Oldtimer question

I read in the early 2000s an interview or article with Jerry Barnhart. He was asked if he could have an optic OR a comp on an Open gun (not both) which would he rather have. 

 

Anybody remember which he said was more important?

Independant of the question above, which would you pick? Comp  OR optic?

Don't remember what he said but dot 100 %.

I don't recall the interview, however ...

 

Were I younger with better eyes, I'd go with a comp.  At 69, the dot is more useful.

He did try shooting an iron-sighted comp gun at one Nationals around then.

In 2000 or 2001, JB shot and won the Ohio match in Sylvania with a comp'd/no dot open gun. I was there, it was the talk of the match.

My 76 year old eyes cannot see iron sights.  So, dot first, everything else second.

If my memory is correct his main gun went down just before match and he showed up with a single stack 38 super iron sight comp gun and Finnished in top 16 possibly top 10. Was at match but was a long time ago.

I heard a few different stories about why.. loss of dot sponsor, broken guns, just wanted to try it, etc.  But he still placed well.
