  1. I have plenty of mediocre glass, actually, this one piece of high quality glass is replacing 3 "lower end" scopes...and that is exactly my purpose... Right now I am looking at the ADM low quick release mount, or the Warne quick release rings, but I want to get scope and rifles together and measure before I order... Does anyone besides ADM make a low profile QR mount?
  2. So I have this idea, its probably bad, but here goes. I have this really nice 34mm tube scope, that I want to use both on a bolt gun and a 308 AR The bolt gun has an EGW 20 moa rail and an adjustable cheek pad, and the AR has a DPMS high upper receiver. My idea is to get a nice set of QR rings that are compatible with both rifles, since they're both full Picatinny rails, and set it up in such a way that I can remove the scope from one and put it on the other. Obviously I'll have to zero on each and then note what scope adjustments I need to make when switching back and forth, and I realize that two quick release rings are never going to be as rock solid and repeatable as say a one-piece mount, but on the other hand it's not like I have an extra 3 Grand to buy a second one of the scopes for something can I shoot a couple of times a year. So, does this seem like a workable plan? As a follow-up, can anyone suggest a good reference for what height rings I need? It doesn't seem like every ring manufacturer rates there products the same so it's very hard to compare.
  3. I run 2 PCC's, a Bazooka AR45, and an ATI 9mm. The 9mm wears the $19 ebay muzzle brake that I saw discussed on here, and since I put it on, no problem, plenty of souund for normally calibrated timers. The .45 is an odd thread (olympic .45 upper, 5/8-24 NOT 5/8-36) and I have never found a .45 brake for it so it still has a standardish FH and I average about 1 out of 5 stage reshoots, and stand and deliver classifiers don't matter.
  4. Shoot every match that you can. I have run everything from 52bthp to hot 308s and while 308 is the king, 75-77's are not too shabby, and I think maybe a bit more accurate...
  5. Drill very carefully, put tape over the spot, run a vac while drilling, use gloves and do not breathe the dust. Use a scotch brite to clean up the hole. CF splinters REALLY suvk.
  6. I don't run open much at all, since I never have had the equipment for it, and when I did it was usually me running tac-ops gear with an open pistol. Now I have an open pistol, and a mag fed shotgun, so I am considering re-configuring a rifle with a bigger comp and actually using the wings on this RAMP mount to mount a dot. My question is about optics. It seems that most of the advice I have seen on here trends to advocate for a lower top end and lower magnification range. This had me looking at scopes from 2-7x to 2.5-10x. Then I noticed that for a few dollars more, vortex makes a fine looking 3-15x ffp that would seem to make the rifle more versatile yet, while covering the same basic range as the 2-10 only with the ability to go to 11... So, without using the word "need", why wouldn't I want to choose the 3-15?
  7. LOL, a couple of matches were allowing any USPSA major (limited) pistol, only downloaded to 10 rounds... I have shot matches where ANY 30 cal (including x39 or carbine) was allowed... Actually, I don't think I have ever shot 2 three gun matches in a row that used precisely the same rules.
  8. Well, I will say there are alot less opportunities for sponsors and accessories in HM... Nordic, RCI, Taran, Salient, Leupold, Vortex, Tooth and Nail, Arredondo, none of them can help a He-Man shooter. The only glimmer of hope is HM does have it's own match: http://heman3gun.webs.com/ and some of us will continue to shoot the class wherever we are allowed, all while listening to the lamentations of the lesser beings that aren't tough enough to play... I remember back when USPSA was only limited and open, and the pansy little glock shooters sneered that they had 17 rounds to my 8... then their mags got banned, so they had to create new classes for the whiners (Limited 10 and eventually Production) so they could still play... Even now, I shoot PCC with a .45 ACP even though I don't get any credit for it...
