  1. Patrick, That's good advice. Better to be beat under the current rules! I'll get you started on the .38 Super shooting minor rule :-) Do think Super's/supercomps/9X23s should be major in Limited or the Single Stack Classic?

Brain, As usual the police (Steve) are cheating (it is up to the lawyers to save the planet from the police)! He lives in the same neightborhood as Robbie! Steve, Lost to Tom Adair! Shame, Shame, Shame!
  3. I think that we ought to have a new Single Stack classic rule, especially for the Rio Salado Single Stack classic, that Robbie always shoots minor, regardless of whatever he is shooting- 9mm to .454 Casull. Seriously though, that extra round can really matter especially when shooting steel. I have never shot the official Single Stack Classic but I have shot the Rio Salado Single Stack "Classics." (2d place to guess who!) In the courses of fire that Rio had, an extra round could really be important. There is certainly no disadvantage to shooting a .40 so why would you want to build .45 for the Single Stack Classic???
  4. I used to follow the Gunsite-approved technique of one sight picture and 2 shots. Noticed how I said used to. I would have an A and a C or D or (gulp!) a miss on the 2d shot. Times weren't really any faster than when I shoot 2 shots 2 sight pictures. Another problem w/ "double tap" is that you start thinking about the next target, mag change, movement etc. instead of shooting that 2d shot. The 2d shot tends to go wild. I realize that I am talking about tenths or hundredths of a second but I think it is important to focus on each shot and then go on to do the next task. At one AZ State IPDA championship, I did a "double tap" on an close target (5 yards) and had a -0 (A) and a mike. I never saw the sight on the 2d shot. Beat by Rob Leatham yet again.............
  5. I think most +5 tubes will get you to ten rounds. I believe that Mike Voight did a lot of experimentation on where to put the optima on his shotgun- on the barrel, on the front of the receiver, towards the rear of the receiver. The really trick thing about his set-up is that you don't need to pick your face up off the stock. You can get a really good cheek weld. The optima is mounted nearly (or exactly ??) in the same place as the rear sight for a ghost-ring gun. I use an Aimpoint and have to pad the stock as Patrick mentioned. I think the shotgun kicks you around a bit more when you have to lift your head up off the stock. A good rule of thumb in 3 gun is to do whatever Mike Voight does. He has the time, skill, and ability to experiment around alot more than I do. However, if you are more comfortable w/ the sight mounted farther forward then go w/ that. My Aimpoint is receiver mounted and I like it as far forward as my weaver rail allows. I have had some wandering zero problems lately - during the slug stage at the 3 gun natl. my 1187 decided to shoot about 7 inches high. Not pretty.
  6. They have been slacking. The last time I am aware of chronographing is the 1999 3-Gun Nationals. I'll bet that we see the chrono again in the near future however.
  7. I don't have any personal experience w/ an entire DPMS rifle, however my open gun uses a DPMS upper receiver and bolt carrier. Never had a problem w/ either. Some very good shooters use DPMS components. This gun sounds like it has a good price. It is not too hard to make minor in a 16 inch if you shoot 68 or 69 grain bullets, but again that is only an issue at the USPSA 3-gun Nationals. FYI I'm not sure what you mean by flip up 300 yd sight. Is that the standard A2 sight? I personally don't care for limited/iron sight rifles w/ a short sight radius - I have trouble getting a good front sight focus.
  8. I agree w/ Bill about porting/comping a shotgun. I don't feel any significant difference and my times are about the same. The money would be better spent on ammo or a trigger job - of course if you shoot a Glock, you'll probably AD w/ a good trigger on your shotgun :-). Shotgun isn't ALL about reloading - maybe half!
  9. An easyloader will significantly improve your reloading times w/ an 1187/1100. I highly recommend putting one on your shotgun. It is totally different from the tube speedloaders which as Erik noted are illegal in USPSA limited and SOF (all classes) and all Msty Mtn 3 gun classes including open (which does not follow USPSA rules) as well.
  10. Under SOF rules, the rifle must be chambered in a military caliber so .243 is out. I would not be surprised if he shows up with a 6.5X55 swede!
