Thinking about a new holster

So I have been considering replacing the CR speed I am currently running and have been leaning towards the DAA Race Master (yes I would end up getting more blocks for other guns). I have used the DAA, I like it, but I am wondering if I am overlooking something that some of the others offer (specificall the Guga Ribas or a Ghost). Is there any reason to conider those other holsters or just forget it and go DAA?

I run an older racemaster with multiple blocks for different guns. Its a real cool set up...except when I forget to switch blocks haahaha. Besides it being compatible with other guns I like how solid it keeps the gun mounted. It's a straight pull up to clear the lock. I've got blocks for the n frame, 2011 and glocks. Works good.

I also have an old ultimate ghost for 2011 and its cool but the gun slops around in the holster a bit. The feeling of it jiggling around in there is annoying. But a good lock, easy to clear on the draw and works perfectly fine also. I just didnt want to have to buy a few of them for the different guns. But I've never owned one for revo.

I have friends that run the Guba rivas for autos and its pretty awesome. The only holster I know of where you don't have to draw straight up (limcat may be like this as well). Some people view this as unsafe and some view it as fast. But I have no idea about the revolver side of it.

All holsters when locked shouldn't release a gun. None of my race holsters have failed. Another one to check out is the Safariland 014 but I'm not sure there's a revo option.

So really I guess I can only comment on the racemaster for revo and I say its gtg. One thing to think about is that it looses the modularity because the rest of the belt has to change for revo. For limited everything stays the same for me, just change the block for the gun. So it depends how much swapping around you want to do too. But I like the retention and feel of the racemaster.

I thought that holster was just for Semi-autos, all the info states what pistols it fits, nothing about fitting a revolver. Does it work just fine without fitting/machining anything (both L and N frames)?

Protocol Design makes a revolver adapter for the Hogue auto holster.

The Hogue Power Speed holster with my Revo Adapter fits all S&W K,L and N frame revos with a 4" to 8-3/8" long barrel. No other parts to buy or keep track of. You can change from any gun to any other in a few seconds with no tools. Fits all factory and custom guns with scopes, Bianchi wings, etc.

I found a new holster that I really like.  The Ernie  Hill Speed Holster (Guba Riba).  It's very secure and can be adjusted to any revolver.  It's fast to draw from.

A few months ago I had an accident on the range, I fell backwards on my wheelchair and landed on my head.  All I could think of is "Did my gun fall out?"  It was still safely in the holster.  It fits any size barrel and any frame.  I can use it for my 4 inch Model 10 or my 6 1/2 inch 929.  It goes even further.

Try to take a look at one if you can.

The Hogue Power Speed is awesome.

So, what I thought was going to be a quick "just buy the DAA already" ended up becoming "solid choices, but also consider ____", I may need to ask more questions.

Does anybody have any bad experiences from the DAA Racemaster? Or any reason to not get it?

Part of why I wanted to get away from the CR speed is because of the muzzle plug thing. I want something I can use for L and N frame guns without having to swap a lot of parts around (I plan to use it for the L-6 686, a 617, 5" 627, and eventually 929). I want the gun to fit securely in the holster (most of the guys say the DAA is pretty secure).

For those who have the Guga Ribas and the Hogue (only one mention of the ghost and sloppy isn't what I want), is it fairly effortless to adjust for use with those different guns?

I own , and use - The DAA racemaster, Custom Hogue powerspeed, Guga Ribas, and Blade tech.

The Racemaster is my most used holster, it'll fit all my guns - at any time - with no adjustment needed. When locked, the gun wont come out no matter how hard you grab. The only " negatives " are that most guns have a bit of wiggle forward and backwards in the block, this effects nothing IMO. I use the DAA for USPSA and ICORE.

The blade-tech, really shouldnt need any explanation, they are simple, tough, pretty self explanatory. I use the blade tech on my ICORE Classic belt rig.

The Hogue powerspeed ( custom made by hogue ) I used for steel challenge for many years, It's no doubt the fastest holster on the market IMO. There are only a few magnets the hold the gun in place when unlocked, It'll release from it's holster with any direction of grab - Up, forward, left , right - Whatever, you grab it and go and off it is. The only thing i'd like to change would be added range of motion for positioning of the gun. You can adjust forward and backward angle, but it runs pretty close to the body.

The Guga-Ribas is new to me, Though i've been using it for Steel challenge for the past few months. IMO setup is a little bit of a chore, but it offers infinite adjustability . Tension off the grab can be set, angel, cant, pitch, etc. Im enjoying it right now for steel challenge because I can adjust the gun in a more comfortable position.

But, if you're going to just have one holster to cover all bases. Go with the DAA Racemaster.

I handled one of the Hogues at their IRC booth and it seemed like a great holster.  If I didn't already have the DAA I would strongly consider one.

It's been about a year since I started using a DAA and I have zero complaints so far.  It fits every Ruger and Smith I own pretty well, only one gun feels kind of sloppy in the block but that doesn't affect function at all.  I think the best feature is the range of adjustment so you can get the exact match for your draw stroke.

Thanks a lot for your input Alec. I currently own a Bladetech (and the CR speed). This helps quite a bit. I think I'll go ahead and get the DAA and get it set up and start using it. When we do our Hogue order for the store next year I'll add one of their holsters to the order just to mess around with it and see if I like it.

Alex, thanks for your input as well. I was actually going to text you and ask about your experience with it.

P.S. we need to talk sometime about Central Region stuff when you get some free time.

Don't forget AA makes a Racer holster that has same adjustments and locking mechanism as Racemaster.

Racemaster is a great holster especially if you shoot other platforms and you can switch blocks and use it for USPSA open and limited/limited 10.

Racer is made of some kind of nylon type of material instead of aluminum.

Racer cost $70 less than Racemaster.

I have been using Racer for 3 years with no problems.

I'm glad you mentioned this because I probably would buy the Racer model if I did it again. I will eventually use mine with a CZ insert but most people set-up their rig for one type of gun and leave it that way.  Also, the draw is different for me with my autos so the entire holster would need readjusted between block changes.  Just something to consider.

I went thru the same process. I replaced my CR Speed with two DAA Racer holsters. I set up two belts, one for N-frame with moon clips and another for K frame and speed loaders. That way I could grab and go with re-doing belts. The DAA Racer works a lot slicker than the CR Speed.

Will the racer work for both L and N frames, or do you need 2 different holsters for that? Breaking the cost down: if I buy the Race master and two inserts, it can run the same belt and moonclip holder (I'm switching to the North Mountain). It would cost less than two belts, two holders and two racer holsters (if I can't use it for both frame sizes).

I have used my N frame Racer for L and K frame without any issues. The K frame wobbles a little and is a little loose but when locked it still won't come out.

One holster should work for the 3 frame sizes IMO.

Thanks for the response. If the racer works fine with L & N frames, that does make me consider it as spending less money is never a bad thing.

I appreciate everybody's input and willingness to share their experiences with these holster systems.

I just started using the DAA for SC and Action Pistol for a 45 acp single stack and once adjusted I love it.  I was using a Ghost Stinger and there is no comparison to the draw.  Because of the rounded trigger guard I added the muzzle support.  I know DAA offers a revolver adaptor for the muzzle support.  Just something you should look at.
