  1. I call Richmond my home range and I will be shooting the Saturday practice and the match on Sunday this weekend. I'm currently shooting single stack, but if you can make it out either day, I'll bring the limited gun and you're welcome to shoot it. Look for the old guy with the hot pink base pads. ETA: Sent you a PM too.
  2. Note for your consideration if you are considering SV: They're running at least a 13-14 month wait. I have a year old SV Limited gun and will soon take delivery of a Single Stack gun from them. The Limited gun was 13 months and the SS should be right at about 14 months. The Limited gun is (to me) an exceptional firearm. Coming from a history of franken guns, it is an absolute joy to shoot. Also, as mentioned, Brandon Strayer (son of Sandy) provides excellent service before and after purchase.
  3. Waiting between turns? There's no waiting between turns! You're supposed to be resetting the stage for the next shooter Great reading about your progress.
  4. Welcome! Super 1050? Talk about jumping in with both feet! BOOYAH! Lots of great people and info on the forum. Enjoy the ride.
  5. If you're happy with the sights, a trigger job migbt be all you need. Reliability is a big part of the game.. Reasonable accuracy is also a requirement. The gun needs to shoot where you point it and it needs to go bang every time you pull the trigger. After that, it's all you. Welcome !
  6. I am using both AA (40) and DC (45) until I fully convert to 40 and buy a press. Both manufacturers produce quality product and greatly support the shooting sports.
  7. I just love getting the call from Brandon @ SV that a new gun is ready for transfer. Even though we California folks have to buy off the roster and jump through a few extra hoops, I now know the long wait is coming to an end. Now where did I put that FFL info?
  8. As soon as they were announced, I was im mediately interested in the DAA Single Stack Racer magazine carriers. The new SS Racers promised greater adjustability and a trimmer profile than the CR Speed doubles I have been running for Single Stack. They became available in February and a quick call to CEDDAA and six units were on their way. I got them on the belt last week and a did a little dry/live fire and as I said in another thread, they release a mag "slicker than a loogie on a linoleum floor". The release is incredibly smooth and effortless from minimum to maximum retention (OK nearly effortless at max) as adjusted with the tension screw. I run minimum retention starting with the first carriers gradually increasing the tension for each subsequent carrier as I progress around the backside. They mount to the belt using the usual DAA RM/Racer mount bracket/hanger which is a two screw plus steel plate affair. Unlike my RM carriers, which I run in Limited, I did not need to pound the belt onto the bracket. They fit right on without any slop to my DAA belt and were rock solid after tightening the two screws. Here are a few other initial impressions: Brass fittings/inserts are used for bearing surfaces where the mounting screws go The carrier body is solid plastic - meaning sturdy They are open on the bottom so there is no contact with the bullet of the first round and any dirt or grit can fall out They use a "toothed" plate to adjust the rotation of the carrier a full 360 degrees in reasonably fine increments They are ambidextrous so lefties can drink the DAA koolaid The inside of the body is very smooth - it seems polished in comparison to the exterior One feature important to some is the ability to mount the carrier at 90 degrees to the belt. DAA advises that the 90 degree option is possible but I've found that, though this can be accomplished, it cannot be done out of the box. Here are the two problems that prevent the 90 degree option without additional modification: The head of the mounting screw does not fit between the track that supports the tension spring assembly There is no access hole on the front side of the carrier to allow (easy) access to secure the mounting screw I believe the DAA response to these issues would be the same as they are for the Racer carriers: chuck the screw into a drill and turn the head down to fit drill your own access hole Even if one were to turn the screw head down, the absence of a front access hole means forceps/tweezers are required to place the mounting screw. Although, these are not complicated operations and within the capabilities of most anyone with the tools and a little mechanical ability, as others have mentioned in other threads, the need to do so for oneself leaves one feeling that the product as delivered is somewhat incomplete. Overall, I'm quite satisfied with these carriers. For the price, they offer a lot of adjustability and security, they are aesthetically pleasing though the silver color I ordered was not quite what I thought (should have ordered black). I plan to do the 90 degree modification and I'm also considering altering the top/front so my index finger can index on the magazine. I'll post some pics and update this thread as I work through the mods.
  9. Thanks everyone! We're making final date arrangements which unfortunately will be after your state championships. Ray - I replied to your pm. I'm looking forward to a little getaway. My mom was born-n-raised in Honolulu and we still have family there. I used to spend summers there working banquet at the Royal Hawaiian.
