  1. whoa...havent that flat of a primer in a looong time....yikes...
  2. fondle and or shoot a bunch of em BEFORE you take the plunge to the dark side, its an expensive proposition to say the least, talk to the owners see how they like em, or not like about em??? understand its a CUSTOM piece that may or may not work out of the box right away(none of mine were plug an play) ammo??? again creating a load forthe particular pistol to run can be daunting, ive been shooting open for damn near 20 yrs andthere have been headaches butthen again there has been a hell of a lot of fun as well....ask a TON of questions before the wallet ever comes into play...
  3. back in the late 80's was the first time i saw a red dot affixedto a handgun( it was a aimpoint 1000 on an aluminum mount/grip panel combo on a .45) crude, but it worked, by 1990 we were tryin to mount(and keep working) the tasco PDP2's on our comp'd single stack .38 supers, the dots backthen were fragile and expensive(typical was 1 on the gun, 1 in the bag as a spare, 1 going back to tasco to be fixed and 1 coming back from them fixed, all at roughly 250 bucks per...) aimpoints got smaller and better and the tubless(c-more) hit the scene, the micr/slide riders came next, the optima from tasco was first??? nice but change a battery, gotta go re-sightthe thing back in, c-more's sts sort of solved that by having a slide out battery tray like was said before me, nice idea on a handgun forthe military, but how to carry??(holsters??) whatto do if and when the batts crap out(and they will be the lousy time to do it) and they are still fairly delicate, i doubtthey can handle bein tossed in the back of a duece and a half more than once...
  4. back before the increase in lead prices, the plated bullets were a nice 'stop-gap' between inexpensive lead, and the more expensive true jacketed bullets, now with the prices being what they are, might as well skip the middleman and go jacketed, im shooting up the last of my plated stuff from some 20 yrs back, once its gone, its on to jacketed
  5. my hat is off to you Kevin, for being a stand-up guy, this sport needs more people like yourself in it, some or most ofthe people new entering this sport dont realize that integrity is a major part ofthis sport as well as the competition... I cant remember the actual phrase word for word, but itgoes somthing like this...character is how you handle yourself when the camera's are off and no one is around...
  6. was goin thru some old VHS tapes of matches i had competed in, and on one stage there is my lightning(sic) fast draw to....wait for it....gun wiggles reach up and turn on the dot...then go fast...yeah i heard about that one for a while...
  7. an i thought i was the only one nutty enuff to buy a snubby .44 mag....hehehe yeah i have one ofthe lew horton 3 inch 629's and as was said, its really fun(sic) to load it out with gobs of 296 on a 180 gr JHP, for me the recoil is pretty nasty, the gun actually will twist in my hand, but have to admit, 'downloaded' a bit she is a very accurate shooter despite the absence of barrel length
  8. i used torun with a BIG range bag till i found that if i put in everything i wanted, i couldnt pick the damned thing up!!! time to trim the excess...i can pick it up, but it basically stays in the car if i need anything, after gearing up from the bigger bag, i carry with me on stages a smaller 'mechanic's toolbag' that holds my mags and ammo an score sheets, its a lot better on my back these days
  9. wow Bob, that is a nice an CLEAN bo-mar set-up on your xd...mine isnt as good, they didnt have the 'flat' design for the bo-mars when i decided to do mine on a Gen 1 G17, a LOT of material was taken off to make that dovetail cut on mine...oh well, live an learn
  10. I have had frame mounted tasco pdp 2/3's and C-more's and one time i pulled the C-more to put in a melted optima on the slide, and to be honest, the only problem that made me pull the thing off was the re-zero the thing everytime you pulled it off to change a battery....depending on how effective the comp is, there really isnt a whole lot of noticable difference between the two, like was said earlier, the slide ride may take more of a beating on the slide vs. the frame mounting...