  9. It's supposed to be hard. He-Man / Heavy Metal is about as close as 3 gun can come to a spec-class where everyone is shooting as close to the same equipment as possible. It's a .308 battle rifle with a 20 round magazine and open sights, its a SINGLE STACK 1911 style 45 with 8 rounds in the mag, and it is an 8 shot max PUMP 12ga, with no reduced recoil loads allowed. Think of it like a Baja race, sure there are trophy trucks and bikes, and ATVS and god knows what, but there is also a class for almost stock VW Beetles with alot of rules and restrictions. Want to run something different? Fine, but you cant run the bug class with a golf or a rabbit, only a bug. Just like single stack in USPSA, the rules are there to limit the shooters to as close to the same equipment as possible. Want to shoot a .40 or a .357 sig? Great, do it in tac-ops. The whole reason for classes in the first place is to put competitors with similar equipment together. Personally I hate all of the "concessions" that some matches put in place (ANY .45, 10 round mags, double stack mags, no restriction on tube capacity on shotgun, allowing red dots on the rifle, etc.) but I understand why they are used. Putting Heavy Metal and Heavy Optics together just because they both have heavy in the name is the worst of all. Heavy Optics is Tac Ops, with a big gun, it's NOT heavy metal...
  10. I wear a head mounted camera, and it sees what I miss. For example, if I have a jam, I don't always analyze what was going on, I just clear it as fast as I can and go on. When I go back and watch the video I can see what actually happened (sometimes). I also use it for a basic critique - I need work here, I messed up that reload, that was a great shot, whatever. Head mounted video is also more immersive than just telling someone about a match. It lets them experience more than a static description, but from the non judgmental zone of their own iPad. I have had several shooters go from "I don't want to embarass myself" or "I'm not good enough" to "Wow, that looks like fun" after showing my videos, especially when I mess up...
  11. Considering that I was the c class shooter from my example, I was trying not to rub anything in...
  12. Any stage design that tries to punish one group of shooters is a bad stage design. I shot single stack for years with stages requiring 10+ rounds from shooting positions, and it sucked them too.
  13. LOL, tell that to the open shooters at our club that are PISSED at the PCC guys for whooping them every week. When an average C class shooter can pick up a PCC and hang with A class open guys, there are bound to be hard feelings. The combined match results for last week had 8 PCC in the top 10. The number one PCC (c shooter) smoked the next fastest guy (A class open) by over a second... on a 13 second stage. This is small weekly club matches, not nationals...
  14. At my weekly match, our Stage designer / MD absolutely HATES PCC with a passion normally reserved for criminals and democrats. EVERY start is stock on belt AND muzzle on X, and the position of the X is usually such that PCC shooters are farther away from any shooting area than the pistol shooters would be. For example imagine an 8' wide barricade with a port in the center, and hands on X's on either side of the port, so the shooter is more or less centered on the port. The PCC starting position, however, is stock on belt, over pointed at X on the EDGE of the barricade, requiring the PCC shooter to move 3-4 feet upon the start signal... not all starts are that blatant, but it's about 50/50.
  15. For me, I start on either the right or left shoulder (2 O-clock or 10 O-clock) and plant there and wait for the targets to come around. It's not the fastest, but the most disaster-proof. I have shot 2 targets and locked open, been able to reload, and come back up in the same position and, like magic, there are the targets.... the problem I have with the top to bottom version is the disaster factor if you miss, or worse yet, miss, then hit...then the blasted thing is spinning fast and unevenly...
  16. Ooh, OOh, I know this game!!! it's called lets detail all of the ways we have found to break our stuff...I am a MASTER at this... LOL.! 30-40-50 round PCC mags do tend to exhibit a certain amount of torque on poor unsuspecting pistol pouches... I have ripped a couple of pouches clean off the mount with long mags. Especially those grease gun mags, they are HEAVY!! I have also goobered up the angular adjustment on a safariland mag pouch.
  17. I have one Lancer and several Nordic's. The Lancer I bought because I had a gift certificate, and it does look cool, but it is on a "pretty" shotgun that will never see a 3gun dump barrel. I bought the Nordic's with my own hard earned coin, and when I am looking at shotguns the only tube I would consider besides Nordic is RCI. Nordic is also the gold standard in Customer service and supporting the 3 gun sport.
