  1. I think it is still in production, have not had a real hard time finding it, sometimes yes..like before the "great" election...
  2. Agree, an alternate for the price concious is Tru Blue, makes a lot of gas at much less powder and meters excellent.
  3. I have shot this powder for years..its a good load..takes a good powder drop...I am running 9.7 in a full size open gun with no popples..as always work up your load for your barrel.
  4. Just put together the NFA upper sidecharger with matching lower LRBHO, t The Hiperfire trigger and KAK 7.5 buffer are running fine, test fired 7 different powders and find it runs best at 1000- 1050 feet per second, smooth no hiccups. Under 900 fps cycling gets erratic, other wise its has been a fine system nice quality. Curious about the JP springless system though, maybe some more testing with a heavier buffer...
  5. I have reloaded and shot over a 100,000 rounds of .38 Super Comp, however...I only use SRP when running high PF loads 173+ for a major match as the SRP's are designed to handle the excessive pressures (40,000+ ..SAAMI max is 36,000psi)....small pistol primers are not designed for this kind of pressure although many use them. (wacth forprimer flattening, craters). The SRP is inherently a harder shell for this reason, I find as many others that Federals are the most sensitive to primer strike in SRP, then WIN and CCI being the hardest. I only use SR primers when running my Open gun in Steel Challenge matches where the powder charge is reduced considerably, and for major always SRP. My two.....
  6. Hornady 1 Shot, I throw a pile on a square cookie pan and flatten em out, then a few sprays...let dry...or in a plastic bag roll around ...throw on cookie sheet... let dry 5 minutes.....awesome .
  7. I load to 1.245-1.250 in full size Bedell .38 Super flawlessly....it will not run Super Brass consistently....maybe try SuperComp (small rim)....your extractor may not be set up for Super Brass... Starline SuperC runs 1.385 on the rim.....Super runs 1.400..........may be just enough to cause some issues.
  8. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a "name brand" used gun, I bought a Bedell shorty .38 super on here for $2100 and it has run like a raped ape for 2 years straight... now a back up gun for steel mostly as I bought a full size Bedell with the same results and not looking back to a short frame ever again...full size all the way ...I know guys that have bought used Camerons, SVI's, Dawsons etc. and all ran great....just look for a good name...glad I went the way I did as well not wanting to put a bucket of cash into a "maybe" gun class coming from limited, plus I can reload supercomps 7-10 times, usually gets lost before they get a chance to crack.....if your running at major you cant reload 9mm like that no matter how cheap they are..and you have to keep a healthy supply of them around due to their short life cycle...a thousand pcs of Starline (all I run) cost me .15 each to run and 9mm is .13 each (again Starline)..this is really nothing in the game we play...plus I have never had a problem with Supercomp running consistently... in and out of battery whether for steel loads or major.....happy hunting.
  9. Are you using SuperComp Brass or regular Super?
  10. I shoot in USPSA Open class .38 Super Comp, I sight in at 20 yards which covers me for most target ranges, unless it is a standards stage (50yards) bullet drop does not come into any factor in my experience. 5 yard "hoser" targets always get my attention though...I see many A zone hits missed at close range due to overconfidence, ...or this one is easy...
  11. Montana JHP in .38 Super Comp, .40 and 45....always...as Arlin said the JHP in my DWA 1911 9mm were sketchy too, and the only competition gun I have that did not eat Montana JHP's on a regular diet.....that said....I have recently ran 1000 rounds of Berrys 124g 9mmTP (flat point)through my Open gun without one mis-feed and they are as accurate as anything else I have triggered down the pipe...averaging 20-25,000 rounds a year and the price of the Berrys it is now my 1st line go to bullet for practice and local matches ..next to MG.
  12. A friend of mine has been shooting Berrys "TP" (Thick Plate) with no issue in his .38 Super Race gun,...I believe these are the only ones in their line up that are capable of handling the speed.
