  1. I am offended by the unfair characterization of the "bulge" as belonging to Glock when Sig, Beretta, and S&W bulges the case by the same amount or more. Glock, in fact, has the tightest chamber of the group judging by total case expansion. Please stop singling out a particular race of handguns. It is wrong.

  5. I can tell you that 3.1 grains of N320 is max but safe under a 147 XTP @ 1.085" judging by case expansion, primer appearance, and Quick Load's math. I'm going to try 3.3 grains @ 1.105 and 1.115" next. So, 3.5 grains at longer OAL's has to be safe. QL says 3.7 grains is max @ 1.150" OAL.
  6. That OAL is the absolute minimum for a 147gr. Gold Dot hollow point according to CCI Speer tech support they use 1.120 plus or minus 15 thousandths. I had to send some rounds back to manufacturer because they were under 1.105 oal. You won't see pressure signs with straight-walled pistol cases until you are way over pressure, or too late. That being said I load mine with 4.6 of 3n37, at 1.160 plus or minus 4 thousandths oal, for a power factor of 136, with a SD of 9.89. primers flattened, crattered,case badly bulged at the base are signs of overpressure we're looking after when testing . VV310 +anything over 90gr bullit .as there is no existing data in any book ,i had to guess and see from the first hand data collected from many experienced reloaders/shooters of this site...wich i'm glad i did. ...and on top of that,reming you the shadow show a very short chamber, over 1.120 it defenatly touch the riffling.....then, knowing this factor + a very fast propellant(vv310) wich you cant get any confirmed data coming with= a good recipe for flying parts ,wich doesn't mean nothing can be done safely another point of view here .vihtauori stipulate a oal of 1.142 for all their 9mm loads (from 3.8 to 4.2) with the vv340/147 HP combo..... for my CZ i just cant load this coal, all left is reducing the minmum powder charge of like 0.2-0.3 grs for the significantly shortened COAL. VV310/147grs .....,when you cant find any reliable tested data, the correct approach is going with the correct oal for your own barrel first, then work a load from a safe starting point , generaly a little under the MIN LOAD suggested for similar powders showing the same burning rate . Acccording to QL, your combo makes in excess of 50000PSI. Are you using CCI primers? Cuz waiting for CCI primers to flatten will land you in the hospital.
  7. Did you use a kinetic bullet puller? If so, you prolly knocked the priming mix outa the primer cup, hence the squib. I did that once and noticed the priming mix contaminated the powder inside the case. I had to trash the primers and the powder.

  9. He said the crimp is for reliability, not improved combustion, although it does help combustion a bit. I don't believe that a taper crimp increases bullet pull because the mechanical lock is too slight, as opposed to a roll crimp into a pronounced crimp groove. My solution to bullet pull consistency is to clean the insides of my cases. Bare brass on copper creates more friction than carbon coated brass. That's why you'll see a lower ES using new brass than when using 1x fired. Someone here did a comparative test using new vs fired brass and new brass cut the ES in half.

  11. Could you tell me more about the heavier crimp and Bullseye shooting? Is there a link you can direct me to? I have always believed that taper crimp does nothing for autoloaders, but your experiment shows there is a velocity increase. I have also noticed that Winchester factory 9mm is crimped more heavily than the other brands. I have always crimped minimally, believing that an unmolested bullet shoots better.
  12. I have used 4.3 grains at 1.100" in my Sigs. 4 grains is mild.
  13. Be careful with fast powders and 147gr Gold Dots. The last box I bought has a bullet length variance of .025". This can raise pressures to dangerous levels in a small capacity case.

  15. +1 Les Baer uses CM barrels in his pistols. They will rust if subjected to powdered moly and humidity.
  16. I like RP 147gr FMJ over 3.5grs of 231 at a 1.150" OAL sparked by RP 5 1/2 primers. That is the softest 9mm I have ever fired. It feels like a 38 HBWC out of a "N" Frame S&W.
  17. How do you determine your chamber throat depth? I have a G34 with a stock barrel and a lone wolf barrel for lead bullets. You remove the barrel, seat a bullet long, try to chamber it, and seat a littme deeper until the casehead is flush with the barrel hood. That is your max OAL.

  19. A heavier recoil spring will delay the slide and barrel assembly from recoiling to the rear. This delay will change the barrel harmonics and may affect accuracy.
  20. I'm not talking about the barrel unlocking. I'm talking about the slide and the barrel recoiling to the rear together for about a sixteenth of an inch while locked together, then unlocking after the bullet has left the muzzle.

  22. If you look at slow motion video of a 1911, the barrel and slide recoil together for about a sixteenth of an inch before the bullet exits the muzzle.

  24. That is certainly excellent consistency. The worst I have seen is R-P anywhere from .738" to .754"
