  1. I saw it happens with a Weatherby 30-06 (a Vanguard Synthetic, I think) at the range nearby. This shooter was at the far left position, and as he finished firing, he put his rifle case on the bench, at 180 degrees to the targets. The rifle was pointing the target, with the bolt open. He grabbed the rifle, pushed the bolt forward, but without pushing the bolt down completely. As he put the rifle on the case and tried to close it, the top of the case pushed the bolt all way down causing the rifle to fire inside the case towards the parking lot to the left of his position – no car was hit, but it was a close call. Had he had his rifle towards the opposite direction, it would fire towards the other shooters still close the bench to his right. It was quite scare. I never saw the shooter again, so I do not know what cause the discharge, and how it was fixed. Bottom line, he had a rifle with a live round while people were restoring targets, and having the bolt open is not enough safety measure.
  2. I am wondering too. I do have fellow shooter that cleans the brass after loading to remove the lube, just because the lube bottle says so. I have started lubing my cases only last year after getting a batch of tougher than usual 40 cal brass, and so far I have reloaded something about 10K to 15K between 40 cal and 45 ACP without cleaning a single case after reloading. I do not know why this step is ever needed for pistol cases. I think the directions to remove the lube comes from old time oil base lube for rifle cases where the oil lube would cause an increase of chamber pressure, but not sure if it is the case. Regardless, I do not clean the lube from the brass.
  3. For future reference, I plan on building something to attach to a second tripod to act as a light barrier. Would I use something semi-transparent, to just diffuse the light, or should I use something that would cast a shadow? I think both will work fine. The light barrier will prevent direct sunlight on the sensors, and the ambient light will be enough for the chrono operate properly. The semi-transparent cover also will prevent direct light, and the light over the sensors probable will be a little brighter than using a barrier, but for my point of view, both will work. I have a preference for the semi-transparent material (fabric) because it does not need an extra tripod, and it can be placed over the sky screens, pending on the sides - easy to carry and easy to setup.
  4. As already mentioned, take a thermometer to the range and keep the temperature value with your reload data. Expect variations in the final velocity as the temperature changes during seasons (or if you travel for a match). Years ago I bought this small thermometer and it is perfect to take to the range http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?...uct_id=10671021 I also take a small bubble level, just to speed-up the chrono setup – not a must but it helps. If it is an outdoor range, sky screens are very usable to deflect direct sun light, but they do not work if the sun light is not coming from the top, almost vertical. Depending on the range location and time of the day you might have direct sunlight on the chrono sensors, and it will affect the readings. If it is the case, you can improvise a light barrier with a photo tripod with a panel on top, or with a target stand, if available at the range.
  5. P-A: Precision Ammunition; P-A RH: Precision Ammunition - Reduced Hazardous http://www.precisionammo.com I think they are produced by RUAG in Austria under Geco brand, but not sure about it. I still have about 10K, and have reloaded another 10K or 15K. They are my primary brass for my Limited loads. It is widely used here by Florida Sherriff’s Officers and they are not difficult to find once fired. They are a little harder than other brass brands, but it can be easily solved using spray lubricant before reloading. Also, the primmer pocket is a little tighter than other brands, but reloads fine (I am using CCI primers).
  6. From my experience and from a few fellow shooters using CZ TS, more likely you are leaving your left hand too close to the mag release, and during the recoil movement it gets pressed. I got it solved by making sure that my weak hand is far back as possible for a good grip. The other fellow shooters “shaved” the top of the mag release, making it shorter. It is a pain in the neck to remove the mag release. It is held by a screw with the head pinned down. By any chance, do the magazines drop if you shoot strong hand only? If it is yes, it more likely the source of the problem is the mag release. Hope this helps.
  7. I agree with the rule, but in this situation the score sheet did not have insufficient entries. It was complete at the time the shooter signed it, and it was ready for data entry. I think it should follow the standard procedure for arbitration, which may or may not grant a reshoot.
