Louisiana Gator Classic Update - September 3,4

Recommended Posts

This is an update on the Louisiana Gator Classic match to be held on September 2,3,4/2005 in Thibodeaux, Louisiana.

The match will be held at:

Southern Shooting Center

979 Hwy 3185 Lot 199

Thibodaux, LA 70301

(985) 448-1147

The range is a premier facility for an USPSA match. It is a fairly new range that is easy to get to and the owner has continuously been upgrading it. We will be able to run 12 stages simultaneously as it has 12 pistol bays side by side. It also boasts a 300 yard rifle range and a 5 man sporting clay field.

This is an USPSA sanctioned, points series match. There are 12 challenging stages, a minimum of 314 rounds.

Applications for the match are at: http://www.lagator.org/lgc.htm

Stages are at: http://www.southernshootingcenter.com/la-gator.htm

Map to the range: http://www.southernshootingcenter.com/ssc-maps.htm

The match hotel, Howard Johnson in Thibodaux 985 447 9071, is just minutes away from the range.

The Match will start at 8am Friday, Saturday and Sunday. RO's will shoot on Friday.

Thanks to our sponsors, the prize tables will be awesome. The prize tables will include 12 guns – 3 Smith & Wesson VE40, 3 Smith & Wesson VE9,

6 Smith & Wesson 22A.

We are also having a raffle that includes 3 guns as prizes – a Smith & Wesson Doug Koening 45 Auto, a DPMS Sweet 16 .223 AR15 and a Smith & Wesson VE9. The 4th prize is a set of 5 steel challenge plates and rods. There will be a maximum of 750 ticket sold, so your chances are way better here than at the casino’s.

There will be a demo area hosted by Smith & Wesson where you can shoot any of their products.

We will have on site catering available that will include a hot breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. You will be able to get Jambalaya for lunch as well as the standard hot dogs and hamburgers

There will be a speed shoot demo by Jerry Miculek, most probably during the 1 hour wait immediately following the match.

The Match will be filmed by Sportsman’s Paradise. This show is seen on Cox cable throughout Louisiana and parts of Florida, Arkansas and Texas. Come out and be famous.

If you are interested in picking up bullets, powder or primers at the match, please call Tom Duchman / Action Shooting Supply at 504 279 9097 or email him at l1670@aol.com

Hey whats is the weather like? I looked on the reports and it says scattered showers every day for the last two weeks> I looked at your stages and they will be very interesting for us revolver shooters to say the least. Do you know how many revolver shooters are signed up?

Weather is hot and very humid, this time of year we normally have some sort of quick afternoon showers that last 20-30 minutes. I would recommend getting some type of bandana or hat with water absorbent gel in them to help stay cool. I use the bodycooler bandana with the piece going down the back and the Cooldanna baseball hat from Roshgo and it really helps out. Look at bodycooler.com or roshgo.com ( look under Cooldanna baseball hat). You may look a little funny but you it will keep you cool ( the hat really works well.) I know of at least 4 revolver shooters with Mr. Miculek being there.

Hope the rangemasters have "Katrina proofed" everything...

Today's report says she may push through New Orleans on Mon/Tue.

Wishful thinking...maybe we'll all be lucky & she'll just fizzle in the Gulf.

If Katrina hits New Orleans, a pistol match will be the last of anyone's worries. Hell, they may have to pitch tents or park RV's there.

Hurricane or No Hurricane!

The Match IS ON!!!

As far as New Orleans goes, The range is West of New Orleans and the Strike Forecast is putting it east of New Orleans. Even if N.O. Takes a Direct Hit (Sorry N.O. People Not Wishing anything here) We'll get mostly rain and some wind.

We live with hurricanes, We are ready for it.

Don't change any of your plans!

THE MATCH IS ON!!!

I'm adopting a wait and see attitude. Really don't feel like fighting traffic resulting from evacuated residents returning home. Best wishes to all the folks in the wake of Katrina. Stay safe.