  13. I have 2 650's and a 550, each one is set for a specific caliber, ie; .223 , .40 and .38 Super,...the .38 super unit has a high rate of turnover due to the load rate for USPSA, I use the same Viht in that hopper and never empty it, it empties itself or turns over every other week, it has stayed clear, however the .40 hopper has turned yellow from storing Vit 320 in it.. more than likely from the heat in AZ, and at much less turnover. I have chrono'd for matches with the 320 after months of storing in the hopper, no discernible PF difference. All the presses have the current flavor of powder in each hopper labeled with the mfg# V-105 etc and Lot # as well... I do not like to mix lots of the same powder even. I guess the only "damage" I have seen over the years is a yellow'd plastic container......dried out powder??....hmmm, doesn't get any drier in my garage during the summer at 100- 110 degree averages (until I fire up the garage AC to load ......so kabooms from dried powder??...I don't know if I have ever heard of that event. We are told Powder should be stored in the proverbial cool dry place with weak storage walls to avoid pressure build up in the event of powder ignition,..and according to Hodgdon, "deteriorating powder stored above 90 degress usually has a noticeable acidic odor (not the usual solvent odors of alcohol, ether or acetone), also a red dust or sticky substance may form on the powder. This extreme deterioration can result in spontaneous combustion ultimately."...my powder gets drier than a popcorn fart...however this condition has never appeared in my cave..I'm sure at the high heat there is some deterioration, but has not been severe enough to produce any issues for me.
  14. STI EDGE Fiber optic front sight. Used 1 season, 5000 rounds (On USPSA site )$1550.....sellin the mags separate May be worth a look,...that extra $250 will buy some mags
  15. The price is subjective to what you want in a limited gun, there are many used out there that are tricked out in the $1800+ range, some very new. I found a used Bone stock Edge that I picked up in very good shape for $950 (guy selling didn't know what he had) it was my first limited gun and I learned a lot from it, then when I stepped up to used STI custom, I knew immediately the trigger was better and what I liked about it and they way it handled and shot, I paid $2100 for it, would I do it again instead of buying a new Edge and tricking it out...yes...but the Edge is a tank and would just run and run, I definitely loved that gun for the 2 years I had it,...if money is tight you may want to keep looking,..I just ran across another custom Hard Chromed STI EAGLE in .40 the guy bought and shot 4 matches with and got transferred to a gun hater state,...he parted with it for 1650...it is VERY NEW and very nice,...so If you want a place to start and are at the price point max, then I think Edge is a great gun. BTW...I sold the my Edge for $1300
  16. I ran my first 1000 Wolf SRP thru my STI .38 Super Open gun, all fired just fine,..., I did notice the feel of them seating is a little different than Wins on my 650,...but no issues
  17. Area 2 a couple years back, my first "Major",..nervously cleaning all my .40 Sti mags for the 3rd time, happen to catch the Great One Rob Leatham hanging out by stage 10 after a quick chat and feeling pumped, I went back to my tailgate and mags, put them all to together, loaded em up and headed for the first stage of the day,...double plate racks, one on each end of the COF, running to the end for the last rack and array,..just before I stopped to shoot, slapped in a mag and mounted the gun, as soon as I did the grams pad shot off like rocket, spring went flying and 21 rounds of .40 spewing all over the ground,... staring in shock thinking I just got hit by scud,...brain came back and realized what happened, since it did not come out on its own weight, had to dig the mag tube out (no base pad) finished up the stage and sheepishly sat there digging all my stuff out of the dirt,......caution..... I have discovered at no little inconvenience that you must be SURE base pads are re-installed correctly and the little steel "U" holder that goes thru the base pad holes in a Grams base pad MUST CATCH "BOTH" OF THE MAG LIPS to hold it on.....or you will be littering the landscape with your ammo......(first and last time)
  18. I have a 8 for back up, it is not too large for night shoots on plates at distance and I do like it for the day, I usually use a 6 as a standard, stills works ok for 55 year old eyeballs...
  19. Those are easy to make out of coat hanger wire, I used a dowel rod to shape the circle part... fyi.
  20. Just found a DW PM9 after a long search, and have to agree on the DW,.. I have other 1911-2011's, Ruger, Caspian, Kiimber and a DW in .45 acp, STI EDGE for Limited, STI 38 Super for Open... and most of all l love my STI's....however after loading up some vit 320 under 124 MG JHP and sending 500 rounds down the pipe of the PM9, I am very impressed with 9mm in a 1911, fit-finish-performance is excellent for the money, I think I am going to run it in the Western States Single Stack, will shoot minor, but it will be a blast for sure...Wesson has maintained a very nice product from the .45 down to this 9 in my opinion..