  11. i melted a Bo-Mar back in the day on a gen 1 G17, cept now where the finish was milled away it tends to get rusty every so often
  12. welcome tot he wonderful world of action pistol competition, dive on in, the water is deep and is warm, some ofthe greatest people you will ever meet will be on the stages you shoot, an BTW dont be intimidated aboutthe skills and or equipment of other shooters, remember they once started out like you, and 1 otherthing, the only dumb question is the one you dont ask....enjoy
  13. longtime shooter from northern cali here, usedto do 9 matches per month, have slowed down a bit of late...check out Actionpistol.org for a listing of most if not all clubs in northern cali area, everything from USPSA to IDPA to steel challenge type shooting can be found there, and again, welcome to THE best action shooting forum
  14. the biggest problem people who transition from iron sights to a dot is that they still focus on the sight...with a dot its the opposite, you look at the spot you wantto hit, and bringthe dot/gun to it...other thing to remember(leastfor me) is to leave both eyes open and looking atthe target
  15. yrs ago att he lab i used to work at, itgot outthat i shot competitively, no big deal...one time i got hauled in to the HR's office for being 'overly demonstrative' twards a fellow co-worker, they felt that my attitude coupled with the known fact that i 'had guns' was a problem...i toldthem i hada problem withthem making inferences(wrong in this case) as to my preferred hobby
  16. any oil(pick one) and some 0000 steel wool rubbed LIGHTLY overthe offending areas has always worked for me in the past for surface rust and i dont store ANYTHING in a foam lined case
  17. I think the charge is more of an 'umbrella' charge they found to fit this particular incident, like others have said, im pretty shocked as to how the primers went off, assuming they were in an original box/pack??? gotta take a pretty hard blwo to get em to go off as a single let alone 'en mass' as caused by a hairspray can??? yup B.S. flag in the air...
  18. recently i chrono'd some loads for a friend of mine in a stock G23, and we gotthe loads down to the mid 700 fps range with the stock springs still in the gun, tho i will say this i noticed ejection was startin to go forward andright indicitive of needin a lighter spring
  19. welocme to the BEST(in my humble opine) competitive shooting forum, there is tons of information on these pages, rememberthe only dumb question is the one you dont ask...tho the reply might be 'the search engine is your friend'
  20. we had a gen 1 G17 as a rental at an indoor shooting range i used to run, it went 60,000 rds in 6 months and broke a trigger return spring....thats it...1 spring
  21. we learned early onthat drawing from any type of holster was hard on a gun's finish, for me, all my pre-2011 platfrom race blasters got a hard chrome lower
  22. also using the thumb high hold will give you more gripping surface to hang onto it with, with the thumb under approach 2 thing happen, as was said earlier, you can inadvertantly click on the safety, and the other is that using what i call a thumb over thumb grip, you lose a lot of gripping surface on the frame of the gun, go with a thumb high and you free up a lot of area of grip for your weakhand palm to hang onto and help you with managing(notice i didnt say control) recoil
  23. i dont shoot nearly as many matches as i used to anymore same with dry fire practice etc...even so back in the day where i burned 30k thru one in one yr i only replaced batteries in it once in the yr....guess i got a 'good' one??? the one that has a loose intensity knob has been off a gun for yrs an i bet i can go turn it on and it will still be somewhat bright??? which also begs the question of how often is it turned on/off??? are some of these extreme batt. useage happening because they are left on??? i know of more than one shooter that would tunr his on the first stage ofthe match and not turn it off till he bagged his gun to go home....me??? on at LAMR and off at ULSC...
  24. as i recall one or more higher level competitors have broken their ankles and or sprained their knee's goin over the 'rhodesian' wall as it was called back in the day... i 'like' the idea, but as someone already pointed out, go ahead and put it on this week/month's match andsee how many people you get the next time around...
  25. where we got alot of ours was some ofthe bigger food processers, ie. a salad dressing maker, a tomato cannery, that sort of thing, winery's are good as well
