  1. What I did for me and my daughter was shoot a 20 round group at 10 or 15 yards with each backstrap. It didn't make any difference which one felt better. I liked the medium, my daughter liked the small. We both shot best with the large, my daughter dramatically better. You might try that.
  2. Anyone else had a piston come apart? Mine did after about 1000 rounds. Clean brake under the second metal ring. From the carbon it looks like it ran a while after it broke although I don't really see how it could. Anyway it started having ejection problems at around 35 rounds as usual. That piston sure was not very thick under the snap ring. edit. I have decided to go a different direction. I will get the piston replaced and get the 712 on classifieds this week. Has a Nordic 3 round extension with 1.5 cap which allows 8 in tube.
  3. Red 3M Scotchbrite, will try. Thank you for the explanation.
  4. Thanks Kirk, ports are stock, today I took one coil off the spring. Mag tube is nice and slick. Cleaned up with Flitz real well. Piston seems all right. Is the fairly tight fit in the barrel sleeve normal? And do I need to open ports a bit? And no condensation. Thanks
  5. No seems smooth on both the inside of the piston and the action bar. At 750 rounds it is getting toward the end of the probationary period. Its going to have to run more than 50 rounds before cleaning. Yesterday at the 3 gun I launched my mag spring in the woods never to be found in a pour rain. That was after a gosh awful stage where the RO was handing me tools during the course of fire trying to pull out a double feed stoppage. I am prepared to drill, cut or whatever at this point. Would like to get it running but not married to it and not going to live with it all summer. Also trigger work. Anyone got details on how to make the trigger lighter? I have polished with 400 and Flitz with some improvement but not enough. Thanks all.
  6. So on your 712 utilities is your piston pretty tight in the barrel. My piston even when clean will stay firm in the barrel sleeve. When dirty takes some force to push it out. After 50 rounds or slightly less I start getting failures to eject and other malfunctions. Oddly enough after cleaning I always get one failure to eject in the first magazine. After that it runs fairly well up to about 50 rounds where I start having frequent problems. About 750 rounds down range. Suggestions?
  7. Taylor Freelance no question. I get 23 in my 9mm. 24 with a barney.
  8. I use that Lowe's outdoor step grip tape on the front of mine. It does not make it a lot bigger but it feels a lot bigger. Really locks my grip in there. It is now the only place I use grip tape. Cheap to try, 10 bucks buys 10 lifetime supply.
  9. No problem either, are you sure you are not releasing the mag release too soon?
  10. Bummer, second one I have heard of that broke a hammer. Good luck.
  11. Dawson will know or you can measure your current one and order the same size.
  12. Yes, inside of forearm. A pic of the inside of the forearm would show you where I have been sanding, then dremeling and then dremeling some more all to zero apparent affect. The pic is after 350 rounds. I really thought it was the spring but after I worked it over with Flitz it is pretty smooth. I put in a new bolt release magazine tube retainer mechanism and shot it today. Ran 25 rounds through pretty much as fast as could and man this thing can run fast. I got to have my wife video me. I think I can get 4 empties in the air at the same time. I noticed before I put it in that the spring holding the magazine block in place was quite a bit stronger. Loading the mag tube after installation-- big difference. When this thing runs it is awesome.
  13. Winchester=Satan, got it. Both mentioned were Remington.
  14. Thanks, sshultz. The CZ smith said the lifter was suppose to ride on that mechanism. Getting a bit frustrated. Pulled the bolt release button and checked for shavings behind it. No go. I've been exchanging emails with the CZ gunsmith who has been very helpful. I sanded then later dremeled the inside of the guard in a effort to do away with the shavings. No go. I polished the rough spring with flitz and the magazine tube. No change. I am surprised after 350 rounds I am still getting as many shavings after shooting--and they get everywhere. The last time they was one chunk in the magazine cap. So last week took it for a 100 round sporting clays course. I did make 2 changes when I should have made 1. I put back in the stock bolt handle on the outside chance it might be causing the problem and I changed ammo. The ammo was because Wally World was out of the 1 1/8 oz Federals so I shot the 1 oz instead. The good news is I did not experience any double feeds in the 80 rounds I shot. The bad news is on round 5 and two or three more times I had a failure to feed where the bolt locked back and a round was laying on the lifter. At about 50 rounds I started having frequent failure to eject with the spent round hanging in the ejection port. I oiled the chamber and bolt area to no effect and put it in the truck and pulled out the 1100 to finish. The CZ gunsmith has sent me a new bolt release mechanism which I put in yesterday. I plan to run another 100 rounds through it as soon as the blizzard lets up. If I have problems it is going back to CZ 1 time. The gosh awful trigger is much better and it shoots and patterns very well. Very handy and light but it's gonna have to run.
