  1. I agree, I have been shooting for under a year and have read the book already 3-4 times. I have only taken a few classes and coupled with the book they make a great help. I have already moved up to A class in PD. Get the book, read it all, somethings you won´t get until you get to shoot a bit, then come back and re-read it, the learning never stops, especially around the mental game. Good luck and safe shooting.
  2. Get your gear on, put some real weight on the mags and practice for real, I drop every mag and use a timer to feel the adrenaline of a real match. One more thing: I practice sight on target - reload - sight on target. It´s what you need to do live so why waste time on anything less.. Yes - picking up every 3-4 reloads sucks, but its the price you have to pay
  3. Good, Good, Good.... I already see some names starting to show up on the Registered shooters list, looks like it 'ill be fun..... keep on signing in.
  4. Which ones are best: SVI or STI mags for this?, any real differences? I am ordering the tubes from Speedshooters. Sergio
  5. Carlos, thanks I live in Guatemala (Central America) but I purchase my goods in the USA and have them shipped to Miami and pick them up in any of my business trips, so I can order from anyone in the US, I don´t believe there are any other sources closer to me anyways... Mistral404, How do I contact Grams?
  6. I just got my first SVI Custom .40 pistol, and will start shooting IPSC Standard, same as USPSA Limited but has to fit in the box. I need to purchase reliable high capacity mags in both 126mm (IPSC) and 140mm (USPSA), who is the best source to buy these??, so far I have checked and confirmed with: a) benny Hill and Dawson Precision. Any advice on who is the best to go with?, I am looking for a minimum of 17rnd on the 126mm and 20 rnds on the 140mm. Is it the same to buy STI mags or do I need to specify I need SVI mags? Thanks Sergio
  7. Why shoudnt one use SG on the sear, hammer area?, I just put SG#1 on it and although I haven´t had the gun enough to tell you if it works or not I would like to know the possible down side of doing this, as I remember reading "...apply slide glide to anywhere where things come into contact..." Txs
  8. I like the tips... I was more worried about under doing it but apparently I am over doing it, i just want to make sure I don´t have a failure at a competition that can latter be traced back to poor cleaning. I don´t use naptha or brake oil, I have this gun cleaning compound I bought which has worked well for most guys over here (only I cant remember the brand, maybe outdoors..) EricW, how often is every now and then for you to break it down and freshen up the slide glide? I guess I might give it a thorough clean myself then to lube the sear/hammer/etc... I was thought yesterday by a friend how to assemble, disassemble the whole thing. BTW, I didn´t ask about the mags, what type of maintainance do these require?, I was used to the plastic glock mags only. Again, thanks. Sergio
  9. Got my new SVI Custom .40 Limited gun, just shot it yesterday (first 500 rnds or so), since its brand new I decided to take it apart wipe it clean and apply slide glide #1 to most everything (except firing pin channel), after reading several threads I intend to do the following for cleaning purposes (please advise if I am messing it up): 1. After each session, clean the feeding ramp of the barrel with a brush to make sure its clean and it feeds well. I do not intend to ever clean the inside of the barrel (its a Schuemanns) since I have read its best to leave them alone (I will be shooting Montana Gold bullets). I would take care of the exterior part of the hard chromed gun with a soft brush, towel and some Tri-Flo or other high quality gun oil. 2. After every 2K (aprox) I would intend to take the top end apart wipe it clean with a soft cloth, take off any residue I might find and use a soft brush and some de-greaser/cleaning compound, after this I intend to put Slide Glide #1 again on everything. 3. Maybe after every 5K-10K I would think of getting the gun to the local armorer to take it apart in every single piece and give it a professional clean, of course more slide glide afterwards. Does this sound like a good plan to you guys? or would you advise otherwise? Thanks
  10. As stated already Nicaragua is a nice country with lot´s of stuff to do, very friendly people and most of the people you would be in contact with speak some English so there shouldn´t be a problem in that area. Shred, I am sure we can come up with some very good ideas for entertainment, let´s wait and see the size of the group going to see what can we come up with that suits all of you. Cheers SR
  11. Again... I will start shooting my newSTI this week, and don´t know if I need a shockbuff or not, what are the ups and downs of using this?, so far a friend gave me one to try out, but do I really need it?
