  1. How about grips? Are they the same as a regular p226? I want to pick up another set of grips to stipple unless someone can recommend a better solution.
  2. I am supposed to go pick up a new X5 Competition model tomorrow. Bladetech makes holsters for it I see, anyone else I should check out for holsters? I would like something with some sort of retention if possible. Do these mags fit an X5? : http://www.cdnninvestments.com/2269mm20blan.html How about a standard 226 magazine with a basepad on it? Will that fit?
  3. The place i order my projectiles from ships via SpeeDee Delivery. Next day basically from IL to MN and the delivery guy knows 1) parking is in the back, 2) Just throw it on the stairs of the deck. I will get it from there! I have never had a face face encounter with him, not delivering ammo anyway. I met him once delivering a counter top. He commented "every time I see your address I know no matter how big the box is, its going to be heavy."
  4. Don't take this the wrong way, but why would you assume that your phone call should be such a high priority? You're not looking to do a penny's worth of business with him, you're not checking on a pending order--you're just calling to talk about a gun he already built and sold to somebody else. Any amount of time he might take to talk with you would be done purely as a courtesy--you've heard the expression "time is money," right?--and yet you're acting annoyed that he's not instantly jumping up to return your call in the middle of his work day? I know you're excited, and nervous, and all that stuff.....but unless you want to make Derek's crank list, you might want to back off a notch or two here. Sounds like your reading a lot in to my post... If I was annoyed I would have stated it, dont take me as some "pay attention to me, I am entitled to special treatment" internet fan boy. I don't assume my call is any priority. I merely stated he didnt answer and doesnt have an answering machine. No sweat or stress from me, the best gunsmith I know does not have an answering machine (he's too busy perfecting his craft to talk on the phone much). I dont actually want to BS or ask about the pistol at all. The components and the builder do all the speaking I need. I just want to know how much and how long it will take to get a 9mm top half built for the gun, some more tuned .40 magazines and mags for the 9mm top as well. I am a general contractor, I understand time is money... Considering I was inquiring about spending money I don't think that will get me on anyone's "crank list" as you called it. Unless of course your the one with the bat phone linked straight to Derek, in which case I am likely already on his list judging by the tone of your last post.
  5. I hope he gets back to me in a timely manner. I would like my questions asked before I plop down my cash on this gun.
  6. Any idea how old he is? I am 27 and would like to get involved with a smith who I know is going to be around for a while.
  7. Long story short, I am picking up a .40 limited gun that was built by Derek at Millenium Customs. Its an ION bonded full length dust cover gun built with all top shelf components (Schuneman, Koenig, Aftec, etc....) I tried calling this morning and like most smiths I am sure he is busy behind a mill or drill press and he doesn't have an answering machine. Has anyone had experience with him (good and or bad)? I searched here on the forum and see a few of the FL guys recommend him. I am in MN so if I have problems with my gun it will have to be shipped etc... This gun is an engagement gift and I plan on retaining this one in my collection for the remainder of my days here on planet earth.I would like to have a 9mm top half built for the gun as well as add some more magazines, I want to make sure I am getting involved with a reputable builder who is going to be in business for a number of years and will be able to service this gun in the future. I sent him an e-mail this morning after I called. I hope he gets back to me in a timely manner.
  8. That young man introduced himself to me on Saturday and asked a bunch of questions about my guns. He explained to me he couldn't shoot this match as his parents make him save to pay his own entry fees and he couldn't afford to shoot this and the several other majors he is attending this year. My hats off to his parents. Saving! Thats a great lesson for a young person to learn! Really seemed like a nice kid and I hope to see him at the top of this game someday!
  9. Perfect! Very near our hotel. What are the rules at these state/public ranges? I presume they close at dark or 30minutes before? Do we have to pay a permit or access fee at the park to use the range? I wouldn't mind checking the zero on my rifle one last time after the trip. I was doing some longer range practice this past weekend and want to verify what my hits are like at 40-60yards.
  10. What was the street price on these Colts? How long was his order out there? I talked to my FFL and he said they are showing no availability on that sku.
  11. Found it: http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=331983
  12. Correct its a Schwartz, not a series 80. I removed the parts from the slide of mine. I then removed the activator bar from the trigger group and ground it down. Then re-installed so as to act as a frame filler. Otherwise you can buy the same frame filler part from Brownells for $4.
  13. I have been shooting single stack and am thinking about getting into limited. My question is it possible to make a striker gun competitive? Based on my budget I could either build an M&P (mag well, guide rod, trigger, have the slide machined down, etc...) OR........ I can buy a used 2011. I saw a couple of used ones at the range in the past weeks in that $1500-$2000 price range. One was an older Benny Fat Free 6" for $1500 and the other a Bedell built on a Caspian frame for $2000. Input? Thoughts?