  15. So took it apart and took the bolt release shell stop out to see if there were shavings behind it hinking stuff up. No shavings there but did notice that the lifter is touching the back side of the shell stop/release button enough to prevent it from dropping when pushed up by my finger. For those with a 712 does yours touch and or hang up. I have the bolt out in the picture but do not think it would matter. Thanks.
  16. These malfunctions started AFTER 125 rounds of Fed 3 dram 1 1/8. It is intermittent but happens almost ever magazine full (5) rounds now. I wonder if it is related to the shaving. I think it is from the handguard because they are black. Shooting red Federals and they have been working fine when I had good lube. Tried Eezox to see if it would run dry. Did fine for about 40 rounds then started intermittent failure to eject empty. FP10 keeps it wet much longer, of course. The Double feed. It is fairly straightforward. Empty ejected, live round under the extractor nose tipped down about 30 degrees. Second round has left the magazine and is between 1/2 and 2/3 of the way out of the magazine. The nose of the round on top is pressing down on the round coming out of the magazine and bolt is forward maybe 1/4 of the way to full battery. Maybe less. In an AR it would be drop the mag and shake shells out. This jam is a bear to clear. Sure not gonna be fun under the clock. Thanks a bunch for trying to help me figure this out. I will try to shoot later today and will take pics. I sure hope I get it fixed and have no pics to take.
  17. Yeah, me too when it was new. Now about 200 rounds, little less. I also have a ton of what looks like plastic shavings when I pulled the handguard off. I they are thin and look like the polymer furniture. This has happened after every shooting (3Xs). The spring is rough and looked like it might have been contacting the bottom of the handguard a bit. I lubed everything up with CLP the last trip out including the inside of the handguard. I can't imagine whatever is rubbing would be related to the double feed problem.
  18. Shot another 50 this afternoon and had several double feeds. I was shooting poppers in a row and working on speed so may have well been pulling the trigger before it had got back in battery. Anyone had this malfunction in a 712 and do you think I have the right diagnosis? Have the plug out but no extension yet. Seemed to no double feed when I slowed down a bit. Thanks.
  19. I appreciate they respond to customers questions. I am pretty stunned at the limited numbers produced given the popularity of the M/P pistols and the .40 caliber in general. I guess they are a much smaller player than Springfield and not as popular as I had thought. Who would have thought it?
  20. Mine happened about 400 rounds after a trigger job done by a previous owner. Very odd. It worked then it didn't. I was advised to put in a RAM. No joy. I then took to a smith who replaced the trigger and trigger bar. He said the other one was bent. I suspect it was intentionally bent in an effort to give it a shorter reset and once it wore in a bit it began the dead trigger problem. However it could have been inadvertently bent during a cleaning I suppose. I have shot 5K through it since the new trigger and bar and it has worked fine.
  21. I also tried 147's but did not like the recoil with VV 320 when I loaded it to minor pf. Below that they were nice. Loaded to minor pf or above I much prefer 125's. I am a recoil wus. This was out of a 4.25 M/P
  22. Thanks, sshultz, worked slick. I did try to load one on the lifter and one in the chamber. It didn't like that too much. Was the only failure to feed I had all day. You don't happen to know the thread measurement of the front bead do you? Ran 50 Federal 3 dram 1 1/8 Wal-Mart loads ran fine both with the Nordic prototype bolt handle and without. I think that bolt handle is going to be a must have for anyone that has the CZ. It just takes the pain out of racking the bolt.
  23. Got my 712 today. Bone dry. Little disappointed in the plastic to metal fit. Metal finish was very good and if it runs I will be pleased. I am a long time 1100 shooter and am unfamiliar with CZ system although it looks very much like the FN which I have shot but not messed with much. Question. How do you load with the bolt closed and one on the carrier or lifter with a full magazine. I can do the bolt closed one on the carrier deal but can not figure out how to top off the magazine. Thanks.
  24. Only when Magazine was seated with undue force on first round. Never in the middle of a magazine.
  25. Likely you will not. But if you had disconnecter trouble or wanted to put in Apex's disconnecter for a better trigger pull you would have to take it off. You will just have to heat it up to release the red. A solder gun is a common method for heating things up like set screws.
