I just noticed that .357 SIG is allowed to be major in Single-Stack now. Does that mean that .38 Super can be major now, too (if only loaded to 8 rounds)?

My favorite Irish Whiskey is Black Bush. I got turned on to it when I toured the Bushmills Distillery in Northern Ireland. It's a blended, so it's relatively inexpensive at about $30, at least when compared to the single malts. It's aged in rum casks so it has a slightly sweeter taste than most whiskeys. One idea I've had for pistol, and I think would also be very interesting with rifle, is to do away with Major/Minor scoring, but for final score mutiply hit factor by power factor, i.e., score on a state would be (points * power factor)/time. For local matches, one could use declared power factors while for major matches the chronograph would give one's actual power factor. I'm not sure where the most competitive "point" on the scale would be, but I don't think one could argue that .308 was being short-changed, like making .223 major. Don't the new rules lower major to the point where one could make it with one of the new AR calibers, like 6.8mm SPC or 6.5mm Grendel? If so, it would seem that .223 is on its way out, anyway. Thanks for the ideas. I just did a quick search for the "Sound Defenders" ear plugs and found http://www.earmolds.com/sound_plugs.htm. However, according to the site, the NRR is only 25db. Also, there is a statement in the text, "Remember too that when tightly and completely inserted, compressible foam HPDs have potentially higher NRRs than custom molded devices, simply because there is less bulk in the ear to cause possible shifting of the device and because the seal takes place entirely within the ear canal." So, it's still not clear to me that they are going to do better than the 33db plugs I am using now, since I am very careful to get a good seal with them. Lincoln

Because the weather is getting colder and because of the locations of local ranges, I have to do at least 2/3 of my practice indoors. Not too long ago, I switched to shooting Open with an SVI IMM Open gun. It is a little loud. I went from using 30db ear plugs with 19db electronic muffs to using 33db ear plugs with 30db conventional muffs. However, I still feel like I've been to a rock concert after practicing. I am experiencing (hopefully temporary) diminished hearing and ringing even when using so much hearing protection that I can barely hear my timer. I fear that I am doing permanent damage and am looking for suggestions about what I could do differently when practicing indoors. Some questions I have are as follows: 1. I have read all of the threads I could find on hearing protection, etc. However, is there something I am missing? Is there hearing protection out there rated even higher than the 33db plugs and 30db muffs I'm using currently? What are you other Open shooters using when practicing indoors? Be sure to speak up so that I can hear you. 2. Should I just practice with an iron sighted, nonported gun? 3. Should I get a .22 conversion for my Open gun? This would at least let me practice with my competition gun's sight, trigger, etc.; even though the recoil characteristics would be completely different. 4. Should I get a nonported barrel for my Open gun? This seems like a good alternative at first, but, with more thought, I'm not sure that it would be any better than a .22 conversion. Lincoln

At the 3 Gun Nationals, I saw at least 2 shooters using a carrier for shotgun speedloaders that was worn on the thigh and held 6 loaders. I asked one of the shooters where he got it, but he couldn't remember the name of the company that made it. After poking around on the internet, I can't find it anywhere. I'm sorry for not being clearer. By using the term "raw sense data," I was trying to get across the notion of bare experience, before any interpretation is put to it, even any interpretation about a subject/object distinction. I think we're saying similar things. Lincoln

You definitely got a lot more out of it than I did. I guess I lost patience and stopped trying to interpret it too soon. As to "If we know something by way of direct experience there's no need to debate it," I guess that depends on what you mean by "know." Raw sense data is always "true," insofar as such data isn't really true or false, but, whenever we add an interpretation to it, that interpretation does have a truth value that could be correct or incorrect. If I see sense data X, the raw data itself can't be "wrong" because it isn't a proposition that has a truth value. However, once I say, "X is a cow," that statement could be true or false. (Of course, I'm coming at this from the perspective of Western hard, cold, analytical philosophy. I know very, very little about Eastern philosophy.) Lincoln

When I was in school I took a lot of philosophy classes. Once, when I was taking a course on metaphysics, my professor, Susan Haack, told me that, when something is difficult to understand, there are two possibilites: either the author is trying to say something very profound but difficult to get across, or the author is just an idiot. I, too, am an INTJ. I thought that only something like 2% of the population were INTJs, yet we seem to be getting proportionately more than that in this thread. I wonder, along with some previous posters, whether INTJ's are disproportionately represented in shooting. Lincoln