  18. Er, I was working, LOL, the few minutes I had on my lunch break when I did come see you Friday were your lunch break too, so I didn't want to bother you. Heck, I didn't even get lunch at all Sunday (not that I don't have enough stored reserve). OTOH, you are here now...
  19. There are a lot of threads on how to tune the ammo to make the PCC run good, but here's my question. If one were to pick a factory ammo, say Winchester White box, and tune the gun to that ammo instead of trying to tune the ammo. This isn't really a hypothetical for me, I hate loading 9mm with a passion, so I typically run whatever wally world has the cheapest. I have learned a few things about my PCC and factory ammo. First, if I want to shoot the aluminum CCI or FED ammo, I need to add one of those inserts that bridges the gap between the mag and the chamber as upon feeding, the edge of the chamber hits the side of the case before the case head is centered on the bolt and makes a sort of a stretch mark. This causes jams about every 20-25 rounds. Steel case ammo is better, and much lighter (faster follow up shots) but it is dirty (surprise, surprise) not only after firing, but out of the box there is a dust or film on the cases that you have to clean the heck out of or it will cause jams. Think rounds with sand included... Tumbling fixes this, and I discovered tumbling the rounds with a bit of case lube slicks them right up, almost as nice as brass, kinda like red AA hulls. I run mostly WWB, from the 100 round packs. and it does seem to be an awesome value, being not much more costly than the aluminum or steel, but with none of the drawbacks. The only complaint is it is hotter than the other options, thus I get more recoil and movement. Overall, if I were going to try to tune this gun to any specific ammo, the WWB would be it. So, how would I do it? Starting with a Stock ATI 9mm, what can I do? I have replaced the stock FH with one of the ebay JM clone comps, and while it does not seem to make much difference on the recoil, it is loud enough that all of my shots get picked up now. I assume a different spring/buffer/bolt are going to be in my future, but there are enough options out there to give me a headache.. Any suggestions on where to start?
  20. Nothing personal but I don't really care what those USPSA pansies do over there... ROFL. IMHO, He-Man is an IRON sight 20 round 308 battle rifle (no 1x BS or space gun sights), a 12ga. 8 round max pump (no extended tubes past 8 rounds) and a Single Stack .45ACP 1911 with 8 round mags (no doublestacks, 10 round mags, polymer or nonsense), Period. I am a purist when it comes to He-Man class. He-Man is supposed to be hard. I would like it to return to as close to a spec-class as possible. I understand that match directors can run any rules they want, and relaxing the rules allows for more participation, but I don't have to like it. I suppose I could relax the rules enough to allow a delta elite in 10mm, but still only 8 rounds in a mag...
  21. OMG you guys are costing me SOOOO much money. I wonder if I could trade my 9mm PCC in on a tavor...
  22. I mounted some Blade tec pouches on a safariland paddle with a dropped offset adapter in the middle so my basepad isn't in my armpit... For my .45, at first I was using P90 mag pouches, but they sucked, so I mounted a pepperspray pouch on a tec-loc. I found that a couple of rare earth magnets on a tech-loc work just as well.
  23. I imagine I will find out if I have that ability at some point...LOL.
  24. So I got a new shot gun, a SRM 12-16. I bought it because I wanted one and because it is cooler than the other side of the pillow. I don't really have any designs on using it for 3gun other than I feel that ANY gun should be reliable and operable well enough to be used in a match. This isnt instead of the m2 that everyone seems to be trying to talk me into, just something new. First off because it has a removable mag and a rail it's pretty much an open shot gun. Although an argument could be made if you downloaded the magazine (like a production gun) and only had one that you could at least comply with the spirit of tactical optic shotguns. But assuming that I just run it in open, I think that it should do ok if I do my part. Question one is chokes, it has none, and appears to be straight rifled (no twist). That seems to preclude any screw in choke, so the choice seems to be either an external like a c-lect or a mossberg tankbrake. I think that the tank brake would look cooler-- which is,after all, the point. Am I missing any option? Second question is that I think I want a picitanny rail mounted match saver, does that exist?
