fathers brand new bushie patrolmans carbine. I also got the YHM front sight/gas block from him, and I like it. The irons on top of the scope were just an idea I had using a pair of rings and old sights I already had and a 7 dollar piece of nylon pic rail. I'm going to see how I like it on close stuff, so far it seems pretty cool. The zip tie on the rear is a temp fix until I sight it in to find its final location then comes the rednecks friend, err epoxy. I have an idea it may be higher than optimal so I might rig something up along the lines of the JP sight on the handguard. I also need better rings, those I got free from CDNN and the best I can say about them is that they haven't fallen off yet. Speaking of handguards those are temporary and using the remaining nylon pic rail. I haven't decided whether I'm going to free float it or not. I plan on heading out to the range this weekend and doing some 300yd work to see what non free floated is capable of, I know before the rifle was moa capable so unless something has changed I'll end up with some SureFire hg's. Regards, Alan Elam
  17. I played with one at the NRA show and to me it looked kind of cheesy. Not from a quality standpoint, simply the design, specifically the odd way of incorporating the dust cover into it. Of course I'm right handed, if I had brass impacting my face I might think it was brilliant. Quality wise everything they had out looked to be well made, only complaint is the large deer head on their lower. Alan
  18. I can't stand the finger ridges and thumb dimples on Glocks at all. If you look around you can find police trade ins for cheap. I bought a G23 that way and it had holster wear, but I honestly don't think it was fired other than for qualification. You can also get the factory refurbs for a little bit more. I just wish I could get a gen 2 grip with a rail on it without having to dremel a brand new pistol. Alan
  19. I'd be in if CDNN carries them for 49.98 There's more info here Mueller Scope And on page 6 there are more links to other forums discussing it, including links to this thread and the FAL. Looks like an awesome idea. Alan
  20. i e-mailed twice about two months ago and got fast responses both times with more detailed responses than i expected. i also called about a month ago and talked to him. even if i'd had to wait his stuff is worth it. alan
  21. saw that you're from tx and was wondering if you're running a cold fusion kit. mine gave me fits to the point i thought it was eventually going to toast my engine. mostly solenoid related, got a new fuel solenoid and sold it. i have been thinking about getting them to plumb my intake for direct port though, i'm currently using an nx wet kit and i'm concerned about puddling if i step up any more. just wondering, alan
  22. Their tactics were generally sound but the should have frag'd the room before making entry. Maybe hit the entry with an AT4. The 180 was my biggest adjustment coming back from Iraq and shooting USPSA, everything was downrange, just don't point it at a friendly, first match or two I heard a chorus of "remember the 180" as I'd move and turn. Then my disasterous attempt to shoot IDPA ended with me leaving pissed because the same way I'd cleared about 3000 rooms wasn't tactical according to engineers and accountants, I won't even go into them telling me how to reload during a firefight.
  23. definitely let me know how that works for you, for 60 bucks i might finally break down and replace my ancient lyman beam scale. alan
  24. Mixed brass maybe, I'm just getting set up so all I've got so far is the factory stuff I shot. It was all once fired UMC. But then I guess you'd have seen that with lead as well. I'd have thought that the deviation would remain constant with just a switch to jacketed bullets.
  25. They're called beam clamps, insulator support will work also, they're pretty common but not really for the home market. Might try a Lowes or other. There are about a thousand different kinds so you'd probably not want to order sight unseen. An electrical supply or even business/industrial electrical contractor should have them. We used Tyco, unfortunately I don't have the packages and the part number isn't stamped so I have no idea which one I'm looking at. The reason I still have mine is it makes a great bearing press for small stuff. Alan
