  1. I shoot a Dawson fixed rear and FO front and could not be happier with the set up! Shoots to exact point of aim, excellent sight picture, and very strong set. Had to file a very little bit from the rear to get the fit, but once I did it was pretty easy. No way I'd go with an adjustable after having used this set-up. Dawson is the best!
  2. What are your favorite kind of grips to use for competing in Single Stack?
  3. May the Lord bless and keep you during this very difficult period.
  4. I guess I can't improve on what I'm already shooting then! I've been shooting 4.4 gr. of Titegroup under a 230 Black Gold for an average of 758 fps. outta my 5" S&W. Same load still makes major outta my Kimber Ultra Carry II w/ 3" barrel (well most of the time it will). I was just wondering if I could get a little less muzzle flip by going down in bullet weight?
  5. Looking for recommendations for a good soft shooting load that still makes major (I know, I know!! Kind of an oxymoron, but thought I'd check and see what works for others). I intend to concentrate on SS division next year, and am still torn between shooting a .45 or .40. Was initially leaning towards .40, but the more I think about it, the more I'm going back to .45. All I've ever loaded in .45 has been 230's. Anybody recommend 200's or 180's to take a bit of the oomph out of .45?
  6. With the $1,000 budget I'd get the 45acp Spartan & a trigger job. Shoot 45 minor for ESP, major for CDP & SS. What 45's do you already have. One of them may do just as well, unless you are just hankering for a new gun. I already have Kimber and S&W SS guns in .45. Believe me, it isn't a matter of needing a new gun, it's all about the want part. I've never had a SS in .40 and just thought it a novel idea.
  7. I'm planning on shooting in Single Stack division next year, and would like opinions on which gun I may use??? I'm gearing towards a Kimber Stainless II chambered in .40 at the moment. I already have a couple of .45's, but am actually looking for something that can pull double duty and shoot in ESP class in IDPA too. And I won't spend more than $1,000.00 on everything (gun, trigger work, new sights). What are your opinions??
  8. I'm in the process of getting a G17 and G35 together to send to John at S&J to have him build me an Open and Limited gun on the Glock platform. I've seen a few Open glocks out there, but none compare to the S&J's!! Give John a call. He'll be happy to help answer any questions for you. You can probably build an Open glock by aquiring parts and doing self assembly a little cheaper, but from the reports on S&J you'll find on this forum and from what I've gathered from John himself, you will not get a better gun.
  9. The smaller frame gives you less mass and less gripping area. Can't see how that would help to tame perceived recoil at all???
  10. And the fat @$$ corporate $h!t heads at the oil companys getting rich off of us working folk.
  11. After nearly three years and 10,000 rounds of utterly reliable service from my G34 in Production (and being pretty damned closed to cracking into A class), I've decided to go Glock all the way in USPSA competition and be done with the headaches delivered by not being able to shoot a 1911 as good as my Glock. I'm going to have S & J Custom build me an Open gun out of a 17, but I'm at kind of a quandry over which model to shoot in Limited. I've got a couple of buddies whom shoot 35's, and I've shot them and like them pretty well. But I wanna hear from those who have them about the 24's. John at S & J highly recommends the 24, and I'm leaning strongly towards his advice and getting one! But would like to hear a few more "war stories" from others whom have experience with both the G35 and G24 before making the commitment. Please, give me the why and why nots of why you do/don't like the specific model (24 and 35 only). Thanks!
  12. Man's division?? Ask Rob Leatham if Prod is a mans division!!!
  13. Also, what kind of brass are you guys using?? Do you use new stuff, once fires, range pick up?
  14. To those shooting S & J Custom Open Glocks, I'd like to hear some reports on how your guns are running, either good, bad, or indifferent. I've posted some inquiries about them in the past and have yet to hear anything negative. I'm going to buy my first Open gun soon, and cant' make up my mind about what I want. The concensus says to go with some make of 2011, and I've been looking at a bunch of them. But I'm a die hard Glock guy from way back and can't get myself to eliminate the S & J guns from the list of candidates unless someone with a bad experience with an S & J can convince me to. I'd like to know certain stats like how many rounds your gun has digested so far, how many rounds you got through before a failure (either minor or catostrophic), how the gun tracks, how is recoil as compared to an Open gun based on a 2011 platform (if you have had sufficient experience with both to cross reference), if you use S & J bigstick mags and how they feed, if you've experienced any feeding problems with other mag combos, what load you use and others you tried that didn't quite work, pretty much the life story of your experience with the S & J Open gun (don't be afraid to go into detail, I'm kinda slow and most times need a vivid picture painted). And please, I'd like facts, not just opinions.
  15. I'm considering purchasing either a Limcat Dragoncat .38 Supercomp or a Bedell Shorty in .38 Super. Both are preowned guns, both less than 1,000 rounds fired, both the same price. I'm just breaking into Open, and want to start out with a good gun that will last me a long time. The Limcat is nearly new and totally decked out with hardchrome and a bunch of goodies but no mags. The Bedell is three years old, blued, but well kept and hardly used and comes with one big stick and three 140mm mags with Arredondo internals. Which one should I go for??? I am familiar with Bedell's guns as I know Chuck at Shooters Connection and several folks who shoot them. Never had the chance to handle or even see a Limcat "in the flesh".
  16. I also shoot a P-16, and though I haven't tried a Ghost, I had rather sloppy results with a CR Speed. I just ordered a Guga Ribas, so we'll see how that works. I think most of the "speed" holsters made these days are geared toward the S_I format. Probably not going to find many that won't have at least a little bit of wobble in a traditional 1911 configuration.