  14. I shoot with 3 different clubs. Policy/ettiquite is as follows. Club #1 - Everyone helps, usually by the time I get done checking my hits with the RO several guys are handing me my brass. Club #2 - Policy - If you brass is warm OR marked you can pick it up. Otherwise all brass is for the clean up crew to pick up after the match is torn down. This club gives a $5 discount for set up, and a $5 discount for tear down. If you help with both you shoot the match for $10! Club #3 - No one cares and generally we are asked to pick up brass at the end of the match if the bays are not already picked clean. We brass rats usually get together and help one another between shooters. If someone is shooting 38 super, comp, 10mm, 45acp or some other caliber where brass is more expensive then I generally try and give them a hand. I started shooting 45acp and as a young rookie shooter I NEEDED every piece of brass I could get otherwise I couldn't afford to shoot.

    Clarity...

I am in my second year of 3gun and yesterday at a local match I experienced one of those perfect moments of slow motion clarity... I am just starting to flirt with this level of comfort shooting USPSA and this is the first time I have ever experienced this with my AR in hand. The stage required a right to left hand transition, I went from my strong side to the weak side and started engaging targets. On the 3rd target I realized i was pulling the trigger using my middle finger and it was working perfectly! All of the hits were good and I was as fast as ever! I am a general contractor and often use my middle finger to operate nail/screw guns. I have small hands and it is much more powerful/comfortable at times. I grew up playing tournament paintball where being ambidextrous is the key to playing tight and most modern paintball markers are designed with a two finger trigger to aid in high speed shooting. I am assuming that i diverted to this technique as that is where my body feels most comfortable. I dont plan on practicing this way in the future but it was an eye opening experience for me. Really felt like the first time I had fallen back on my previously acquired skills and it worked while shooting an AR at speed.
  16. Vrooom said it best, get a couple good manuals, read cover to cover. Ask questions!
  17. Bladetech kydex was my choice. Shooting SS I usually have between 4-6 on my belt depending on the shoot. Good luck! SS is where its at!
  18. Lots of Dillon fan boys here on BEno's. I think they are without a doubt the most advanced and consistent presses on the market. I also feel they are some of the most complex. Like anything in life there is a learning curve. It really sucks to get a fancy new progressive and load up a bunch of rounds minus powder... Get yourself a turret press. If you get serious about reloading you will get a progressive to load pistol and high volume rifle ammo on later. I loaded on a Lee Classic Turret to start out and you can still build a mess of ammo in a couple hours time. The self indexing feature of the Classic Turret is a big bonus in my eyes. Everyone who is going go come along and say Lee is junk is obviously not a reloader or a realist. They are all machines! Red, blue, or green and they all have there nuances and require some tinkering to get them running right and they all require upkeep and maintenance to keep them running in perfect form. The thing you need to do first is buy two or three manuals and read everything in them two or three times (excluding the load data), unless its a caliber you intend to load, in which case you should study the data and highlight the bullets and powders you are interested in. Then post the loads you are contemplating and everyone will give you positives/negatives associated with your potential combo's.
  19. Am I on the wrong tracking thinking I will use 55gr for anything under 100 yds and 69SMK's for anything over 100yds? Will my zero's be too different to make this work?
  20. Did you express to them that you are a competitive shooter and you have a comp coming up? I had this conversation with them and they turned my XD around in 8 days when it was having issues.
  21. I was under the impression the DOH had to be removed from that holster configuration for it to be production legal. I have the same set up and run it minus the DOH in production and with the DOH for 3gun.
  22. How about brass? I just sorted a couple thousand pieces of brass I bought this past summer. 1000 pieces Lake City, 500 pieces BHA Match, 300 Winchester, 300 RP. Thinking of using the LC for my 55gr rounds and BHA & Win for my SMK's. Is the RP usable? I have heard its soft, I guess it can be loaded once as throw away brass or for the PDog fields.
  23. I have a 55gr load worked up for this coming 3gun season. I would like to work up a load using 69gr SMK's for the longer shots. I have a 20" Hbar barrel with rifle length gas system and Cooley Comp. For powder I have a couple pounds of 748 and 8lbs of Ramshot Tac. Any load input for my set up and the 69gr SMK's would be greatly appreciated.
  24. Except for the holes in the molded forearm. For that kind of money I would have thought they would have filled them somehow. Those are "speed holes" kinda like the dimples on a golf ball.
  25. I dryfire the pistol about 20minutes a day, also practice mag changes during this time. I then usually do 10minutes of rifle (couple mag changes) but mostly I just practice snapping in to different positions and transitioning out of them. Shotgun is my least favorite to practice. I do 20 reload drills (reloading eight from two caddies of four).
