  1. I crimp anything thats going to feed a semi auto. As previously stated, it prevents bullet setback from recoil or from feeding. I would only load bullets with a crimping cannelure for those loads. For bolt action, hunting or long range accuracy loads with a smooth boat-tail bullet with no cannelure--no crimp. If there's a cannelure it's a matter of preference since as stated before, some loads will give better results with a crimp. Crimping will increase pressure--so caution on throwing a crimp on already max velocity loads. Should be using the crimp as load is worked up or back of a touch and work back with the crimp. Be safe. Keep the right side UP!!!! Bob
  2. I found the Dillon an easy machine to set up. Ordered the Dillon dies for every caliber I load for and haven't used one of the many Rc-s dies that I have since then.. I don't like the Idea of seating and crimping in the same die. Dillon its in 2 different dies. Good luck. Be safe. Keep the right side UP!!!! Bob
  3. +1 It was an unintended shot not directed at a target in the COF.. AD. Be safe. Keep the right side UP!!! Bob
  4. +1 almost. I've broken one but as a result of having a bent decapping rod. Other than that I've not had any trouble. Look in the case through the neck with a light and see if you have damage around the flash hole opening. If so, the problem is more likely a bent rod or some other misalignment. What kind of equipment are you loading on ???? Bob
  5. John. I believe the meeting your referring to was right after the August shoot when it was decided to shoot thru the rest of the year weather permitting. At that time the subject was raised about reaffiliation and numerous members spoke up in favor. This issue has been brouhgt before the RGC board and it really raised some eyebrows. They had no knowledge that the group down there had dropped the affiliation. Then you should probably understand that some things regarding the IPSC shooters and that relationship with the Range owners (RGC), has changed. I probablyShould not go into this much further here. It's a sensetive issue. Get in touch with me if you'd like and I'll explain further. My father is listed in the book and if you call him he will give you a number to reach me at. Look forward to talking to you. Take care. Keep the right side UP!!! Bob
  6. Your on the right track. Continue as you have been but lose the screwdriver as it will put small marks or dings on the front of the reverse plug which will eventually show up as scores on the guide rod. I like the top of a bic pen which is plastic and wont leave marks. Bushing wrench is not needed. If the bushing was so tight on the barrel that you would hurt it by turning it to remove the reverse plug (zero clearance) it would destroy itself from just shooting the pistol. This clearance is important to accuracy but some clearance is needed. You should however push the barrel forward and out of battery before removing bushing from slide. A very well fit bushing will be almost impossible to remove with the barrel in lockup and that is where you will do un-need damage. Take care. Keep the right side UP!!!! Bob
  7. Check your spring loaded primer pocket. Had the same condition and found primer holder/pocket bound up and would not push ram back up after priming. Didn't take it off, rather just lubed it and free'd it up. pocket must return up after priming. This is assuming you fixed other problems first. Bob
  8. I dont buy it!! If barrel and bushing are properly fit it should not be putting any real pressure on barrel. The 1911 is designed to rotate the bushing out of the way of the recoil plug so as to remove the plug. Dont try to remove the bushing from slide but just rotate to clear recoil plug. With recoil plug removed and spring tension off of recoil spring, now remove slide from frame, remove recoil spring from guide rod, remove guide rod, turn bushing other direction and remove from slide. The full length guide rod is designed to eliminate coil bind and keep spring compression in straight line with the rod. I have a full lenght rod in every full size 1911 I own and if it didn't have one I'll install one. Generally you should use a barrel bushing wrench but I will use the top of a ball point pen or something non maring to push recoil plug in to rotate bushing but beware spring tension will shoot plug across room if not careful. Hope that helps. I am assuming a one piece guide rod. No hole to capture spring. Just remove reverse plug. Bob
  9. Lee, our thoughts and prayers go out to your father and family from all of us in S.E. New Mexico. Hope things will work themselves out. My appologies for taking this thread in a different direction with another conversation. Our best to you and yours. Pat, Good point. I always thought that it was expected that everyone help but guess that it does need to be stated so that people, including new and old shooters know its expected. Maybee a sign politely stating that then reinforced at shooters meetings. We're hoping not to lose anyone due to the changes and will work hard not to. As for new shooters I think we'd both agree that they are the future growth and part of the base for a strong club. Most people here are very helpful with new shooters as generaly they dont have to even ask. Keep your ears open for anyone in the area needing to also get an RO class going and let me know if you