  1. I don't think there is an easy answer: As an AM shooter last year who should make the cut by most cutoff scores I like the idea. If I did not make the cut I wouldn't be too happy. If I were a new shooter I would not be happy if previous shooters were given head of line, but I would accept this as I value loyalty. If I were a "TOP" shooter and I had to rely on the luck of a mouse click I would not be happy. I'm thinking the top 10-20 get in without clicking the mouse at the appropriate time and I'm OK with that, they have earned it in my book. Any first come first served system has its problems, internet access, speed and the atomic clock time. Mail is even worse; using the mail is the same as random draw. The answer is easy: just hold every match with the same stages 2 or three times so everyone that wants to shoot gets to. I think the big organizations/players, Rockcastle for instance, will make it a business decision; fewer matches=higher entry fees or more matches lower entry fees. I would see it as a pure business decision for them as to which generates more income. If things grow enough maybe MD and other positions would be paid positions at these larger matches? David E.
  2. Vlad, I looked at the JP/Lyman, if using the lyman inserts the post widths seem to be limited to .067 - .102 wide. .067 is wider than I have been using based on recommendations here to use .030 - .050 width posts based on the targets we shoot so the post does not cover the target. An alternative would be to sight in at 6 and just set the target on the post. I know there is one top shooter using/that used the lyman globe. The only time I wanted a globe was shooting in bright sunlight and had a glare issue on my front sight. I was not up to par on using a sight blackener at the time. David
  3. This thread (MarkCO, KellyN and others posts) has made me reexamine my decision to switch to TO from Irons. I like the challenge of shooting irons and to be frank I like beating optics guys when I can. The one rifle match and one 3 gun match I shot at the end of 2011 with an optic made me think I was much better with an optic. In hind sight that may not be the case, time to get back to practicing with irons. David E.
  4. MarkCO, Needless to say I agree with you on this. My experience has been at smaller/local matches where the number of iron shooters is 1-6 and where the raw times are not always avalable. If I new ahead of time that raw scores were not going to be avalable and I were shooting irons at a small match, I would rather shoot irons in TO. David E.
  5. I blew the entire match on that stage. -First stage of the day. -The sun was in my eyes. -My front sight clamp screw had backed out and was touching the stupid prop on the back of the car throwing off my shots. -Can't think of anything else right now but I'm sure I had other excuses at the time. At least when I was done crashing Bryan pointed out my loose front sight problem. Pro next year, can't wait. David E.
  6. Thanks all, Looks like I'll stick with the Glock. I think with everything else there is to think about in 3 GUN I'll just keep it simple. While its only a single point of info, I did watch Shooting Gallery yesterday, coverage of Lain Harrison (Top Shot winner) shooting the AR15 PRO/AM match. The only thing that gave him more trouble than his race pistol was his race shotgun. Maybe some day when I'm rich. David E.
  7. This will sound like a complaint but it is not meant to be. I shot irons last year (only one big match AR15 PRO/AM in AM, not an issue with this match as there were no divisions, it would have been nice to see where I stood with other limited shooters however) and the main reason I switched to TO is because of the % scoring system used. If I finish 2 of 4 iron shooters, ho hum. If time plus is used and I finish 4 of 60 Limited and TO shooters combined well then I'm way more happy. So for the most part I will be shooting TO except when I shoot a match where time plus is used and the targets are at least 4 MOA. I was on the verge of buying a Prismatic but for the same reason as irons I just went TO. I will always have my irons rifle with me just in case! David E.
  8. http://www.weaponevolution.com/forum/showthread.php?167-Mossberg-930-SPX-Review Post #12 goes into some detail on the different front sights used on the SPX. I'm a firm believer that is it more about the indian than the arrow as long as the arrow is workable. Mag capacity on a tube mag shotgun does not determine division, how many you put in the mag might. David E.
  9. I think the sun was in his eyes too! I think many of us understand your point having used firearms in the past for other than 3 GUN/competitions. I know I have a love of guns and I am competitive so 3 GUN and other shooting sports are my chosen "hobby". If you see firearms as something to be enjoyed, 3 GUN, skeet, trap, high power, hunting, etc. and not just a tool you might enjoy the shooting sports also. Thanks for the apology. Most of us are big boys and girls and will live. David E.
  10. I'm torn between describing my 930 as the "Tank" or "Glock Shotgun" as it has both those qualities. David E.
  11. So I have been shooting a Glock 34 for about 8 years. My knowledge of 1911s and 2011s is thin. What are the options for a basic (read low cost/reliable) double stack 9mm for 3 GUN. I shoot with some guys who seem to have made a step increase in their game when switching to a single stack 9mm 1911, IDPA SSP. I'm guessing it's the trigger and the weight. I'm trying to balance the potential gain with the cost. I did some searches but was hoping for some specific recommendations for 3 GUN. Thanks, David E.