  10. E- Are you shooting this weekend? The carpool offer is a standing one....
  11. Aloha Maui shooters! This mainland boy is headed west over the pond for a little R&R in late March. I've checked the Valley Isle Sport Shooters site and there's a match scheduled for the Sunday after I arrive. I'd love to meet and shoot a match with you all. Even though I've read about the local registration requirements in another thread and I'll be checking with the airline for their firearms policies, I'd welcome any tips to make the legal compliance part as relaxing as possible. Mahalo ETA: Forgot to mention that I'll be shooting the single stack gun with 8 round magazines.
  12. Congrats! There's nothing quite like that new gun smell If you haven't already, you might consider starting a personal range diary in the Range Diary sub-fo. It's a handy space that you can use to track your progress.
  13. C'daddies for bait? Maybe so, but boiled daddies make some good eatin'
  14. First, welcome Jensey! Second, I'm really digging the great responses you've received so far and the enthusiasm of this particular thread. Having the safety class under your belt is a great start and getting your first gun/rig setup assembled is exciting! You're off to a great start. Though it sounds like you may have settled on a gun, I'd echo the "try before you buy" and "get what fits" thinking that have been previously mentioned.
  15. Having happened to you once, it's quite unlikely that it'll ever happen again because you are now so aware of the possibility. Six months may seem like a long time, but in that time, how many draw/reholster reps do you have with the Ghost? I use a DAA RM and on occasion, if the gun doesn't go in quite right, the lock will not engage - so it's a go/no-go type of lock. It took a little (several hundred reps) dry fire to really get a feel for it and know, with certainty, whether or not the gun was properly seated and if the lock could be successfully engaged. I would not engage the lock between strings shooting steel but you get the idea. Not having a Ghost, I cannot comment on the reholstering/securing/locking. If you don't have a lot of reps with it, maybe you might dry fire a little more to really get to know when the gun is properly seated/locked. That said, if you're set on switching holsters, there are several that you might consider and the CR Speed is one. You might ask around at the range and see what others are using and if they have something close to your M&P setup.
  16. Young Katelyn can certainly handle a shotgun (and everything else in the stage). I would have been flat on my fat ass by the third shot.
  17. Not a tax guy, but I'd say you have a legit beef with those companies. IIRC, 1099s are due to recipients postmarked not later than January 31st. On the like: not so much getting a refund, but I just did my taxes and I owe a very small amount due to the Fed and getting a small refund from State. it's so close it's nearly a wash. Hooray for my 2012 tax planning!!
  18. It's going to end up being a personal preference thing. The S&A, being steel, puts slightly more weight in the palm of the hand vs. the Dawson which is all aluminum. I guess one could run a steel MSH with the TechWell and this would put you at about the mid point for balance/weight. Personally, I have both the S&A and the Dawson and I don't notice the weight difference. I did drill out the inside of MSH section of the S&A though. I do like the huge opening of the Dawson. In comparison, the S&A is just big not huge. Oh and I hogged out the openings on both units.
  19. I tried to do a cartwheel like that and I think I hurt something...
  20. This type of information is useful to include for a gear review. It provides an expectation of what one might expect using the gear being reviewed. When comparing a bullet forward to a bullet out position, there's a noticeable difference with my wrist angle as I reach for and index on the mag. Not saying it' noticeable to all or that it makes any significant difference as long as there's lots of dry fire practice with the rig setup. It doesn't make a difference with the Ghost pouches in particular, you're limited by the belt attachment. I have them butting up against each other running them bullets forward... it was the exact same way when I ran them bullets out. Hadn't tried the Ghost pouches yet. I know with DA racers, and racemasters you can get them closer together running them bullets out. The DAA bracket is significantly narrower in comparison to others that I've tried i.e. CR Speed and Safariland. The DAA bracket itself is perhaps 1/2" wide in comparison to 1" to 1-1/8" or so for the others.
  21. Nice yard. That's pretty extensive retention testing . Were the mags loaded with dummy rounds to simulate real weight? Being an accessory geek, I would have liked: a close up shot of a mag in the carrier a description of how to mount it in the 90 degree position a description of the tension adjustment Playing Production and having minimal belt real estate (not saying that's me by any stretch), I can understand the desire to run carriers in the 90 if it allows closer placement of the carriers to minimise the need to reach around to the small of the back. I shoot Single Stack and six DAA SS Racers run all the way around back for me and my DAA 38" belt in the flat position. I'm considering changing some to 90 degrees because the mount would allow closer placement.
  22. Welcome! The Richmond Hotshots website here states that the class is a requirement to shoot a match at Richmond. Since it sounds like you have some match experience with TASC which is a sister club, I'd contact Bill Lepior the class instructor and ask. If nothing else, taking the class is a good review and includes a certificate for a free match.