  11. I like choate tubes also. I agree w/ eric. He needs to figure out if he wants to shoot limited or open or if they even have such categories in the matches that he is going to shoot in. Nothing wrong w/ the tube sticking out past the barrel. The shot or wad does not hit the tube even if it is quite a bit longer than the barrel.
  12. Ok, I'll keep my face on the stock! Lately, I have been shooting some skeet and clays w/ a dot on my Benelli (sorry Brian). One thing that I have noticed w/ the dot is that I can really call my shots. Scores are about the same but I can tell that the shot is right on or if it will hit the front of the bird or the rear of the bird. I've never been able to do that by simply looking at the bird.
  13. Thanks, Les. Now I really hope to make it next year!
  14. Updated info on M1As. Leatham is going to shoot one at the WC 3-gun championship. I'll find out how he is setting his up for the match.
  15. Les, I found Kyle's web page. It has match results but does not describe the stages themselves. Could I get you to describe the stages in a little more detail? What kind of targets were used?
  16. Well that's not surprising. I'd like to attend that match next year. What are the equipment rules? Do you know what sort of equipment Cooley and Voight used?
  17. Mike Voight uses a holosight and that probably says it all. I know that some Delta guys also use holosights as well as aimpoints. Holosights may be the best red dot for an AR. The standard reticle has a small enough dot (1 MOA I believe) to be used on farther targets. I believe that a low powered variable is a best all around sight for an AR however. A scope set on 1.5 power is nearly as fast as a dot on the close stuff and cranked up to 4 or 5X is much better for shooting farther targets. A little magnification helps you define the targets and you can easily call where the shot broke on a distant target. If I was going to mount a dot as my sole sight, I would use a Holosight. Who won that match?? (Edited by kellyn at 10:41 pm on July 4, 2001)
  18. Then, it's settled. IRON SIGHTS ROCK!! Steve, FYI, I am going to back to limited - it's scary in open!
  19. Thanks Bonedaddy! Of course, Yamil gets a picture of my worst stage but at least I did not screw up the reload. Right now the benelli is a stock M1 practical w/ an aimpoint mounted as far forward on the weaver rail as possible. I like Mike Voight's setup w/ the optima mounted low on the receiver but I'll stick w/ the aimpoint. I've always shot an aimpoint mounted on the receiver (copying 3-gun guru Jake Kempton's setup) and have seen no burning reason to change it. Maybe it's just because I'm used to it but I prefer the receiver mount over the barrel mount. It seems more sturdy. It also seems faster. I've shot shotguns w/ optimas and holosights mounted on the barrel but I've never liked them as much although it's difficult to articulate why. for SOF, I hope to get a 21inch barrel and place a post front sight w/ a fiber optic on it (I hate benelli's factory front sight - too fat). I intend to use the factory rear sight. I'll put an extended improved or modified choke in it (to get the barrel to 22 inches). If I can't do that in time, I'll shoot my Kempton built 1187.
  20. Pat, I was just picking on you. Inside of 15-20 yards, I would expect the pistol (limited or open) to be slightly faster than the rifle but I am going to do a test to find out. However past that, a rifle/carbine will come into it's own. I expect that you'll trounce mp-5s with your open gun.
  21. Even and isto, What kind of stages did they have at the Nordic championships??
  22. Bonedaddy, Anything w/ Bogie in it is COOL! On my first date w/ my wife, we watched Casablanca.
  23. I have an MIA built for highpower. It is on a springfield receiver and has a heavy douglas air-gauged barrel, steel bedded in an mcmillan stock, national match parts (trigger, sights, gas system, flash hider, etc). I have never shot it in a 3 gun match though. I am not sure that M1As are up to the pounding of 3 gunning. When I used to shoot "rattle battle" (the Infantry trophy team match), we were constantly shooting our M14s apart. I really like shooting M1A/M14 but I think that a DSA FAL or an AR10 carbine might be a better choice for 3 gunning. But the AR15 is trully the way to go.
  24. Probably more like "babes in bikinis w/ stock guns."