  8. Sometimes it is oil that dripped into the grip. I do clean the grip at home before the match and at the match I use rosin to keep it dry and oil free. For the hands, rosin, Pro Grip or hand sanitizer (alcohol gel) they all keep the hands dry and oil free. For the grip there is another option: tennis racket overgrip, like Tourna grip, Gamma grip and similar overgrips. It works pretty well for me playing tennis or shooting here in South Florida. You can find it in any sports store, even at Wal-Mart. If you are not familiar with tennis stuff, here is how it looks like: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_sg?url=s...amp;x=0&y=0
  9. I have been dealing with the same problem and after spending a good amount of money on different prescription glasses set up ended up with something that works for me and for some fellow shooters and I think it would work for you- Mono-vision Prescription glasses. Mono-vision prescription is having a close sight prescription for the dominant eye, and far prescription for the non-dominant eye. Although is seen odd, the brain adapts to this setup, and it became natural after 10 to 15 minutes after wearing this setup for the first time. What is needed is having your eye doctor write down the prescription for you dominant eye (usually the right eye) to have the focus about 6 inches ahead of your hand while having your arm forward (focus on the front sight distance). Usually reading glasses have focus closer than that, and computer use prescription glasses have focused a little far away from that. Shooting prescription glasses have the focus a little far ahead than that. The non-dominant eye prescription is the normal prescription you are using currently. If you never wear a mono-vision prescription before, it will fell odd on the first 15 minutes you wear it, but the brain get used to that, and after that you will not notice you are using a mono-vision prescription. The benefit of the mono-vision is that it became natural to you and the brain will switch automatically from dominant eye to non-dominant eye whenever you need to focus either to the front sigh to something far away. Currently I do use Bolle frame with inserts, but for my first try I order a very inexpensive frame with prescription insert from Zenni Optics. 10. Soon or later you are going to come to Ft. Lauderdale / Miami area. If you do, plan to stop by our club. USPSA handgun matches every Thursdays 7 PM and 1st Sundays morning. Rifle / shotgun matches every 2nd Tuesdays 7 PM. At the same location another club holds handgun matches every 2nd Sundays and finally we have a Steel Challenge every 4th Sundays morning. www.sfpc.org P.S. New shooters are welcome and encouraged to shoot whether or not they are going to join the club. We have around 60 / 65 shooters every Thursday nights
  11. Most of the light strikes I ever had been due to light mainspring (trial and error testing) or high primers (bad reloading batch - my fault). More likely you had a high primer. I called STI fot that matter, and they do not recommend a longer firing pin to solve light strikes (but I do know that will help if I ever have a high primer). They see it more a solution to prevent primer overflow. Regardless, Dawson was suggested to me, and is what I am using now.
  12. If you want a VV N320 substitute you can try Ramshot Competition. It measures the same as N320, it has a higher load limit before going overpressure (I cannot use N320 for my 45ACP 200gr Montana Gold loads but I can use RS Competition). It flows better than N320, and it is less expensive too. Currently I am using it for my Limited 40 cal and Single Stack 45 ACP loads, although I still have enough reserve of N320.
  13. About a month ago I had similar experience. I was testing some loads with 200gr lead with 4.2 gr of Clays on a 45ACP and I started having disparate reading on my Chrony. Min=396, max=1123 and average 907 fps. I did not have this extreme difference earlier in the morning, and then I noticed that the sun had moved and I did not have the shade from the range roof – the screens were on the sun. On my other gun chrono earlier the 9major readings came right, but later with 9mm factory (WWB) in the same gun I got things like 261, 6000, 7000 and 986 fps – just impossible. Until better explanation, that was a misreading due to the uneven light on top of the reading screens.
  14. Thanks for the tip but why? Closest to 9mm is .3125. That is 5/16 rod that can be found locally for less and without shipping. And do you really need anything more than the one rod for pistols? We're talking about something that should work for what is essentially bore sizes for 9, 10 and 11 mm, so what I carry is just what I picked up for the nine (my bag is heavy enough as it is...) I carry 2 rods, one for 40 cal and another for 9mm. Why? It is easier to remove a squib with a heavier rod. Anyway, the range is 20 yards from the parking lot and shooting bag weight is not an issue for me. Could it be accomplished with just one rod? Absolutely yes.
