We were taught at the factory on the proper use of our Barrett file to fit long ratchets to match the shorter ones. There was a tool available to peen short ratchets but I used that as a last resort. I never recommend filing ratchets by anyone who has not been trained. Usually ratchets are cut uniformly at the factory but can wear unevenly do to yoke alignment, yoke barrel not being square, the bearing surface on the recoil shield not being square to the bearing surface on the ratchet, etc.
A factory ratchet cutter is a target trigger with a steel bar welded to it and a cutting hand. Install in the frame with the cylinder stop installed along with the rebound & side plate/cylinder assembly, cut cut cut and you are done. Fitting revolvers is like watching cows being butchered, one is reluctant to have a burger for awhile.
