  1. Question 3 No, I'm usually 5-10 over the major power factor. We have several people are regularly suspect of being under thier declared powerfactor. Usually the people in question are master baggers. We have had people who I'm sure made major at home, but when they came to our range that was at 2000 feet higher in elevation they loose a couple points from thier power factor.
  2. Question 1 I'm with Ron, ban them from the sport. I wouldn't shoot at a range that condoned that activity. How many competitive shooting sports run a hot range? Polite Society. If someone felt they must carry a hot gun at a match they would probably fit in well with them. As far as being practical if you can get to a deeply concealed back up gun faster than you can load your primary gun your either damn fast on one or damn slow on the other. I wonder if a person who would carry a BUG in a match would carry one in a place where it is illegal? Question 2 I point out all scoring errors and penalties that are incorrect for good or ill for myself and others. I always give the benefit of the doubt to the shooter when I'm the RO.
  3. I use AET barrels too. They leave flute marks. It doesn't hurt the brass and it makes it easier to tell which brass is yours. I use 5.9gr of VV320 with a 155gr bullet for around a 173 power factor with no problems.
  4. There is a forum for the XD pistols; http://www.hs2000talk.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi I spent some time there checking out the threads on the XD, they seem to be good guns. I think there were some threads on trigger jobs. The only problems seem to be the slides are very prone to rust and the extractor. The guns do seem to be fairly complicated though. One other good thing I found out is the .40SW mags can be used in the 9mm and hold 15 rounds, the feed lips might need to be bent a little.
  5. I guess you need to understand that even among pro gun social circles even some behavior is objectionable. or If you don't feel safe playing with others, maybe you should just play with yourself... Just out of curiosity if you truly feel the need to carry that badly do you really feel safe carrying just a J-frame? If I carry 9 out of 10 times I carry either a Glock 27 or a 32, but if I reallllly feel paranoid I carry my old limited SVI backup gun that I converted to 9x23.
  6. Not a good idea at all!!! In addition to being a match DQ, I'm pretty sure you would be barred from the club. I can't believe someone would be so paranoid as to feel they needed to carry a back up gun at a match, and I would have reservations about being around them. I guess if you had some lunatic fringe tactical guy that made the die hard IDPA types nervous you might have a case, but you might be that guy... We do have people at my club that put on a carry gun as soon as the match is over and that is allowed, not liked, but allowed. I know I could get my limited gun up and running faster than I could get to a deeply concealed backup gun, have more ammo for it. and be a hell of a lot better with it. As far as always carring a gun there are a lot of places you can't legally carry a concealed weapon and if you get caught in all likely hood you'll never legally carry or maybe even own a firearm again. As far as cheating goes your only real competition is yourself. You may get a better match score, but you won't have a true representation of your abilities. You will doubt yourself when under pressure.and your self image will be built on a on a poor foundation. Gaming is a battle of wits between you and the stage designer. If you game a stage and it works then you have completed a succesfully stratagy exercise. If the stage designer doesn't like people gaming his stages he will improve his stage design skills and everybody will be better off for it.
  7. I have a CZ75 and I owned a Baby Eagle. Buy a CZ, get a better gun for less money. Maybe they fixed the problems with the Baby Eagle, but you couldn't give me one. I really hate the gun that much. I wouldn't want a gun that I couldn't get any factory support on. FWIW I got rid of mine for $200 and I felt like I cheated the guy. I think the CZ is the best bargain out there, the only stock gun I have that is more accurate is a HK .45 USP Expert.
  8. I hate that the toliet paper thread got locked before Rhino explained how to use the sink as a bidet.
  9. I had one of the baby eagles in .41 ae. Run away! Run away! It was the worst piece of junk firearm I've ever owned or shot. It jammed ever two or three rounds and was horribly inaccurate. I sent it back to the factory, (or distributor), twice and they never fixed it. It was the gun that made me quite buying the "gun of the day" that the gun mags were praising and start buying the classic guns they were comparing the new guns to (Browning HP, CZ75, 1911, Sig, and even Glocks). I traded the baby desert eagle in on a Browning high power and was never happier.
  10. What do you call a homicidal maniac in the cubicle next to you? A co-worker.
  11. I did not like the tub when I first saw it, but after using it I changed my mind. I would like a small syringe, like the one Wilson's grease comes in with a top that you give a half turn to when you wish to dispense it. A small tube like Loctite would be nice for use on the range. As far filling the syringes product dispensing isn't a very difficult thing to do, SG in it's grease form would be harder to do on a small scale, heated to a liquid state would be easier. For small scale use many of the things used to produce candles could be used to heat and pour SG into a syringe. Most tubes like loctite are filled from the back side, not the cap and the ends are sealed with a ultrasonic welder. The Dukane welders are the ones I'm most familiar with but they're expensive.
  12. At our local matches average 15 to 20 yards on paper and steel. We never see paper closer than 10 yards unless it's a classifier. At last Sunday's match the only paper at 10 yards was an array of hostage targets you had to shoot through strong handed to 15 yard paper targets while seated. We frequently see 25 to 35 yard targets. over 50% of the shots are on steel. The other really fun thing is a lot of the steel we shoot at is 4"-6" steel plates because the club gets them for next to nothing. We get 50 yard steel too. The match director is very accuracy oriented and shoots minor with an open gun. We have a lot of people that show up for one match never to return... well they show up for the IDPA match.
