MissionaryMike
Having purchased a new S2 and a few upgrades, I decided a steel guide rod wouldn't be one of them. What about you guys? If you're running a steel guide rod, why? Edited October 7, 2016 by MissionaryMike
goldfish
Is that a Tanfo or a CZ?

haiedras
That's standard on a tanfo. I changed that out for the henning guide rod pretty much right away.
ElMateo487
You might be confused because you see people listing their upgrades guns and some mention the Henning steel guide rod. The Henning has a cone shaped head to it, that better fits into the frame stop. But all S2s come with steel guide rods.

Well, that was dumb of me. I visited the Tanfo site last night and saw the plastic guide rod and assumed it was the stock offering.
MissionaryMike
Ok, well, I've gone ahead and changed the poll up. Is the upgrade to a Henning or Xtreme essential? I mean, am I handicapping myself w/o one? Is there a perceivable difference in performance?
johnbu
The factory GR will cause the frame to form a lip where it gets pounded. the Henning part fixes that. ALL my guns have a cone fit GR and I consider it mandatory. There is no performance gain with any. The EG is reputed to be a ripoff of the Henning design. Both fix the problem if the flat GR. your choice to get the original or the...copy. Edited October 7, 2016 by johnbu

Seems like it would be well worth the $39 to pick up a henning. Edited October 7, 2016 by MissionaryMike

Yeah, it is especially prevalent in the larger calibers, but I didn't want to risk it even for a 9mm. I've heard it can be very difficult to get the slide off after it deforms too much. johnbu
Yes, over time the frame where the slide / GR hammers will form a lip. That lip causes issues. not on "pedestrian" guns. But on high use competition guns it forms pretty quick. Mine started to form that lip after a few thousand rounds. But since the Henning GR no problem. ryridesmotox
I doubt your have a problem unless you were shooting 10mm or 38super open guns. And at that point... The guide rod would Probably be the least of your concern. Apparently people break slide stops more. I shoot 13pf 9mm loads. I might get around to a guide rod from Henning. I really like the design of it, so I voted for the Henning guide rod.
johnbu
Wow ! I thought my loads were soft.... bet you can't even feel "13pf" Lol, yeah I know, it's a typo, still struck me as funny! 16 hours ago, ryridesmotox said: I doubt your have a problem unless you were shooting 10mm or 38super open guns. mgerencs
I have a Limited Pro and Stock 3 and pretty much changed to the Henning rod on both immediately. I did it more for frame protection than anything else.
MemphisMechanic
I've seen at least two people mention not making the change in Minor guns without seeing much need for it, but I've got no idea how I could locate that topic. $39 isn't a lot of money for this kind of insurance. emjei
Off Topic but........WIll the plastic buffer + OEM guide rod be a cheaper solution ???
johnbu
No, I don't think so. The cone end is what's spreading the load out and I don't the buff will give the same protection.
