  1. Thanks for the good word on Jimmy. He's not exactly "local," being about 250 miles away. What I save on shipping, I'd spend on gas. But there aren't many "local" matches to shoot around here. Since I have family in Breckenridge, I've gone a couple times this year, spent the night, and shot the match there. I like Jimmy. And being able to show him problems I'm having rather than trying to explain it over the phone, or being able to pick something up from him and go across the road and test it out . . . those seem like big advantages. I've been impressed with what I've seen of his work. (I have not used him as a gunsmith, yet. But I've seen his guns that some of the local guys there shoot, and more of his stuff when I visited his shop.) And yeah, I might have to get one of his backwards mag releases. On the other hand, HE doesn't like the Spartan. Something about the barrel he doesn't like. (I figure that as accurate as everyone says they are, what else do I care about the barrel?)
  2. That's one of the things I was wondering. Two sets of frames and slides made in the same factory, but possibly more attention to detail on one series than another? BTW, I was pretty much sold on the Spartan long before I started this thread. Just kicking around other ideas before I commit.
  3. Oh, I probably wouldn't take it off if it was already on there. I just wouldn't pay much, if any, extra to have it. Drift for windage, buy the right height and/or file for elevation and you're good to go. . . . Until you change your load, but that probably won't affect elevation more than an inch or so and windage not enough to tell it at the distances we usually shoot. That's where I think an adjustable would be handy, being easier to change if you change your ammo.
  4. STI being in Texas is a plus, from my perspective. Fixed sights are one less thing to break.
  5. STI contingency money is not really an issue. I've yet to win a local match. I've got about as much chance of winning something major as I do of winning the lottery. I win D Class when I'm the only D Class shooter there. This 9mm is just an intermediate step. I'm planning on spending more on a nicer .45 1911 a couple years down the road. At that time, the 9mm will be a practice (like instead of a .22 conversion), plinking, and occasional local match gun.
  6. I'm a bass player myself. (I never made any money as a musician, but I made my living in and around the music business for years, as a soundman, salesman, etc.) When I'm trying to learn an especially difficult piece of music, I'll slow it down, stupidly slow, well beyond the point I need to slow it down to play every note perfectly, to where I actually feel every note and get the nuance just the way I think it should be. I play it with a drum machine (becuase metronomes drive me nuts) and very gradually increase the tempo. I go faster and faster until I'm on the ragged edge and playing pretty sloppy. Then I slow it back down and start gradually increasing the tempo once again. Every time I read someone telling someone else to practice the draw slow, getting the grip and everything just right, and gradually speed up, I think of that. I'm still a noob myself and I've been working on my draw this way.
  7. Bobby is one of the guys I'm considering. (I've talked to him on the phone about a Spartan.) Another is to get it ready to go from Dawson. Jimmy Mitchell in Breckenridge is supposed to be a pretty good smith. I go there to shoot occasionally and his home and shop are right across the road from the range, so I could pick up/drop off stuff with no shipping there. Anyway I go, I'll probably buy the gun through one of these guys, with the mods I want already done. Jimmy is handy in case I need something tweaked a bit or later decide I want additional mods. Benny Hill, of course, seems to be the number one gunsmith recommended on this forum. He's another obvious option.
  8. I've been reading a lot about the STI Spartan, here and elsewhere, mostly very positive. This is the #1 candidate for my next gun. I know the Spartan's frame, slide, and barrel are made by Armscor, the rest of the parts, other than the rear sight (Itallian? LPA?) are made by STI and shipped to the Phillipines and all assembled by Armscor and then the pistols are shipped to STI for final QC. Rock Island, made by Armscor, appears to have the same frame and slide. Not sure about the barrel, but maybe? The RIA Tactical model also has an ambidextrous safety. (Ambi safety is not a huge deal to me, but there it is.) The Spartan comes with the adjustable rear sight. (Also not a deal-breaker for me - at all.) What differences are there between the two? STI parts vs RIA parts. I'm wanting this as an inexpensive full-size 1911 for USPSA Singlestack Division. I'm actually thinking 9mm right now. I'd have some minor modifications done right off the bat on either. Add a magwell. (I'm back and forth between the Dawson Ice and a more traditional looking S&A type magwell. Leaning towards the Ice at the moment.) The trigger will be replaced in either, because I want a short trigger. Trigger job, which may or may not include aftermarket trigger group components. Probably a Dawson fiber optic front sight. So, if I'm replacing stuff anyway, say I add something like the EGW Ultimate Trigger Kit, replacing the front sight negates the advantage of the FO front sight that comes on the Spartan. What benefit do I gain by getting the Spartan over saving a few bucks and getting the RIA? Yes, I know STI supports our sport. That's great. But I don't think that in itself is worth the extra $150 or so it'll cost me to have STI on the pistol. I doubt I'll see any contingency money, so that's not really a factor either.
  9. When I Googled it, I found this article, which I thought was interesting: http://www.pistoldynamics.com/MachineRest.html That's just the opinion of one expert pistolsmith, but it sort of confirms some things I was thinking.