  12. JKW, glad it worked out for you. I have installed them, for each shim you install under the recoil pad on the end of the buffer tube (which moves/adjusts the stock angle) there is a matching shim that goes between the stock and receiver to correct the alignment. I did go back to the original setup and think I need to lengthen my stock for a better fit. If I remember correctly, the pre-production on Benny's table at the AR15-Rockcastle PRO/AM model had no mag well porting. Hope the production model does, if not it’s easy to do. It might be a challenge to add the porting to the manufacturing of the reciever so if handworking was required that would drive the price up. David E.
  13. http://www.thegunsource.com/item/560824_Mossberg_Rifles_Shotguns_Mossberg_85119_JM_Pro_930_12ga_24_Synthetic_8_Shot.aspx Out of stock, at least it has a model number. Price 572.99 Can't build it for that. Looks like I will have 2 930s when this one comes out. From talking to Benny at the AR15 Rockcastle match, I think one advantage of this gun is a hard plating on the mag tube. David E.
  14. While I agree the credit goes to the "Man in the ring fighting the fight"; from an improvement standpoint some of the best ideas come from those with little experience in the area being discussed. With so few 3 gun matches and so many shooters, supply low/demand high, customer input/feedback doesn't carry much/any weight as long as the matches fill. I think most here know of at least one club/group that is or was running matches of some type that failed. If a club/organization fails because the customers walk away, then either customer input wasn't taken or acted upon. While I prefer some rules/scoring systems over others, I mainly just want to shoot/compete. All I ask is that rules be posted before the buzzer goes off and dont change before the scores are done. David E. Sorry I butcher the Man in the ring quote, didnt have time to look it up or give credit.
  15. Shot 2 pistol matches this past weekend. Strong side thumb still hurts from surgery and makes reloading a "Screaming" event. Hurts like !@#$% when push the mag ejector. The front sight flew off my G34 on stage 4 of an 8 stage match on Sunday. You can shoot a Glock pretty good at 45 degrees using the corner of the slide as a sight. For some reason my grip change caused some slide bit. I have my G34 setup with a slightly heavier trigger pull than normal to match my Advantage Arms 22 conversion. Practicing trigger control a few nights a week. Reloading 223 and 9mm, have about 500 rds 223 and 500 9mm loaded. Another 1000 223 and 1500 9mm to go before the season starts. Physical Training: Still pulling the tire sled 5 days a week 1.5 miles, shooting 22 pistol along the way at 4” steel. Weight 217, up from my low before the holidays, still a ways to go.
  16. The first 100 or so rounds through my 930 were a mixture of REM and WIN Wally world bulk packs. No issues from day one with any ammo. So it really depends on the individual gun. David E.
  17. I'm not sure what your goals are but pistol grips do not seem to be popular with to many shooters at the top of the heap. David E.
  18. Don't know about cutting the lifter. But since the lifter pushes the shell up in front of the bolt so the bolt can catch it and drive it into the chamber I would think the less modfiction to the end of the lifter the better. My 930, 24" turkey has always run everything from walmart bulk to slugs, no issues. David E.
  19. I use used hulls, fill with construction adhesive and a couple of .45 slugs. You don't need a reloaded, just push the open end in with your finger and finish filling flush with construction adhesive. I leave the spent primes in place, not using them to dry fire just loading practice. Been using the original 10 I made over a year ago from wall mart bulk in my Mossberg 930. Brass may last longer and even if you replaced them once a month they are way cheaper. David E.
  20. Name the time and place! Really Vlad, Anytime you want to give it a try let me know. Didn't know the first post was you. I was using it at the Coast Guard match. David

  22. I have been using one with the CM-R2 reticle for a few months. The good: true 1X, rugged, no separate mount, good optical quality. The bad: not daylight bright - 3x max (which I believe is just really less than 3x more like 2.8-2.9). I started with irons so 3X is like looking through the Hubble Space telescope to me. - Eye relieve is sensitive. I like it, the CM-R2 (BDC) reticle is simple and easy to use. It is designed for a 200yd zero using 855 (62gr) load but works well with most loads out to 400 maybe 600 on a Larue sized target. I have mine sighted in with Hornady Steel Match 75gr at 200yds. The illumination is not daylight bright, not really close. I rarely use the illumination and can easily see the reticle against most targets. I like it and have done OK in a couple of matches with it. David E.
  23. http://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/Products.aspx?catid=7458 Looks threaded.
  24. +1 on forget the Mini. The 3-12x42 is not seen by most as a good 3 gun optic if used alone. Many will sugest a 1-4 with daylight illunination. You must be able to shoot both eyes open up close and a scope significantly above 1x on the low end makes it harder, not impossible. For a starter AR; Any functioning AR with a good optic will get you started, 16" 20", no heavy barrels. Adding a COMP would be the next bang for the buck item. A McCluek can be had for $30.00. A trigger of your choosing would be next. Last would be a longer free float tube. A simple setup like this will go a long way. Research 3 gun optics before buying that 3-12. JP has a short and simple optic write-up. http://www.jprifles.com/1.6.3.php David E.
