PM9 all the way. I have one but there are probably a dozen examples at the range and all run...

.45 load to stay competative with 9mm guns for steel match
fastluck13 replied to Foxtrotx1's topic in 44/45 Caliber
You will never get it on par with 9MM for steel. That said, maybe get some 200 grain bullets and load them in the 150PF range and it will probably be pretty nice. -
I wish they wouldn't make the whole DVC line look like pimp guns. Double penalty for doing that to a single stack.

my match time is always a touch slower but produces less surprises than practice.
-
I don't disagree with the practice approach but there is something to be said with hanging it out there when it counts. It helps beat "being able to do it in practice and match results are slower and less accurate."

This, this, this. So much better that the velcro keepers.

Dillon 550 or 650 or Hornaday Ammo Plant
fastluck13 replied to bovine5088's topic in Miscellaneous BEginners
I have a LNL and have been very happy. Probably about 40,000 rounds through it so far and no complaints or broken parts. I agree the 1050 is the dream press though. I am certain someday one will be mine but in the meanwhile I have no desire for a 650. -
There are several...intro to steel, action shooting 101, and Tuesday Night Steel all are good places to start. there is a new shooter class every Tuesday at 6. Good guys and supportive of new shooters

Engaging Partially Obstructed Targets
fastluck13 replied to GorillaTactical's topic in Tips for Improvement
Minor vs major is the never ending battle. I shoot mostly single stack so I have spent hours thinking about that trade off. what I am saying is, look across the field of competitors and study where they make or lose time or points. You can learn a ton from being a bit of a stalker. Even more when you shoot a couple divisions and see what they are doing to get there.- 16 replies

That is strange. Never had anything like that before. Seems like they would have had high primers too unless their primers were shorter.

I have to be careful not to keep too many spare parts around because they grow into guns.
-
Yeah, that is a bit of a drive. Ben Avery would be closer. Prescott is also reasonable for you and nicer this time of year.

Engaging Partially Obstructed Targets

You can always benchmark against the other divisions too. Compare against open. How many seconds behind. Do you lose ground in points or time or both on the harder stages. You might find it isn't partials but harder shots in general. Hoser stages can mask a lot. Harder shot/thinking stages can really separate the top shooters- 16 replies

Lee Precision Classic Turret Press
fastluck13 replied to Snipe10's topic in non-Dillon Reloading Equipment
I used a turret press for years. It made very good ammo but was very slow. Primers also went everywhere. It also seemed to require a lot of attention to keep it running well. I use a Hornady LNL now and couldn't be happier this side of a Dillon 1050. -
The powder burn rate charts floating around online can be useful. Don't use them as a replacememt for a manual but if you find powder, you can quickly tell what it might be good for. Then check the manual for the caliber you have in mind

Engaging Partially Obstructed Targets
fastluck13 replied to GorillaTactical's topic in Tips for Improvement
You mention your scores on those stages but how do they compare to a GM? Is your percentage of the top shooters the same? If they are not dropping the points on the partials, you need to catch them. If you can't catch them on points, you need to be that much faster. How likely is that?- 16 replies

I have not shot Ben Avery as it is on the wrong side of town. Depending on where you are, Avery and Rio are good choices. People move to AZ to shoot Rio...just saying... Flagstaff, Tucson, Payson, prescott, Havasu, and Yuma all have matches too if you are outside of the valley.

Get the most expensive one you can swing! At least a 650. The speed and functionality are always nice to have.

PRG can be very hit or miss. Lots of matches come and go there. Feels very political and lacks real club support. When they do have matches they are friendly and generally run smoothly.

Thanks. I probably should have been more helpful but lazy got me this time

I bet that gun would have lived through it if it had less than 112k. I usually get sidetracked by a new gun long before that. You earned that new one. Now you need to use the frame to have a custom knife made

Solid. 50 yard popper or 25 yard paper with half no shoot?

Read your manual. There is process for adjusting the zero stop. I think it involves losening the turret cap and turning to give yourself more down adjustment.

The lee crimp dies are very easy to adjust (pistol and rifle) and do a great job. I know quite a few guys who had mystery reliability issues that went away with he pistol FCD.
