New to loading 10mm

The guy at Graf’s in St. Charles, MO talked me into an 8 pounder of AA9.

I had to dig through a few reloading manuals to find a recipe of AA9 with 180's, but I am still glad to see somebody else mention it in this thread.

Some of you physicists help me out here....

KE is one half m v squared, right?

And PE is m times g times h, right?

KE = PE where the m’s cancel each other out, right?

Me?

Personally, I would rather see power factor used, which is basically momentum, right?

The factory S&B 180gr ammo I was shooting PF’ed at about 196.

which is about what WWB .45ACP PF’s at.

The only thing that impressed me that day at the chronograph was how far my 10mm was throwing the empties.  😞

My XDM would toss brass to the next county until I upped the recoil spring from stock to 20 lb. Even at that, the 240 PF 200 gr loads still go 8+ feet.

foot lbs is a myth when it comes to terminal balistics of bullets.

As mentioned PF is a much more reliable way to compare bullets that you want to actually do something when it gets to its target.
The whole reason use power factor in USPSA was it was measured hitting a swinging pendulum.

Dont believe me, ask a bear guide, shotgun slug  or traditional muzzleloader deer hunter ,, or a bowling pin shooter.

I really enjoy my xdm osp 9mm, Was my first plastic fantastic, and after I did a basic trigger job on it I really liked it. Thought about the 10mm when it came out for backpacking and horse camping,,,  But when I saw they did all their testing , developing and "torture" tests with Federal ammo,, I thought it was a joke.
FYI federal 10mm ammo is loaded at 40 velocity. So I thought whats the point. Gonna go with a 45 if I find a deal as I already load and have plenty of 45 components

I just did a powder inventory, so far I’ve got: titegroup, Longshot, HS6, Power Pistol,  PB, WAC & bullseye.

Full disclosure I got this 1050 used with a TON of powder, primers, etc...my only experience is loading 40s&w for major PF for a 2011, and 9mm for a Glock 19.

If there’s a powder y’all recommend I’m all ears. Also, magnum LPP? Any difference other than hardness?

I don't do any competition shooting, but in my g20/40 and xdm precision hs6, longshot and power pistol run fine.   I have also used be86.

I ended up using Longshot & Blue Dot. Below is my load data for those two powders. I'm using 180gr blue bullets, pushing them out of a para elite hunter long slide (6"). The loads I chose to run with were the 7.5gr longshot, VERY soft shooting, accurate, good velocity & low SD. For the Blue Dot I chose 8.6gr. Not as soft as longshot but was definitely manageable, accurate and low SD.

With the max charge of 10.7gr bluedot I had a couple instances where it locked the slide back. It was super snappy and was flattening the primers.

LONG SHOT DATA:

7.5gr: 1227f/s    ES: 30   SD: 9

7.8gr: 1268f/s    ES: 29   SD: 10

8.1gr: 1287f/s    ES: 17    SD: 8

8.4gr: 1315f/s   ES: 47    SD: 12

BLUE DOT DATA

7.5gr: 1075f/s   ES: 46  SD: 16

8.1gr: 1143f/s   ES: 76  SD: 21

8.6gr: 1195f/s   ES: 46  SD: 11

9.1gr: 1236f/s    ES: 61  SD: 20

9.6gr: 1295f/s   ES: 74  SD: 22

10.2gr: 1339f/s  ES: 51  SD: 15

10.7gr: 1383f/s  ES: 47 SD: 15

I guess most on here do comp shooting?   Just wondering as for bullet weight choice when meeting power factors?   I might need too start another thread, so not too pi$$ off mods/admins?   Are these loads in this thread for fmj/cast or do some use hp?

I use a lot of longshot, hs6 and power pistol for 10mm.   Al have been good choices in g20, g40 and xdm (5.25").   Blue dot and #9 has worked well also.   Side note:   I don't shoot in comps.   The bullet load ranges from 135 to 165 and very few 180s.

A powder that doesn't get much mention for 10mm is BE-86.  The Alliant book loads are very close to what I get from my G40. 1260fps from a 180gr Precision Delta with 8.5gr of BE-86 is nothing to sneeze at.

I haven't shot any of my Longshot loads, yet, but I have high hopes for that powder, as well as Shooters World Heavy Pistol.

I just tried your 7.5g Longshot load and it does shoot very well. I think the accuracy problem I was having with Longshot was that I was trying to push it too hard.

I’m revisiting this as I’ve found some interesting data.  Earlier I had stated that using Longshot didn’t give me the results I wanted. You posted your loads and the 7.5g load was nice. Well I was looking at the online guide and my manual and guess what, I think someone goofed. In my Hodgdon manual it shows the following;

AAAC4D1E-6F82-402E-88AA-B182A2A8B246.thumb.jpeg.3ce98059f59fe8363d10ad2bfc1c3398.jpeg

On-line now shows a different load with all the same components.

We’re told to follow the published data but as you can see they don’t always get it right either. No wonder my Starting load seemed a bit warm! Also take note of the pressures. I also highly doubt that they have changed the formulation that much in 3-4 years without mentioning something. I have a few others to check but so far this is the only one I’ve found. Anyway just something to watch.