Just tried to call to confirm that my hotel was not underwater, has electricity and that my reservation will be honored. Can't get through on the phone. Called the hotel's national call center who also had no information.

I still want to go and am making preparations to do so but will not drive 5+ hours with my child without confirming lodging at the least. I'd also like to know that we'll not be shooting in ankle, knee or waist deep water (although that would be a different sort of match :P adds a whole new meaning to GATOR Classic).

Gary and Barbara T. spent the night here Sunday & Monday night, headed back home to Thibodaux yesterday. Haven't heard how their home or the range has faired yet.

How about some news.

A group of us from Houston are also waiting for the news on the range.

The power outages are going to be a big problem at this time. I know Houston sent about 70 eletricity company trucks to help with the restoring of electricity.

If anyone has contact with the MD by cell phone and can post would help us out of town shooters.

Thanks

Tony.

there is complete devistation from laplace and east to mobile. the area where tom duchemann and joe camprie have there shops are under about 12 ft of water!! i haven't heard from anyone yet but gary was in schreveport and is headed home. there is little cell phone usage because of the down towers. i think the range is in good shape but there is a lot of damage around it. in my opinion there will be no match but wait and see what gary will say. please keep everyone down here in your prayers. there may be no power in new orleans for about a month or longer.

James,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and all the crew from La. I have tried calling all the folks I know down there but, as you say, the lines are all overloaded so we will keep monitoring the forums for news.

It is a 9.5+ hour drive from Atlanta and I understand most of the road into the New Orleans area are closed so I am not sure if we will be able to get there anyway.

Regards,

Carlos

I have not made contact with anyone . Tried to call Gary and could not get thru. You can not get anywhere close to New Orleans I still don't have electricity at the house and I am staying with family in Baton Rouge. IfIi find out anything I will try and post tomorrow.

IF the match is still on, I hope we can set up some sort of collections/donations to assist those in need, on behalf of the match participants. Obviously, if we can make the match, we can help others. That would be awesome.

However, I'm having a hard time morally justifying staying at a hotel in Louisiana when thousands of homeless are being evacuated to Houston.

Match or not, I may just remain committed to the relief efforts currently in progress.

Please continue updating with any information available.

Its hard to imagine with the tremondous devastation just down the road, the evacuation of New Orleans, the loss of power and infrastructure so close to the area, that any kind of match would still be held next weekend. Heck, half if not most of the match vendors/sponsors' businesses are underwater right now, if not worse.

And as Sniper suggested, its hard to justify taking up any hotel space that close to New Orleans with all the displaced residents.....

This is going to get worse before it gets better, I wouldn't want to be within a half day's drive to New Orleans unless I was a resident or part of the relief effort.

Heck of a match, I've shot it in the past..... but a reschedule is surely in order?

Just got off the phone with Kay's daughter. Jerry is down south with Gary & Barbara. He called this morning and said they're going to try to put on the match. Standby for further updates.

I personally don't see how this match can go as scheduled. There is no place to stay, no communications, thousands of displaced people, crime, lack of supplies (gas, water, food) and utilities (electricity, phones). I would like to see the match rescheduled.

Shooters helping Shooters

If you are a shooter that needs a place to stay because of the storm

I know of several shooters in the Houston and Austin area that are willing to open their homes to you.

Posting on internet, seems kind of dumb. 'cause if you have internet access you probably don't need a place to stay but...

It's "the tool closest to my hand".

As to the match...

My guess is the folks that run the match are still trying to figure out if they and their families are alive, have homes, and/or have jobs to go to when the water goes down.

See you at the range

based on what is in the news, and the fact that no communications or updates on the match, i'm sure they have other things going on right now that are much more important than a match. i've decided to not take the chance on being a burden on the people or economy of southern louisiana, i to hope the match will be

rescheduled.

i was looking forward to seeing old friends and shooting a great match, but it just wouldn't be the same. like reneet, said earlier if gas and lodging are at a premium, why should i use it when others need it.

good luck and god bless......... trapr