hear of anything. We would host it or go elsewhere if need be. We've got all the pieces cut for our first swinger and are fixing to start on another. As I work in the oil patch, steel, pipe etc. is easy to come by and we expect to build two swingers for the cost of the bearings and shaft. In three days with three men we have built 8 US poppers, 8 mini 's , 20 paper stands, started on plates and stands. Lack about 30 more paper stands, 20 more plates, some baricades, wallpanels and doors etc.. Think we'll be good for the next shoot and it will get better from there. Planning on a running man, some stand-ups and other assorted goodies. Our gun club put up money for the popper faces and plates and we have scrounged most of the rest at almost no cost. Went with Arntzen targets on the target faces and found that hard to beat at $64.00 each for US popper plates in t-1 steel. Can't hardly buy the steel for that and then you have to cut them. Our new match director, Danny, is a member of this forum and listed as a friend to me. He's a straight shooter, and great guy that I'm proud to have called a friend for many years. I have great hopes this is going to really take off with a little hardwork. We get things settled here and we'll have to try to get up there in the spring to meet some of you. Have heard you folks put on a pretty good show. Well, great to chat again, and again thanks for the help and input. Time to try and catch some zee-s to the hum of my bay-flex grinder. Best also to you and yours. Take care. Keep the right side UP!!!! Bob
  10. Try LETargets.com. Buying our cardboard USPSA targets there. They have so many different targets its sick.
  11. Pat. thanks for the input. We have a lot going on already on stage design, and are probably going to start out with more equipment than the folks that have been running this for 7-8 years. Were working on the basics now but will get to the moving stuff and action targets shortly. There are a few that show early to set up and stay to teardown and I think that will get better when everyone sees what were going to do. Our new match director is an old hand at this, but has been inactive for about 6 or 7 years. Your ideas on how you treat people and on some practice shooting sessions are very good. We have some new shooters getting started but might lose a few over clichism but what can you do? Not to many from out of town but that is the big one we think can be changed. We'd like to turn 22 shooters into 32 plus just localy. We are going to have to get the RO issue addressed early next year and were hoping to catch something up there . Will probably have 4 or 5 from here to attend. May need some help getting in with some other club for that. Really appreciate your input as well as all others. Hope to get up there next year with some of our bunch. Take care. Keep the right side UP!!!!! Bob
  12. Thanks Jason. Were going to load up about four of our people and make Hobbs last shoot next Saturdy. Should be good PR and help get the word out. Not to mention a chance to get away from the welding, grinding, work part of this for a day. Weve got lots of good ideas to shake things up and make this thing go. Were going to be continuing to shoot through the winter months if the weather cooperates. We need the shoots to get the bugs woorked out before going back USPSA in January. Were shooting the third Sunday every month. Would love to have you come over and check us out. Take care. Keep the right side UP!!!! Bob
  13. Thanks for the response guys. Nik, you make some very good points on making people feel part of it all. Sounds like your an experienced hand at this and a motivator of people. I'll have to work on my people skills some but our new match director is a great guy with those skills. Really appreciate your input. Joe, also want to thank you for your input. The cash award idea would be great if we could make it fly. I'm sure i'll probably get lots of ideas from responses. Thanks for the help. See from your profile you list Hawaii, but posts said you retired to I think Va. (edit) Oh yeh, dont forget all those little grey beings with big heads and slanted black eyes that started invading back in '47. Thanks again to both of you for your ideas. Keep the right side UP!! Bob
  14. Any one have any good ideas on how to get more people involved in things?? Were in the process of taking over the matches at our local gun club and going back USPSA ,after they have been away from the sanction for many years. The people who were running things are a separate entity from the gun club so were having to build all new steel, paper stands and start from the ground up. Looks like we'll have it all done in one month by really busting a move but when we get there it sure would be nice to have lots of help with the rest of it on shoot days. What can you do to motivate people to help more or get more involved??????? Our shoots are going to go from dol-drum to really something great with what we have planned but its going to take more to set up and tear down. What can you do to really get people pumped up and motivated to help more???? Discount fee's to those who help????? ANY IDEAS ????? Hey Joe , got your message and appreciated the input. Bob
  15. So how do you like the Ice? I guess I need to get one on the way! The ice magwell is a beautiful thing. Worth every penny. You won't be sorry!!!!