  17. They do! Get 'em, you wont be sorry!!
  18. I just ordered a Dawson wide notch rear for my Glock. A friend has a set of adjustable Dawson FO's on his service model XD45. They're great. I'd recommend dawson for any of your sighting needs!
  19. I'm looking to "step up my game" in Production class, and am looking for recommendations for the best holster to use. I've just ordered some CR Speed Glock mag holders to go on my CR Speed belt, and need a good competitive holster to go with them. I'm seriously leaning toward the Blade-Tech with the DOH attachment for USPSA Production class, and also using the Stingray belt attachment when I switch off to IDPA SSP class. Any pros/cons on this set up, or any others, would be appreciated!!
  20. I currently shoot a Para in Limited. An STI Open gun is forthcoming. Can't afford another Limited gun in the S_I configuration for at least a year. I want a holster that will allow me to switch back and forth between Limited and Open without having to "turn screws". At my local matches I'll shoot Limited, finish the course and get back in line to also shoot Open with the same squad. I can't have a holster that will require me to do any "fiddling", as there won't be enough time. I just want to take out the Para, insert the STI, and be merrily on my way. Can anyone tell me if the Guga Ribas (Giga Rubas, however it's spelled) will let me do what I want to do??
  21. They call them raceguns because they're like race cars in many ways. You can't build a race car that will work perfectly on every track for every driver with no changes. They build and tune/adjust race cars for specific tracks/drivers just like smiths tune or adjust raceguns for specific ammo and shooters. It's not simple or cheap, but going fast rarely is That's about as simple and precise as it could have been put. I guess if I'd have thought a bit harder and used they same analogy (one I'm fairly familiar with), I wouldn't have wasted so much time yesterday in my lengthy response. I guess I know more about NASCAR than I do guns. Oh well, the race is getting ready to start and I'm outta beer
  22. Thanks for making my point. The guns come from the factory and still need tuned. And in response to Merlin, if a Robert Yates engine needs tuning after it leaves the shop, then the thing should have stayed in the shop until it was right (or he should have just let the Childress guys build him one). The same way I feel these guns should stay in the shop until they're right. The more feedback I get, the more I seem to realize that Open class is a high priced headache that I should probably stay away from.
  23. OK, I guess I'm gonna have to play devil's advocate here. I too am eagerly wanting to break into Open class, but have had a heck of a time trying to figure out which gun to go with. I am VERY far away from having much in the way of gunsmithing skills, and to be quite honest, am just not too damned mechanically inclined. Price is a major factor for me. That being said, $2,500.00 for a Tru-Bor is not a small chunk for me, so $3,000, $4,000, and up is even that much more. Here is where I guess I'll be stirring the ol' $hit pot if you will. I have only been in the game of competitive handgun shooting for less than four years, and it seems to me from all of the matches I've been to and all of the info I've read that STI's are about the top of the game. Why then can anyone justify spending several thousand dollars on a gun that may or may not work??? Why should you have to have a "performance check" done on a gun that costs more than a decent used car? It seems to me that when you drop that kind of cash, the damn thing had better not just run, but had better run it's @ss off for a long time to come! I've posted more than a couple of threads on this and other forums asking for help in deciding what gun to go with, and all I ever seem to hear are the same old "you better watch out for this, and you'd better watch out for that" in a 1911/2011 type of gun. I've posted several other threads requesting info about Glock Open guns, mostly those from S & J Custom. Not once have I heard anything at all in the negative about their products. And seeing as how I can get them to build me a gun and get two or three "big stick" mags for the base cost of an STI Tru-Bor without any mags, can someone PLEASE tell me why the hell I shouldn't get one and just forget about these damned 1911/2011 high price some/seemingly most-time flunkys????? I just can not find logic in paying several thousand bucks for something that's gonna require another grand or so to get to work the way it should. All of that said, I do own one Glock, and four 1911 style guns. I have three single stacks and a Para Hi-Cap. The Glock is the only gun that I've never, in several thousand rounds, had the first problem with. Don't start getting the idea that I'm a Glock nut and have it out for 1911's. I actually prefer the feel of a 1911, and am a self confessed "gear snob", so I'd love the have a top end Brazo's, Dawson, Bedell, etc. to make mouths water at the local shows. But I can't find a bit of logic in why I should shell out several "G's" to have what looks the best if it don't run the best without having to be screwed with a bunch???!!! If STI is so "good", why do they require performance enhancement?? Shouldn't that be built in from the start??? Can anyone give me a decent explanation here?
  24. I'm trying to break into shooting in Open, but am having a dickens of a time deciding which gun to go with. I'm not overly mechanically inclined, and about all I know how to do with guns is shoot 'em. I DON'T want anything that's going to require a bunch of tinkering with to make work right. I shoot with Chuck from Shooters Connection, and he's trying hard to steer me towards a Bedell. I'm a Glock fan from way back (no comments, please), and have been seriously considering one of S & J Custom's guns. I currently have the opportunity to purchase a slightly used Brazos Pro SC 4.5. The gun is less than a year old, with around 3,000 rounds fired. Price is $2,950. Looking for feedback from you Open gunners telling me whether I should or shouldn't take it while I can get it.
  25. I'm assuming that you want to add weight to your gun?? Personally, I'd opt for the Dawson heavy Ice magwell. Weighs 6.something oz. and looks a whole lot better (to me, black on black is much more asthetically pleasing than brass on black).