  21. I just picked up Dan Wesson PM9 that I am going to shoot minor in the Western States Classic in January, usually shoot .45 but have been looking for this guy for a long time and it popped up just in time, I have been running some loads tonight with Vit 320 under a 124g MG JHP, what a nice soft shooting 1911 and very accurate, I am going to have fun with this one...love it so far! BTW; bought all Wilson ETM mags, so the mags (and Pm9) ran flawless after 500 rounds...
  22. All I have used is the Master Chrony with the printer, and use the printer all the time, agree with all the suggestions above, have used the sky screens when it was too bright, but found a IPSC target on top of the rods did a good job when it was real bright, ususally dont need it in the shade though...my buddy has shot one of mine already, blew up the exit eyeball, i found that it was better to have him take aim on the target first few shots see where they hit then moved the chrony into position, he can hold on the same spot from 12 feet, so no more busted eyeballs, Chrony's are a little antiquated in the directions dept, but once you use it a few times, you may find like I did that there are only a few functions I use, I have compared it with other chrono's and it was right there, its always worked, and got me close enough to the PF I was after for major matches, it should do fine for you, and that unit is very simple to run without the remote display and printer stuff, although I do like the extras, nice to keep the printouts stored away, especially since i shoot .38 super, .40 and .45 in competition, so the Chrony is a must...you will like having one... Suggestion: use a ransom rest until you get comfortable with shooting over it ....and always start high and work down to about 6 inches above the eyes.....
  23. This- and I usually aim a little high and in the direction of the magazine. I'm no wizard or anything, but I usually get my hits WHO. Only practice will tell you exactly how much hold off is required. That is good advice, I have met few guys that are exceptional at this in competition, however I found this was the worst shooting position for me in USPSA limited, or single stack,...I was doing very well across the board but would lose horribly on the stage that required WH, or SH to WH transtions, I found that starting with the IPSC target in close and moving out slowly showed me that my shots hitting on the right hand of the target (D-zone or misses) were from over gripping in an attempt to control recoil, once I let the sights rise and fall as if in freestyle (trigger control) I was bringing shots in on the paper at least, I also jammed my right fist just under my ribs, turn body slightly and barely canted the gun, after practicing this way at 7-10-15 yards I became very confident, I used shoot-n-C targets so it was very clear to me where I was hitting ....however I still have to hold just on the inside left edge of the D zone, and my shots are right in the A-C zone regularly,.....this may not be acceptable to some master levels shooters, but for this B shooter I do not have to think about where I am aiming, left edge and go,....shots fall to the right on average 4-6 inches....acceptable for me, same method on plates as well... Practice, practice what you are weakest at and become well rounded, its very easy to work on freestyle and strong H, but few want to work on the PITA stuff,.....however anything you encounter in a match you can enter with confidence instead of anxiety, knowing... "I got this"... O1
  24. I started USPSA in Single Stack, (mucho mag changes) and never "accidentally" hit my mag release moving on a stage even after I switched to Limited with an STI Edge, however...started shooting OPEN in .38 SuperComp a few months ago, and now I draw and land the right hand thumb on the safety like your supposed to.. and bang bang etc....start moving and for some wierd reason as I move and shoot or move to another array the thumb slides off the safety and down in the area of the mag release...in the last month I have dropped 4-5 almost full or half full big sticks or 140's in the dirt when I should be shooting,....last one was on a run and gun 28 round hoser down to the last port with a bear trap and 2 clams open-shut, (gotta be quick and focused to get 4 shots out before they close), I had a great run and time going....got to and stomped on the trap, (thumb had slid down there... again!!) and ...bloop....big stick hits the ground, clams slam shut,. ...hammer in another mag....now I get 2 head shots in the tiny A zone square at 15 yards... ......anyway....this stuff can get in your head, especially when you dont know where it comes from, so this weeks match i caught myself in the middle of a run on an array of 6 steel poppers...saw my thumb by the mag button, stopped shooting for a couple seconds and moved it back on top where it belongs, and saved a potential mag dump.....awareness of a weakness is a good thing, the tough part is trying to correct a fault you never had before and not knowing how.... (also sounds like that RO may have been new, or too itchy to get to the "show clear" mode)
