  1. the girl friend is a certified(able) geek. she has both a diploma and a degree in Computer science. myself i am an Engineer Technician but have been in Municipal Administration for the past 20 years as both Town Manager and Town engineer. we are looking at moving from Alberta (north of Montana.)
  2. my experience with ABO was not good. i sent the girlfriends PDP 4 down to be repaired. we got it back put it on the gun and got 10 rounds out of it and it blew apart. when we sent it back we were told they couldn't fix it. no refund of course. so we moved here into a Cmore.
  3. will since there is such a diversified group on here i thought i would start here first. The girlfriend and I are seriously contemplating immigrating to Florida, however for us to do so we would need both work visa or Greencards plus jobs. i am looking for someone who specializes in this type of work and would be willing to take us on as clients. you can pm me here or email at walter.hornby@gmail.com
  4. Jim i think you really have to expand on that comment, like details!
  5. i would be leery of leaving a gun in the car. last year at the Canadian Nationals I left my gear bag in the car parked within ten feet of the "smoking" door and they broke the window, popped the trunk and made off with $6,000 worth of gear. fortunately the guns were in the room.
  6. Well i shot my first IDPA league night a couple of weeks ago. one of the things that was being done was on one stage people were deliberately taking 3 rounds on targets so that they could run their gun to slide lock on the barricade and do a reload while transiting across the barricade. Now i know there is a rule about dumping runs down range when not engaging a target but to me this seem to not be within the rules for IDPA. anyone care to enlighten me?
  7. the other thing to remember is that 38 Super and SC are a straight wall case while 9 x ** is a tapered case.
  8. without seeing the books it is hard to say but i am guessing that the lee load is for FMJ's while the Lyman's and IMA might be for lead loads. i believe if you are using Berry bullets, you want to start using the lead load data as Berry Bullets are "plated" bullets not FMJ's. Note that all information i have on Berry's Bullets are based on what i have read or been told.
  9. My girlfriends went through the same thing. when she started she ended up using my single stack 45. she then graduated to a single stack 38 super in open. from there she moved up to a SVI open. she did put in the short trigger which helped immensely as well as the undercut. these days she is shooting a Shadow (she won it at the BC Provincials) with the aluminium grips. My best suggestion is let a good coach work with her on different guns and then buy one she feels comfortable with.
  10. if you can get some flax straw bales, 4 feet thick will stop most rounds up to 3006. i did a bit of experiment and at 12 feet they stopped all 38 supper, 45, 223 and 2 out of 3 rounds of 3006. we used 8 foot thick bales to separate the bays at the 2008 Canadian Nationals with no problems. the only problem is that the bales do deteriorate over time. i think if you covered them with dirt they would last indefinitely. as for a dirt berm you can do as Sandman suggests and feather dirt in or you can dig yourself a trout pound on the back side of the berm. depending on how close the nearest neighbour is will dictate the size of your berm anyone with in a mile i would go with 20 feet.
  11. Last year was our first attendance of the open. we flew into Orlando, rented a car and even with a beer and a munchy stop we were still in Lake Wales about and hour and a half after we left Orlando. we stayed at the super 8. about the only "complaint" i had with it was that we couldn't get a room with a fridge. being a diabetic i like to keep fresh healthy food around. we just ended up buying a big cooler with lots of ice.
  12. that is the problem of shooting someone else's ammo. what makes major in my gun might not make it with yours. i do a lot of work with Canadian BDX. their 40 cal ammo will make major in 95% of the guns out there. however it will not make major in some guns? doesn't seem to matter if it is an old gun or a new gun. brand doesn't seem to matter either. it is just a fact of life. if you are buying ammo for a match chrono it before the match to make sure it make the appropriate power factor.
  13. that i took Cathy out to her her Mulie deer and by 930 it was hanging in the garage skinned and clean and we were sipping coffee in the kitchen.
  14. well we got out form 6 back this morning. it took 24 hours! now we have to figure out what we are doing for the rest of the two weeks.
  15. we make a holiday of it. shoot the match then do something else. this year we are looking at going back to the keys and do almost nothing. i have talked to the place we stayed at last year and they are working on getting us two weeks around the match. of course if anyone has something in a one bedroom in the keys for a reasonable price drop me a line.
  16. Nice IPSC matches apparently conduct an equipment check prior to competitors firing the first shot --- thereby allowing competitors who flunk the ability to correct the mistake, or to switch to a more appropriate division.... Nik not always true. at a big match they will sometimes run a pre-equipment check. However this is run just as a courtesy and is not done at all matches.
  17. Bill for as long as you do not have to cut the slide you can use any open sights that fit the gun. 5 pound trigger is a must and is usually measured using a weight. not sure how you guys south of the border are going to do it. Mags must be same dimensions as OEM mags. no capacity restriction on mags. I think those are the biggies off of the top of my head.
  18. my own experience is that the SVI are "tuned" better. i recently had to replace all of my mags (my gear was stolen out of the trunk of my rental car at the match hotel for the Canadian Nationals.) when i had bought STI mags i spent 3 months getting them tuned so that they all ran without a hiccup. so far the SVI mags that i bought have worked flawlessly out of the box.
  19. Well we have started to plan our trip to the 2010 Florida Open. once we are done shooting we are going to head back to the Keys for two weeks of sun and relaxation. does anyone have any suggestions of for places to stay in the Keys? we are looking for a one bedroom place and after that we are pretty flexible. Also any suggestions of things to see or do will be appreciated.
  20. check around, or start with the town and see who has a camera to run down your line to the main. it could answer your problems quickly.
  21. Thanks Bob. it will. if nothign else i cna cross reference it.
  22. HELP! i tired to order from McMaster's and they told me they wouldn't ship to Canada! damn it is bad enough with gun stuff but not machine parts! would someone be willing to pick me up the parts and ship it to me. i would of course reimburse you for your time and the parts.