  15. Thanks for the tip but why? Closest to 9mm is .3125. That is 5/16 rod that can be found locally for less and without shipping. Not here. The only game in town is either Home Depot or Lowe's - very few options.
  16. I got mine from here http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?i...&top_cat=79 Get the closest diameter smaller than your barrel. It is inexpensive, and now I have one in each shooting bag for each caliber a shoot. I just use the rod, no knobs - length is 8 inches.

  18. The flat shell holders are for the Lee Primer. I would suggest getting the Lee primer. It is faster and more convenient to prime with it than on the press (I used to prime my cases while watching TV). http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=566058 http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=807875 You need something like this (for the calibers you reload): http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=616684 Give a call to Lee Precision, they are very friendly people and they will provide all the answers you need to know to set up your Challenge press. www.leeprecision.com
  19. I might not know the full details of the event, but I doubt that this officer should be kept in the streets. I am not near Oklahoma, but things like that should not happen, and when they happen, they should be addressed promptly. According to the news, the local D.A. did not release the dashboard video immediately, mentioning pressing charges against the EMT, but everything changed when the cell phone video hit the news. No charges were pressed against the EMT, and the HP officer is in paid leave waiting he conclusion of the investigations. This change of events by the D.A. does not sound well. I doubt this officer will stay in with OHP for long. He is now famous. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,526128,00.html Full dashboard cam video Split screen dashboard video and cell phone images
  20. Actually 10.2.4 states specifically that one procedural penalty should be applied per shot fired after the point where the reload was required until a reload is performed. And 10.2.3 specifically references the above cases, i.e. 10.2.1 and 10.2.2 --- as such it can not apply to 10.2.4, and must be deemed exclusionary in this instance..... You are correct. Re-read all rules section again, and now I am convinced - 10.2.3 does not apply to 10.2.4 therefore 4 procedural penalties. Sorry, but 10.2.3 applies to all procedural penalties (including 10.2.8, not discussed here). None in the rules applies only "to the above cases", unless the item is explicitly referenced, and 10.2.3 does not make any reference to any other item. One procedural penalty overall in should be scored in this specific example. 10.2.3 AND 10.2.4 supports it. If they wanted 10.2.4 to read the way you're interpreting it they would have said something like "one procedural penalty should be applied per shot fired after the point where the reload was required until a reload is performed, with the maximum number of penalties not exceeding the available number of hits per 10.2.3"....or something like that. You are correct. Re-read all rules section again, and now I am convinced - 10.2.3 does not apply to 10.2.4 therefore 4 procedural penalties.
  21. My reloading bench is attached to my garage wall. it is 12" deep, 48" long and 36" high, made almost all from 2"x4". I do have a Dillon 650, a Lee LoadMaster and a Lee single stage on it. In my prior residence I did not have a garage, and I had my Lee LoadMaster attached on top of a piece of hardwood, which I clamped to folding table whenever I want to reload.
  22. + 1 It is time consuming (and frustrating) to spend a good amount of time online trying to figure out where the club or range location is. A good location reference makes everybody happy! One more suggestion: in some place near the address or directions please mention the nearby large city or a reference point that might be know to someone out of the area. For example, do you know where in the world is Titusville, FL, if you never considered going to the Florida Open? (it is east of Orlando, FL). How about Circleville, OH?

  24. The Lee Loadmaster is sensitive to adjustments made to the shell plate. There is no stop position for how low / high the shell plate other than screwing the round knob until it “feels” OK and there is no much drag while the shell plate rotates during normal operation. The side effect is that the height of the dies sometimes needs to be adjusting, especially for OAL. I am not sure whether or not it would affect the sizing by having the resizing and the FCD dies too high. How the rounds do not pass the gauge? At the very end, close to the rim or close to the mount? I assume that after you rebuilt the press you reset all the dies, like and new setup. Do the rounds that do not fit the gauge do fit the barrel? How do the diameter measurements compare from the rounds that pass and those that do not pass the gauge? I would try to identify the problem before going for the U-die.