  10. Thanks. I edited post #3304 to add you to the rankings.
  11. I agree with all that BerKim said. I used my Mini-14 in a rifle side match after our USPSA pitol match once. I did pretty good with it, but the furthest targets were at 80 yards. (They were little bitty plates out at 80 yards though. Looked like about 4", but might have been bigger. I was dinging them pretty reliably.) Everyone else was shooting ARs and my Mini held it's own. Yeah, the mag changes are slower. That's my biggest issue. They can be modified to be as accurate as an AR, but by then you've got as much money in it as you would spend on a nice AR, so unless you just really love the platform . . . I like the Mini-14. I had to sell mine, but I'll probably end up getting another one.
  12. For those really close targets, and/or when you're low on ammo, there's always the pistol bayonet.
  13. I worked in a gun store and we had a couple of those things. My co-worker was always wanting me to let him test it on me. He'd say, "Come on, the batteries are pretty old. It probably won't hur that much." And I'd reply, "The ammo in my pistol is pretty old. Why don't you let me test it on you?" We had a lot of fun, but I had to watch 'im. He was always sneaking up behind me with that thing and I was never sure if he was serious about trying it.
  14. Right. I think the "A" flag is to protect you from getting into a class in which you can't compete. Call them. It's my understanding that if you want it, they'll give it to you.

  16. Shot this today with West Texas Practical Shooters. Shooting Production. I went left to right. I missed the second popper and came back and got it after I shot everything else. Alpha-Charlie on the paper. 28 points divided by 7.22 seconds for a 3.8781 HF. ClassifierCalc.com has it at 33.4607%. CmCalc shows 33.4606341%. I've shot this thing in nearly every division now, twice in at least one. You'd think I'd have it figured out
  17. Not sure what you mean. (But it's pretty early in the morning.) Do you want them listed in order of classifier percentage rather than memember number? Sure, I can do that . . . later. Today is match day. Gotta go.
  18. At a local match, I don't think they should make the new guy go first. But you have no control over that. Where I usually shoot, we do the score sheet shuffle for the first stage. After that, whoever was first, is last on the next stage. Whoever was second is now first, third is now second, etc. If someone is at his or her first match and their scoresheet comes up first on one of the first few stages, that sheet is likely to get moved to the back and everyone rotated one slot forward without anything being said. If it's on the 4th or 5th stage and the newbie comes up as first shooter, the RO might ask if he's comfortable going first or if he'd rather let someone else go. Even at a shooter's second match, they won't usually make him go first on the first stage. When you're done shooting and targets are scored (let the others tape, unless you have a seriously small squad) and your brass is picked up (if I'm lucky someone else is picking up my brass for me because I did the same for them) then go do whatever you need to do as far as mag cleaning and reloading to prepare for the next stage. Right then. THEN get back into the helping tape and set. If you show up at the next stage and find out you're first, you can concentrate on your plan because everything else is ready. Pay attention when the RO reads the written stage description. Once or twice, I've been in the back of the crowd running my mouth during this, and then realized I was the first shooter and didn't really know what was going on. EDIT: JT said it. I could have skipped most of what I just typed if I had read his posts first.
  19. The first pistol match of any kind that I ever shot was a "concealed carry" match. It got me hooked. The club where I started shoots USPSA on the first Saturday of the month and Concealed Carry on the 3rd Sunday. Many of the same people do both. The same people run both. But they are two entirely different animals. I'm not sure USPSA could gain much, if anything, by absorbing these type of matches. And I'm pretty sure our local match would not benefit by being under the umbrella of USPSA. Any structured competition will soon be dominated by "gamers." That would ruin our CC matches. I'm not sure how it's been avoided, but it has, at least where I shoot. It's a great place for new shooters to come out and get their feet wet. The gun stores in town recommend these matches to their customers, so there are always fresh faces. It's simple and fun. It borrows from both USPSA and IDPA, but is neither. (I think it's probably closer to IDPA, but having never shot IDPA, I couldn't say that for certain.) The "rule book" is one page. No race guns, no race holsters, just real carry gear. Major and minor scoring similar to USPSA, but 9mm is minor while .40 and .45 are major. If you bring "gnat fart" low recoil loads, knowing that no one is going to be there with a chrono, you will be ridiculed. Divisions are single stack, double stack, and revolver. You must score 8 points on each target for it to be considered "neutralized." For safety, they don't allow cross draws or shoulder holsters. You're pretty much restriced to a strong-side belt holster.
  20. That's what I was wanting to know. It's cleaner in the first version. I couldn't get the bold and itallics, let alone the links, the way I did it the first time. . . . But people don't really need the links. Most know how to look that stuff up, once they are given the numbers. Yeah, there are a few posts in this thread I know. I just read them all. In fact, I was on about page 111 when I decided to make the list and went back to the beginning and came back through collecting all that.

  22. There are a whole lot of members whose numbers I haven't found. There could be more masters hidden in there, but probably not many, if any.
  23. THIS IS NOT MEANT TO REPLACE NEMO'S OFFICIAL ROLL. JUST SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION. Besides, I don't know if I'd want to keep up with it all the time. It was a royal PITA to put together. I have no idea why it comes out in funky colors when using the code box on this forum, it just does. Don't ask me why your name is a different color than someone else's. If I have your info wrong, let me know and I'll fix it. If I don't have your number, let me have it and I'll add it. If you don't want your number and scores posted to such a public list, let me know that and I'll remove it. GS1. GARY STEVENS L2133 B 67.43 67.43 1.
