Brian Enos's Forums... Maku mozo!

I'm looking at getting a Digital SLR. Nothing Pro. I just want a camera like I used to have.

The one that makes the most sense is the Nikon D40.

Any opinions on this or is there a better camera in the same price range ?

My first DSLR was its predecessor the D50 and I think it is a great camera for its class. Buy good glass to go with it and you'll be very happy.

good glass and memory cards...but I'm a Canon guy...I have a 20D but the Rebel XT is a lot of bang for the buck...

  • 3 months later...

as far as lenses go..

Nikon has brought out a whole bunch of neat little zooms..they are 3.5-5.6 aperture..but they have the VR technology..

this is mainly because of the high ISO advantage that the D3 offers..

but they are nice and sharp lenses, and remarkably affordable prices..

with the introduction of the D3, D300 and the D700 coming soon..

there should be decent prices on the D200 and D2s around also.

the D300 is a really neat high end consumer camera also.

If you don't need the speed of a SLR,

consider a "standard" digital camera.

I have a 9 megapixel, 10x zoom

Fuji that takes Great shots (slowly)

and don't have to change lenses, or

pay more than $375 for the entire rig

(no extra lenses).

The only thing it won't do, is go fast -

tough to take pictures of moving

objects, and it takes a few seconds

between photos.

But, it's a lot less expensive, and

a lot easier to use/carry.

I have two digital cameras; One is a Casio 10megapix 'pocket camera' I have a 4 gig card in it and can take video as well as stills. The stills are S-L-O-W to write, but the nice thing is, I am likely to have this camera in my pocket. The other camera is a Canon EOS Rebel XT and it is really nice, at least for an amateur snapshooter like me. I have the standard lense it came with a a 1 gig card in it. it will take at least 14 shots to the buffer and and is fast enough for me.

I may want to get a different lens someday, maybe something around 400mm so I can get some longer shots, and maybe a zoom that tops around 105 or so. I seem to remember that as a nice lens for my old Pentax H1A.

The thing I like best about either camera is that I can take enough pictures that I have a reasonably good chance of getting a passable shot, whereas with film, I was always shepherding my film and not shooting enough.