  13. I'm not sure where your slide is lightened, I seem to recall you posting about it being around the ejector, you might possible be able to get a plug that is the same size and shape as the metal that was removed press fit into the slide. The plug could possibly be pinned in place if nescessary.
  14. I'm with Eric W on this one. Bowl feed it all the way. A few months ago there was some discussion about automating a 650 press and I've had a few ideas as to how do it. The vertical cycling is easy, I can think of three easy ways to do that without even trying. The bullet feeding is a little more involved. I would get another case feeder and machine a plate to feed bullets instead of cases. I would then have the cases feed through the die hole where the powder check would be and make a spring loaded escapement to feed bullets through a die head. I would either have a pin that contacted the escapement and released the bullet or make a toggle type escapement and let the case activate the escapement and release the bullet. A pneumatic pick and place would be simple but would consume a lot of air and the cost of the cylinders and valves would be expensive ( maybe just one rotary?).
  15. I've personnally never stippled a grip, I'm more of a epoxy and 120 grit silica carbide man myself, but a friend of mine who does stippling uses highly polished punches. I've always wondered if a mold release compound would work.
  16. The general consensus appears to be those that have guns with hybrid ports like them. The trade off is more recoil and blast for a flatter shooting gun. This is what I’ve been led to believe by talking with people and reading posts in the forum. I was just wondering when the performance of the gun was optimized to the point that any further tinkering was futile. I took my new gun out for a test run this weekend to function test it. As far as felt recoil I could not be happier. I could barley notice it all, blast yes, recoil no (I am blast sensitive, flip hating but recoil oblivious). With a light grip (not trying to physically control the flip) the dot would track from the center of the A zone to about two inches below the top of the A zone at 15 yards. Using my normal grip at 15 yards it just kind of wiggles around. Going wide open I was shooting 6 shot 2-inch groups. If I can do that are hybrid ports worth the trouble? My general feeling at the moment is I’ll put the cuts in the slide for the ports, shoot the gun for a while, and add the ports latter if I decide I need them. The gun is a strange little animal, so maybe I should describe it. It’s a long wide frame / dust cover cut back to commander length with a threaded AET bull barrel, three sided cut slide and a 4 port comp. Think IMMI with a wide dust cover and you get the idea. After shooting the gun I feel like the additional weight might have made hybrid ports unnecessary, it may also be soaking up some of the recoil. I have shot other guns with hybrid ports, but unfortunately I’ve never been able to do a side-by-side comparison with nearly identical guns. I am planning on performing a comparison this weekend with a friend’s SVI, which has a couple of hybrid ports.
  17. I’m trying to decide if I should put hybrid holes (Popple holes, TJ holes) in a new open gun I built for myself. I was wondering what the other forum members want to see as far as dot movement and felt recoil. Are there any clues or benchmarks to judge an open guns performance by to tell you when you’ve got it right? I’m just not sure what I should see and feel with an open gun.
  18. My Asolo boots have worn great. My inside uppers lool fine, but where I hike the terrain is rock, topsoil, and mud. I've started buying most of my outdoor gear from small American manufactuers. My favorite backpacks are the Osprey packs. I'm getting ready to order a Cold Fusion soft shell from Beyond Fleece for fall / winter shooting,. Thier products are custom made to fit you, garanteed to fit, and tons of options. I can whole heartily endorse thier products. http://www.beyondfleece.com/
  19. It's nice to know I'm not the only hiking boot fanatic. The Asolo 520 boots are the best I've ever owned or tried. I think I'm going to get a extra pair before someone makes it "New and improved".
  20. The middle finger of the leaf spring if not chamfered will ocasionally slide past the angled part of the disconnector onto the flat part and act as a clamp and pin the disconnector to the trigger bow. Take a file or a stone and break the sharp corner at the tip of the spring. The length of the chamfer is dependent on the lenth of the spring leg in question. A way to test if this is your problem is to take the slide off of your gun, take the grip safety off your gun ( so you can see inside), and not fully install your main spring housing just enough to put a little tension on your hammer and leaf spring. Once you are to that point you can push the tip of the disconnector and watch its interaction with the leaf spring and see if its being held by the spring. Sometimes you need to use a small punch to push the disconnector in a little below the surface.
  21. Did you remember to put a 45 degree bevel on the tip of the middle leg of the leaf spring? Not putting a chamfer on that will cause a trigger to stick.
  22. Way to go Erik !!! I finally just started breaking the one second barrier myself, but I had to do tons of dry fire practice for months and just kept hammering at it. I just kept at it until I figured out a lot of the little nuances of it. I did notice my progress was little bit steady progress and some jumps as I figured out some of the technique. FWIW I did have a mental block after I had the technique, I had the block for awhile but I broke through it one evening in one of the jumps. Enjoy the little victory!!!
  23. I dumped a mag at my first major match when I picked my limited STI off a table. I replaced the spring with a stiffer one and it helped. About a month later I happened to put a SVI mag in my STI and I found that I could push down on the gun and the SVI mag wouldn't come out of the gun. It comes out easily when the button is pressed, it just requires more travel than the STI mag does. No more worries about dumping a mag for me!
