I like the extra light I can get around a .090 front sight. It makes finding the sight faster.

Seeking input for 1,000 yard rifle and scope
1760yds replied to West Texas Granny's topic in Precision Rifle
Why? Because the stadia lines get thicker as you go up in magnification. This can actually end up obscuring small targets at high magnification. Exactly. The reticle grows as you turn the power up. The X ring is 5 inches at 1000 yards and you'll cover it up. There is also no need as you will always shoot known distances in F class. -
Seeking input for 1,000 yard rifle and scope

1) You didn't say what your budget is. Budget will determine the answer. 2) If you are going to shoot F open you definitely don't want a .308. F-TR requires .308 or .223 but F Open is just that, its open, and anyone really competitive that didn't have to shoot a .308 at 1000 yards wouldn't. You won't see many if any .308's in F Open. 3)Action isn't as important as barrel. If you are on a budget buy either a completed Savage in 6.5-284 or if you are at all handy buy a Savage action and barrel it yourself. Its easy to do with minimal tools. How to re-barrel a Savage If you do that you are not limited to chamberings by the factory. If you are not limited by budget then buy a Sturgeon or other custom action. If you are serious about shooting you will be way better off in the end and if you decide to get out the custom action it will be worth close to what you paid for it. You can never get your costs out of a Rem 700 action after you spend the money blueprinting and making them competitive. 3)Barrel. If you are on a budget and don't want to build your own gun buy a completed Savage single shot in 6.5-284. with a 30 inch barrel. Comes ready to go from the factory with a great trigger. You can be competitive with that. If you are interested in building and are on a budget I highly recommend the Criterion barrels. You can get them pre chambered and ready to install. There is a guy on Savageshooters that sells them all ready to go. Get a 30 inch barrel. If you don't like recoil look at 6mm or 6.5. If you can handle some recoil take a look at the 7wsm or 7saum. Recoil isn't really recoil as your gun can weigh over 20lbs in F open. 4) Buy good glass. It might be more important than the gun. Nightforce now has more long range records than any other scope company. They are a little spendy. Sightron's new SIII's have very similar glass and track perfectly. The Sightron can be picked up new for $750 and you can be very competitive with it. I wouldn't really consider any other scopes for F Open unless it was a March. They cost upwards of $3k. Avoid FFP reticle's for your open F Class gun. Hope that helps -
Deciding on a bullet should really be based off of what you are going to use it for. Long range use a Sierra 175 or a Hornady 178. Look for good b.c. If you are hunting you should look for other things. If you are just plinking then find a cheap bullet that shoots well in your gun. Give us more info so we can help.

If I could start all over again...I'd be this kid. By the way my parents failed me by not having me shoot matches at this age. -

You should use a strongmount. Setup looks good. Actually, you should sell me one of those 550's. -

Soft case to hold AR and 52" shotgun?
1760yds replied to Pro2AInPA's topic in Multi-gun Gear & Accessories
So far I haven't had any problems with the Safariland 3 Gun Case but all I've used it for is transporting my rifle, shotgun and equipment. All the heavy stuff still rides in a MidwayUSA range bag. -
My cable doesn't get Versus but I'm hoping someone will make it available the day after on the internet. I watched season 2 of Top Shot on the internet. I'm hoping this will be the same.

I remember being told something about the contour having most of the advantages of a heavy barrel without the weight. The extra diameter on the end helps harmonics and barrel whip. I suppose the other obvious reason is because JP manufactures and sells thermal dissipators that go on the barrel in the section you are referring to. Supposedly helps a ton with heat dissipation and prevents throat erosion due to excessive heat. The Thermal Dissipator increases surface area by like 700%.

At the MGM Ironman and at a 3 gun match in Baker City, OR they had tennis balls on strings. In the Ironman it was a bonus pistol shot at about 20-25 yards. At the 3 Gun in Baker it was a rifle target. I never saw it get shot off the string but you could certianly tell when it got hit as it would dance or spin. It was also fairly challenging to hit especially if there was wind.

who says you cant be competitive shooting minor.
1760yds replied to digby7's topic in Little things I've Noticed
If you're not reloading it doesn't sound like you have much choice but to shoot minor. That being said get good and then switch to major when it really is the factor keeping you from winning. -
You should look at a Sightron 6-24x50 SIII with either MOA reticle or MILS. I'm switching all my long range optics to Sightron SIII's. The glass is equal to Nightforce and they track perfectly. They also cost less than half of what a Nightforce costs. Also 24x should be more than enough needed to shoot 600 yards. When mirage is bad I turn power down to 16x at 1000 yard F-TR Matches. That being said I have a Nightforce 5.5-22x56 with NPR2 Illuminated reticle that I'd make you a deal on.