  12. Does anybody have the results from the Florida Open so far?, I am interested in Limited and Production results. Trying to find out how some friends from Guatemala are doing... Thanks
  13. I was wondering if any of you shooters are going down to Nicaragua for the Columbus Level III in April?. Is there a team from US shooters going down there?, I live in Guatemala, and a number of us are going and I am just wondering if I´ll get a chance to meet any of you guys from whom I have been learning alot from on this forum.
  14. In retro, I think I missed on the follow up, I was sure I had hit the plate and moved on to the next and consequently had to come back alot, this was the big are were I missed time. Also the fact of going again and again was weird, in IPSC if I go again you usually have a 5-10 min rest and other shooters go so you have time to re-think what happened on the stage, that did not happen in the SS, once you had a chance to walk back and re-think it was over. I am interested, what are your best times on these courses: 5 to go, Speed option and Flying M? Any dry firing drills that you can recommend. txs.
  15. I really dont care if she cant shoot, but she is very nice Even if she cant shoot I am sure she wouldnt have a problem getting any of us on the forum to teach her how to.
  16. I have been shooting IPSC for around 6months, I have moved up to A class in PD using my G17, and feel very confident with my performance in IPSC matches . HOWEVER last weekend I shot my first Steel challenge match, 3 stages (5 to go, Flying M, Speed option), and basically I SUCKED!. I couldn´t change targets rapidly and am very dissatisfied with my performance, I timed 5.1 on 5 to go, 4.7 on Speed option and 6.5 on Flyin M! Argh!!! Is there a different technique that needs to be used for Steel vs. IPSC, different thought process, etc... What type of dry fire practices can I do for this?, any suggestions, advice? txs.
  17. If you are shooting production, its probably because you like to just pick up the gun and shoot (No hassles with more complicated guns). I feel the GLOCK 17 is the best for this, it is a very reliable gun. In my club 90% of PD shooters use Glocks (mostly 17) and a few G22 (disadvantage). If you have any problems with the gun you can take the gun apart and replace the very inexpensive parts in a few seconds with help of just the glock dissasembly tool or any similar tool. Besides, it handles great, it has high capacity mags and its very inexpensive, the only thing I would do is replace the stock sights with Heine sights. If you want to go into a more complex situation get a 2011 and shoot Limited. I am just expecting my Limcat .40 and will let you guys know how I feel about shooting Limited after PD.
  18. Thanks to all, The probelm is cost is a disadvantage, I live in Guatemala and supply is limited, 1K of FMJ cost around $80, 1K of lead costs around $20. Huge difference, especially if you want to practice alot. I believe I cant change the barrel due to IPSC Production rules, so this I think is out of the question, unless this is not true and barrels can be changed. Duante, I am interested in hearing your recommendations for safely shooting lead. Is the only problem with the lead in the barrel due to the extra pressure? or is it also in the other parts (i.e trigger bar, firing pin channel, trigger, conector, etc..) Thanks
  19. Its the Glock factory barrel. Flexmoney, why wont you shoot lead through the Glock? Should extra care be taken to clean other parts of the gun, not only the barrel, such as the firing pin channel, pin stop, etc... Or will lead pretty much not accumulate there?
  20. In my G17 for Production I use Decal Grip - great stuff has been on for almost a year, no signs of wear and I dry fire every day. In my G23 I have a stippled grip done locally, very nice also Both are great, but I think the decal is better, in case you dont like it you just take it off, the other one is there to stay.
  21. I shoot my GLOCK 17 using the following: - Lead for practice and club matches. - Montana Gold JHP for more important matches. Also I apply Slide Glide #3 to it The thing is I really don´t clean my gun, all I do right after shooting is pass the bore-snake a few times, wipe of the dirt and sweat of the grip and slide and put it away. Is this fine for the Glock given I use alot of Lead or should I be more thorough with my cleaning process?. I have read some threads saying you shouldn´t bother cleaning the barrel and others say you should. Help would be greatly appreciated.
  22. BTW, what is the optimum weight for a limited gun 2011 in .40cal?. I dont have much experience in limited - I have been shooting my Glock and like it very much and I dont have to worry about the weight there. I am just moving to a limited gun (so I can shoot both, I dont intend to let my G17!). I have been reading alot about the lighter guns and dont know what to look for in terms of weight, any advice will be appreciated.