  16. If it has a pit every place you hit it with any thing more than 150 PF = than it is Mild steel. no one that wants to stay in business will build a us popper out of mild steel. my club uses some steel out of scrap Boiler Plate that is OK for minor but with shooters coming with major loads I don't use it much at all unless it is out past 18 yards. I want to up grade our club, but I don't want the poppers unless it is good steel, and as all I can find in the club budget is $250 that is too low a price for 4 good poppers The other club just got ?two new ones for $250 form a local guy " David " that look great but as of yet are unshot. You would have to strap them down to a pallet and ship them "Dock to Dock" to get a reasonable ship rate. normally you have to ask for the Dock To Dock rate or the shipper will act like they never herd of that rate. You can buy new popper faces made from t-100 steel for $64.00 each plus UPS. You'll have to reuse your old bases,or build new or buy thiers. We just recieved 8 US popper faces and 8 mini-popper faces. Looks like really nice stuff. they also have in AR-500 steel for rifle. Go to www.arntzentargets.com and check it out. b.scrib_nm
  17. I probably missed the date that you originaly posted that. Not trying to be a contrarian. Hope you enjoyed the shoot in Abq. The first two or three stages Sunday wer'nt bad but after that it got wicked. Spent lots of time driving stakes, putting paper back up, and wipping sand from our eyes. sometimes you just got to grin and bear it. Sent you an e=mail through this forum about a week ago. Maybe you didn't get it. Hope to see all at the next shoot. Later b.scrib_nm
  18. Having trouble with S&B brass for 40s&w. I'm loading about everything I can get my hands on but have had trouble with S&B thats been fired in an unsupported Glock chamber. You can see visible bulge in the bottom of case in or just above the web area. Some will size and runthrough dillon case gauge but many won'tcome close. I'm shooting fully supported chamber but my son shoots Glock and has found info. on possible case failures on non-fully supported chambers shooting reloads causing possible catastrophic failures, i.e., blowing mags up. no problems with any other headstamps. Anyone else had problems with S&B??? B.scrib_nm
  19. : SEEking Info????? I keep seeing references to Moly coated bullets including Precision Black bullets. What I thought I gained from thier website is that thier bullets are "polymer" coated. I saw nothing referencing moly coating. Did I miss something???? Is someone actually making moly coated bullets and WHO.. Info would be appreciated. Thanks, B.scrib_nm
  20. Don't know how to cancel this duplicate post. Sorry. HELP!!!!!!!
  21. MY understanding is that all rifle primers have a heavier or thicker shell to withstand the heavier strike of a rifle firing pin. A friend had some rounds loaded with rifle primers at a match afew months back. shot 1 stage OK and then started having no-fires with a good firing pin strike. Stripped the pistol down and checked things. found nothing, changed to ammo with pistol primmers and had no further trouble. Save em for rifle rounds if you want reliability! Be Safe B.scrib_nm
  22. How did the Donkey Arnold get there to start with?? Oh yeah, he posed as an Elephant and all those Elephant supporters put him there. Good luck all you Californians. The manufacturers will probably just refuse to ship any handguns to the state, rather than comply!!!
  23. That’s easy, it’s because the raid was scheduled for 7:00am. If they scheduled it later then there could be morning traffic problems. Can you imagine what its like for a couple of SUV loads of fully combat decked out high speed government types carrying sub guns getting caught behind a school bus that stops every hundred yards or so, with some Darth Vader masked 8 year old firing his phaser pistol at them. It’s very embarrassing! Respectfully, jkelly Thanks jkelly for that one. I sorely needed a good laugh today to brighten things up. After reading all the posts on this subject I find myself reflecting upon a document that I seen to find myself reading at least 2 or 3 times a year anymore, and the hair still stands up on the back of my neck everytime that I read it. It also seems the the further we go down this road, the more relevant it seems to become. That document would be The Declaration of Independence. Am I the only one who gets that tingly sensation?????? Respectfully, b.s._nm
  24. John, Are you really sure that you DON'T have a USPSA friendly range to practice at ???? Sometimes things ARE What We make them. Hope to see you at the club shoot tomorrow. Hope we dont get BLOWN out. b.s._nm
